If Windows says it is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair the Windows component first, then repair the application named in the error.
The file is associated with the Windows Runtime Windows.ApplicationModel namespace, which provides application functionality, package information, and suspend/resume handling. Microsoft documents this API family as part of Windows Runtime, not as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET component.

What windows.applicationmodel.dll is and where it belongs
On 64-bit Windows, the expected locations are:
| Copy | Expected location | Used by |
|---|---|---|
| Native 64-bit copy | %windir%System32Windows.ApplicationModel.dll |
64-bit Windows programs |
| 32-bit copy | %windir%SysWOW64Windows.ApplicationModel.dll |
32-bit programs through WOW64 |
The names are confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
The embedded description is commonly reported as Windows ApplicationModel API Server. File versions vary by Windows release, build, servicing level, and architecture, so a different version or size is not automatically evidence of malware. Third-party version tables are not an authoritative Windows catalogue.

A legitimate copy should normally be in a Windows system directory and should be associated with Microsoft. A copy in a game folder, temporary directory, Downloads folder, or an unfamiliar application directory deserves additional checking.
Messages you may see
Common forms of this problem include:
- “The program can’t start because Windows.ApplicationModel.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because Windows.ApplicationModel.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting Windows.ApplicationModel.dll.”
- “Error loading Windows.ApplicationModel.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Windows.ApplicationModel.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- A Bad Image dialog showing a path under
C:WindowsSystem32and an error status.
The named DLL is not always the true root cause. Windows may report a dependency that the program tried to load, while the underlying problem is corrupted Windows servicing data, an incomplete update, a damaged app package, or another dependency.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave system files mismatched. Start with Windows Update before replacing anything manually.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Open the affected program again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
If Windows Update reports an error, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters on Windows 11, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update.
If the error began immediately after a Windows update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and remove the most recent suitable update. If Windows cannot start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most important fix when the error names a copy under System32 or SysWOW64, affects more than one application, or began after cleanup software, a failed update, an interrupted upgrade, or deletion of a system file.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as a source for replacing corrupted protected files. The supported procedure is described in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance.
How to interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC found no protected-file corruption. Continue with application repair and path checking.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means run DISM again, check Windows Update, and repeat SFC after restarting.
- If DISM cannot find source files, use a valid matching Windows repair source with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a suitable repair source. Do not use an arbitrary folder or a mismatched Windows release.

For a targeted verification of the native copy, run:
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSystem32Windows.ApplicationModel.dll
To check the 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows, use:
sfc /verifyfile=C:WindowsSysWOW64Windows.ApplicationModel.dll
Repeated SFC and DISM runs without recording the result can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and DISM followed by SFC remains the built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one Microsoft Store app, launcher, game, or Windows shell component fails, the application package may be damaged even though the dialog names a Windows DLL.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not work, return to the same screen and select Reset. Resetting can remove the app’s local data and settings.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the program.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Change if the installer provides that option.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall it.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official website or reinstall it from Microsoft Store.
- Restart Windows before testing again.
If a game launcher has a Verify, Scan, or Repair files command, use it when the launcher reports a file inside the game’s own installation directory. That process cannot restore the Windows copy in System32.
If reinstalling the application fixes the error, the application package or its local dependencies were probably damaged. If the same error appears in several unrelated programs, return to DISM, SFC, and Windows recovery rather than repeatedly reinstalling applications.
Fix 4: Check the path and architecture
Read the complete path shown in the error dialog.
A path such as:
C:WindowsSystem32Windows.ApplicationModel.dll
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64Windows.ApplicationModel.dll
points to the Windows component.
A path inside a program directory may indicate that the program bundled or copied its own file. Do not overwrite that copy with one downloaded from elsewhere. Repair the program from its official installer, then use DISM and SFC if Windows itself also reports errors.

Architecture matters:
- A 64-bit application normally uses the native 64-bit Windows copy.
- A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally uses the 32-bit copy through
SysWOW64. - Copying a 32-bit file over a 64-bit file, or the reverse, can create Bad Image and load errors.
Restore the correct Windows copy through servicing tools instead of selecting a version from a DLL index.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Security software can quarantine a damaged or falsely identified system file. Malware can also modify, replace, or delete system components.

- Open your antivirus application.
- Review Quarantine, Protection history, or Threat history.
- Restore a file only if it is identified as a Microsoft file and is located in the expected Windows directory.
- Update the security definitions.
- Run a full scan.
- If Windows is unstable or malware is suspected, run an offline scan.
- Restart and repeat the DISM and SFC checks.
Do not restore a copy from an unknown program folder merely because its filename matches.
Fix 6: Use Windows 11 repair reinstall or System Restore
If DISM and SFC do not resolve the problem, and the issue affects Windows components rather than one application, use a less destructive recovery option.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
If the error began after a software installation, update, cleanup utility, or driver change:
- Open Start.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the restore.
If Windows will not boot, use Windows Recovery Environment for System Restore, Uninstall Updates, or repair from matching Windows installation media. Back up important files before using reset or clean-install options.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while driver installation requires the full version; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing a corrupted Windows component.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Manual downloads are risky because the file may contain malware, be unsigned, have the wrong architecture, belong to another Windows build, or fail to repair the dependency that actually caused the error. A downloaded file can also load before the correct Windows copy if placed beside an application.

Do not run regsvr32 as a default repair
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide a COM self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal DLL repair command. Running it against this Windows API DLL may produce a “DllRegisterServer was not found” error and will not restore Windows servicing files.
Do not copy the file from another PC
Another computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, servicing level, or language configuration. Use Microsoft’s repair mechanisms to restore the matching component.
FAQ
Is windows.applicationmodel.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A copy outside the expected Windows directory, a missing Microsoft signature, or an unexpected application-local copy requires investigation, but the filename alone does not prove malware.
Is it part of Windows App SDK?
It belongs to Windows Runtime functionality exposed through the Windows.ApplicationModel API family. Its presence does not mean that installing Windows App SDK, Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will repair it.
Should I reinstall the program named in the error?
Yes, if only one program fails and Windows itself appears healthy. Repair the program first when possible, then reinstall it from its official source. If several programs fail, repair Windows before reinstalling everything.
Why does the message say the DLL is missing when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to use the file because of corruption, an architecture mismatch, a damaged dependency, a failed update, or an application package problem. A visible file is not proof that it is usable.
What information should I provide if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, the full path shown, Windows 10 or Windows 11 and its build, whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, the application name, and any error code. Also record the final DISM and SFC messages. This distinguishes a Windows servicing problem from an application-specific failure.
