windows.devices.geolocation.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component used by the Windows Runtime location API. If it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows first, then repair or reinstall the application that reports the error instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
Windows.Devices.Geolocation.dll supports the Windows.Devices.Geolocation namespace. Applications use this Windows Runtime API to obtain or track a device’s location through components such as the Geolocator class. Microsoft documents it as part of the Windows platform rather than as a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or independent game runtime.
Historical Windows file records identify it as the “Geolocation Runtime DLL” from Microsoft Corporation. Those records are useful for confirming the file’s identity, but their old version and size information should not be used to judge a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
The exact location and architecture of Windows components can vary by Windows edition, build, and application packaging. Do not assume that a file copied into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or an application folder is the correct repair.

Causes and symptoms

Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because Windows.Devices.Geolocation.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because Windows.Devices.Geolocation.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading Windows.Devices.Geolocation.dll.”
- “Windows.Devices.Geolocation.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording varies by Windows version and application. A loader message naming this file can also be caused by another missing dependency or an incompatible application binary.
Fix 1: Repair the application that shows the error
Start here when the error affects only one program or game. A Windows Runtime file may be present and healthy while the application’s package, manifest, or dependent files are damaged.
Microsoft Store or packaged application
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Advanced options.
- Select Terminate, then Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair should preserve the application’s data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove the application’s local data, so use it only after checking whether the program stores important settings or saved files.
If neither option works, uninstall the application and reinstall it from Microsoft Store or the publisher’s official installer. Restart Windows before reinstalling when the original failure followed an interrupted update.

Check the program’s own maintenance option first:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Follow the installer’s prompts and restart Windows.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking command. If that is unavailable, uninstall the game and reinstall it from its official publisher. Do not copy windows.devices.geolocation.dll into the game directory. Reinstalling the owning program is the definitive fix for files that belong only to a damaged application installation.
Test the application after repair. If other programs also begin reporting the same DLL, stop repeating the application reinstall and continue with Windows component repair.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
Use this sequence when multiple applications fail, Windows reports that the file is missing from the system, or the issue began after a crash, disk problem, cleanup utility, or failed update.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. It may pause at a percentage for a while.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store. Do not reverse the order unless Microsoft support specifically directs you to do so.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the Windows files it checked are not showing corruption. Concentrate on the affected application, its dependencies, or an antivirus quarantine.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and repaired them, restart Windows and test again. If the problem persists, run the DISM and SFC sequence once more and review:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation as a repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
The repair source must closely match the installed Windows version and edition. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary Windows folder.
Manually checking DISM output, CBS logs, and component versions can take time, especially on machines with several damaged files. Fix 3: Install pending Windows updates
An incomplete or interrupted update can leave Windows components out of sync.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
- Run DISM followed by SFC if the DLL error remains.
If the issue started immediately after a Windows update, open Settings > System > Recovery and review the available recovery options. Depending on the installation, you may be able to uninstall a recent update or use System Restore. Save work and back up important files before using either option.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Microsoft Defender or another security product may quarantine a damaged, modified, or falsely detected file.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries involving the DLL or the application that reported the error.
Do not automatically restore the item. Before considering restoration, confirm that:
- The item came from the expected Windows component or the application’s original installation.
- The file has a valid Microsoft digital signature when it is a Windows component.
- The detection is associated with the known installation, not a file downloaded from a DLL website.
- A full Defender scan does not identify broader malware activity.
If the file was downloaded separately from an unofficial source, delete it rather than allowing it. Run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if malware is suspected. Rebuild the component through DISM and SFC or reinstall the affected application from its official source.
Fix 5: Check location permissions and Windows services
This step applies when an application opens but cannot access location, rather than when Windows reports a missing DLL.

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- Turn on Location services.
- Turn on Let apps access your location.
- If listed, enable access for the affected application.
- Restart the application.
On some systems, location access can also depend on related Windows services. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Review the services related to location or geolocation without changing startup settings blindly. If an organization manages the computer, policy may control these settings.
Device Manager is not a normal repair tool for Windows.Devices.Geolocation.dll. Use it only when the application separately reports a sensor, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other hardware problem:

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Prefer Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver supplied by the computer manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not uninstall unrelated devices merely because the DLL name contains “Geolocation.” Windows Features also does not provide a feature that reinstalls this DLL. Enabling random optional features is unlikely to repair it.
Driver hunting can involve comparing hardware models, Windows builds, and manufacturer packages. Do not download a 32-bit or 64-bit copy based only on the error text. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it may require compatible application dependencies. Copying a DLL between System32, SysWOW64, and an application directory can create version and servicing conflicts.
Instead:
- Check whether the application supports your Windows edition and architecture.
- Download its current installer from the official publisher.
- Install the application’s documented prerequisites.
- Use the application’s repair or verification feature.
- Test it again after restarting Windows.
Installing the Windows SDK is appropriate for developers building software against the geolocation API, not for repairing an end-user Windows installation. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is similarly relevant only when the application separately identifies one of those runtimes as missing.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A Windows Runtime platform component is not normally repaired by manually registering it.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a recommended fix:
regsvr32 Windows.Devices.Geolocation.dll
regsvr32 /u Windows.Devices.Geolocation.dll
They may produce an error without changing the underlying problem. Use Windows servicing, application repair, or an official reinstall instead.
Last resort: repair-reinstall Windows
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, the error affects several applications, and recovery options do not help, supported Windows 11 systems may offer an in-place repair through Windows Update:

- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when supported by the installation. Back up important files first. If the option is unavailable or fails, use Microsoft’s supported Windows installation media and choose the repair or in-place installation path carefully.
Should you download windows.devices.geolocation.dll?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incorrect Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file with an invalid signature. Even a genuine-looking copy may not match the component store or the application that requested it, and copying it into a system folder can make future Windows servicing less reliable.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the application’s official repair function, or the official Windows installation process. Those methods restore the owning component as a complete, compatible installation.

No. SFC can repair protected Windows files, but it cannot repair a damaged application package, a missing application dependency, or an incompatible program binary. Run DISM first, then SFC.
What if SFC says it cannot repair some files?
Restart, run DISM again, run SFC again, and inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. If corruption remains, use a matching repair source or consider an in-place Windows repair reinstall.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the full error text, affected application, Windows edition and build, whether other applications fail, recent updates or antivirus actions, and any relevant Event Viewer entry. This distinguishes Windows corruption from an application-specific loader or dependency problem.
