Windows 11 restarting without warning is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The trigger may be a blue-screen bug check, a driver or application failure, a hardware fault, an unrecoverable hang, overheating, or an interruption in power. A visible stop code, Event Viewer records, Reliability Monitor, and crash dumps usually provide more useful evidence than the restart itself.
First record exactly what happens, then correlate the restart with Windows logs and recent changes. Do not replace RAM, a power supply, or another component solely because you see Kernel-Power Event ID 41: that event confirms an unclean shutdown but does not identify why it happened.

What a random restart tells you
Microsoft describes an unexpected restart as Windows recovering from a serious problem. The message may briefly say that the device ran into a problem and needs to restart. Microsoft also notes that the cause can be a hardware device, its driver, or software.
There are three useful symptom patterns:
- Visible blue screen or stop code: Windows recorded a bug check. The code, parameters, and any named driver are valuable clues.
- Instant black screen and reboot: this is more consistent with a power interruption, hardware protection event, firmware problem, or a hang that Windows could not report. It can still be a software failure.
- Planned shutdown or restart: an administrator, update, installer, or another process requested it. Event ID 1074 can help distinguish this from a crash.
Workload and timing narrow the search. Restarts during games or other graphics-heavy work make GPU drivers, temperatures, firmware, and power delivery worth checking. Restarts while idle, waking from sleep, or entering sleep point more toward power-management settings, firmware, or a device that mishandles low-power states. A pattern that begins immediately after a BIOS, firmware, driver, or Windows change deserves a rollback or vendor-specific review.

Capture evidence before changing anything
Write down the symptom
At the next restart, note the exact time, whether you saw a blue screen, whether the display went black instantly, and what the PC was doing. Photograph a stop code if it disappears too quickly. Record the complete code, any file name such as a driver module, and whether the restart happened during gaming, video playback, sleep, startup, or idle time.
Prevent Windows from hiding a stop code
- Press
Windows + R, typesysdm.cpl, and press Enter. - Open the Advanced tab, then under Startup and Recovery select Settings.
- Clear Automatically restart and confirm with OK. Windows can now remain on the stop screen long enough for you to record it.
This setting does not fix the fault; it only preserves the evidence. Re-enable automatic restart after troubleshooting if you prefer unattended recovery.
Read Event Viewer correctly
- Right-click Start and open Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs and select System.
- Use Filter Current Log to focus on Critical, Error, and Warning events around the restart time.
- Open events immediately before and after the restart. Record the provider, event ID, General-tab text, and Details-tab values.
What Event ID 41 means
Microsoft’s Event ID 41 documentation defines it as a system that rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. It is a starting point, not a root-cause label. A bug check, a hard hang, or lost power can all produce it.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the event’s bug-check fields. Nonzero bug-check data supports a crash investigation; zero values do not prove that the power supply is defective because a hard hang or abrupt power loss can leave Windows with no code to record. Compare Event 41 with nearby WHEA hardware-error events, display or storage-driver errors, and Event ID 1074. A 1074 entry naming a process and reason indicates an orderly restart request rather than an unexplained crash.

Use Reliability Monitor as a timeline
- Press
Windows + R, typeperfmon /rel, and press Enter. - In the calendar, select the day marked with a red failure icon.
- Expand Critical events and Windows failures to see application crashes, hardware errors, failed updates, and the times they occurred.
Reliability Monitor is useful for spotting a first failure after a driver or application change and for seeing whether several restarts share the same faulting component.
Apply safe software checks
Install pending Windows updates
Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when requested. If the restarts began immediately after an update, note the update’s date and build before considering removal; do not assume that every restart following an update was caused by it.
Update or roll back the affected driver
Use the PC, motherboard, or device manufacturer’s support page for a driver that matches the exact model and Windows 11 edition. In Device Manager, expand the relevant category, right-click the device, choose Properties → Driver, and record the provider, date, and version. If the first restart followed a driver change, use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise uninstall the recently changed utility or driver, restart, and install the known-compatible package from the manufacturer.

Pay particular attention to graphics, chipset, storage, network, audio, and power-management drivers. Avoid installing several unrelated driver packages at once; changing one variable makes the next restart easier to interpret.

Remove recently added utilities
Temporarily uninstall software that hooks into games or the display, including overlays, hardware-tuning tools, fan controllers, third-party security modules, and system “optimizer” utilities. If the restart pattern stops, add programs back one at a time. Keep your normal security protection enabled unless its vendor provides a documented diagnostic procedure.
Isolate third-party software with Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the PC remains stable there, a non-Microsoft driver, startup service, security component, overlay, or recently installed application becomes more likely.
- Open Settings → System → Recovery.
- Next to Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking only when network access is necessary.
Use Safe Mode to uninstall a suspect program, roll back a driver, or copy crash dumps. If the PC still restarts in Safe Mode, third-party startup software is less likely; continue with memory, power, thermal, firmware, and hardware checks.

Check memory and system integrity
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
- Press
Windows + R, typemdsched.exe, and press Enter. - Choose Restart now and check for problems after saving your work.
- After Windows starts, open Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs → System. Filter or search for the MemoryDiagnostics-Results source.
Repeated memory errors make RAM, a memory slot, or memory-compatibility settings plausible. Power off before reseating modules, follow the motherboard or system vendor’s slot guidance, and use its compatibility list before buying replacement memory. A single clean pass does not prove that memory is perfect under every workload, but an error is strong evidence that deserves hardware testing.
Repair Windows component files
Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish. DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses; SFC then checks protected system files. Restart and check whether the original pattern returns. These commands cannot repair a defective power supply, failing RAM, or an incompatible device driver.

When the screen goes black instantly
- Check that the wall outlet, power strip, laptop adapter, and internal power cables are firmly connected.
- For a desktop, verify that the power supply’s capacity and connectors match the graphics card and processor requirements.
- For a laptop, compare behavior on battery and on the manufacturer’s adapter, and inspect the adapter for damage.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures with the system or motherboard vendor’s utility. Look for a repeatable temperature rise immediately before the reset, not just a high value observed afterward.
- Remove overclocks, undervolts, custom memory profiles, and fan-curve experiments temporarily. Return firmware settings to defaults for a controlled test.
Event ID 41 with no bug-check data can accompany power loss or a hard hang. It is not proof that the PSU, UPS, or wall power is at fault. Replace hardware only after the symptom, measurements, compatibility information, or controlled substitution points to it.

Test idle and sleep transitions
If restarts happen while the PC is idle or waking, temporarily disable sleep, hibernation, and aggressive device power-saving options as a diagnostic experiment. In Settings → System → Power & battery, choose a longer sleep timeout or Never while testing. In Device Manager, inspect the device’s Power Management tab and temporarily clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power for a suspect network or USB device. Restore normal power-saving settings after identifying the trigger.
Update firmware carefully
Check the computer or motherboard vendor’s support page for BIOS, UEFI, storage, graphics-card, and other device-firmware updates that explicitly match the model. Read the vendor’s recovery instructions, connect reliable power, and do not interrupt a firmware update. Record the current version first so you can correlate a restart pattern with the change and use the vendor’s rollback procedure if supported.
Preserve dumps and escalate with a complete record
When Windows can write them, small memory dumps are stored in C:WindowsMinidump; a complete dump may be C:WindowsMEMORY.DMP. Copy these files before cleanup software or disk repairs remove them. In System Properties → Advanced → Startup and Recovery, confirm that a debugging-information option other than None is selected and that the paging file is available on the Windows volume.

- the exact stop code and parameters, if shown;
- the restart times and workload pattern;

- Reliability Monitor’s critical-event timeline;
- minidumps or MEMORY.DMP when available;
- recent Windows, BIOS, firmware, driver, hardware, and software changes;
- memory-test results and temperature or power observations.
This evidence is more actionable than saying only that Windows “randomly restarts.”
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating Event 41 as the diagnosis: it records an unclean shutdown, not its cause.
- Buying RAM or a PSU immediately: the symptom alone cannot identify a compatible module, required capacity, or failing power component.
- Changing many things at once: simultaneous driver, BIOS, registry, and hardware changes destroy the timeline needed to isolate a cause.
- Ignoring stop-code details: the named module and bug-check parameters are often stronger clues than a generic critical event.
- Leaving diagnostic settings altered: restore startup, service, and power settings after testing, and document anything intentionally left changed.
