The username and password may genuinely be wrong, but the same message also appears when the account is presented in the wrong domain or server scope, a saved password is stale, the account is expired, disabled or locked, or an authentication policy rejects the exchange.
The reliable fix is to identify the operation first, then verify the account format, remove conflicting credentials, test the target directly and check policy or directory health when the code is not the ordinary 1326 error.

What “logon failure” means
Microsoft defines Win32 error 1326 (hexadecimal 0x52E) as “Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.” Applications that wrap the Win32 result often show 0x8007052e. The text describes the authentication result, not necessarily the underlying cause. Windows may send a valid account to the wrong server, use an old saved password, or be blocked by account restrictions or security policy, and the target can still return the same visible message.
The code itself is a status report, not evidence that a computer is infected. It can occur during a local or domain sign-in, an SMB file-share connection, printer installation, a scheduled task, backup software, directory synchronization or a domain operation. The exact operation determines which fix applies.

Start by identifying where the failure occurs
Write down the complete message, numeric code and action that triggered it. A share, printer, domain join and replication failure can all contain the words “logon failure,” but they use different authentication paths.
- Interactive sign-in: the Windows sign-in screen rejects the account.
- File share or mapped drive: File Explorer or
net usecannot authenticate to a server. - Printer: Windows cannot connect to a shared printer.
- Scheduled task, service or backup: a stored run-as account may still contain an old password.
- Password Sync or another directory tool: the configured Active Directory identity may be malformed or stale.
- Domain join: the code may be
0x569, which is a rights problem, not ordinary error 1326. - Replication: code
1396points to a target-account-name or trust issue.
Do not repeatedly submit a guessed password while diagnosing. Repeated failures can increase the bad-password count and lock an account, especially when client and server authentication policies are incompatible.
Fix error 1326 or 0x8007052e for a normal sign-in
1. Check the account format and keyboard input
Confirm that Caps Lock, Num Lock and the keyboard layout are what you expect. A domain account can require one of these forms:

A username that exists on your PC may not exist on the remote server, and a local account name is not automatically a domain account. If the password recently changed, use the new password and allow time for the account to reach the server or domain controller that is processing the request.

2. Verify the account’s state
Have an administrator check whether the account is expired, disabled or locked, and whether a policy requires a password change. For a domain identity, confirm that the account is present in the expected Active Directory domain. For a local identity, verify it on the specific target computer; identical names on two computers are still different accounts.
3. Remove stale Windows credentials
Windows can silently reuse a password saved during an earlier connection. Open Control Panel → User Accounts → Credential Manager → Windows Credentials. Remove or edit the entry for the affected server, printer or application, then retry and enter the current account explicitly. Removing a credential also removes the convenience of the saved connection, so make sure you know the current password before deleting it.

net use \servershare /user:DOMAINuser *The asterisk makes Windows prompt for the password instead of placing it in the command. Replace the server, share, domain and username with the values for your environment.
When one network share works and another fails
Each server authenticates the connection independently. A successful connection to one share proves only that one server accepted one account or cached session; it does not prove that another server recognizes the same name, password or domain.
Test the failing server directly
- In File Explorer’s address bar, enter
\serversharefor the failing target. - When prompted, choose Use a different account if it appears.
- Enter
DOMAINuser,serverlocaluseror the appropriate UPN, then the current password. - If the direct test succeeds, recreate the mapped drive so it does not retain the previous session or saved credential.
If authentication succeeds but access is denied afterward, the problem is permissions on the share or file system rather than error 1326. If the prompt never accepts a correctly scoped account, check the target server’s account state, name resolution and authentication policy.

For a network printer, Microsoft’s documented workaround is to authenticate to the print server before installing the printer.

- Open File Explorer and enter
\servernameprintername, replacing both names with the print server and shared printer. - When Windows prompts, enter credentials trusted by that print server, using the required domain or server prefix.
- After the connection succeeds, run the printer installation again from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device, or open the shared printer from the same UNC path.
You can instead save a trusted credential for the print server in Credential Manager → Windows Credentials. Remove an old print-server entry first if Windows keeps submitting a former password.
Check authentication policy before changing it
Incompatible LAN Manager or NTLM settings can be reported as a bad-password logon failure even when the typed password is correct. They can also count as failed attempts and eventually lock the account. Compare the client and server policies with your organization’s current security standard before changing anything.
On an affected Windows computer, policy settings are visible in Local Security Policy → Local Policies → Security Options. Domain-managed computers may receive the effective setting from Group Policy instead, so a local change can be overwritten. Do not weaken authentication protocols simply to make one connection work; identify which side requires the incompatible setting and have the administrator align the policies safely.

Error 0x569 (1385), ERROR_LOGON_TYPE_NOT_GRANTED, means the account used to join the computer has not been granted Access this computer from the network on the servicing domain controller. It is not the ordinary “unknown user name or bad password” result.

Restore the required user right
- On the domain’s Group Policy management system, edit the policy that applies to the domain controller handling the join.
- Go to Computer Configuration → Windows Settings → Security Settings → Local Policies → User Rights Assignment → Access this computer from the network.
- Add the approved joining account or group, while preserving your organization’s security design. Check the corresponding deny-right policy as well; a deny assignment overrides an allow assignment.
- Allow the policy to apply, then retry the join with the intended domain account.
Validate DNS and directory reachability
Domain joining depends on finding the correct domain controllers. On the client, inspect ipconfig /all and confirm that DNS servers point to the organization’s Active Directory DNS service rather than an unrelated public resolver. Check the DNS suffix, resolve the domain and domain-controller names, and verify that the client can reach them. Remove stale or duplicate DNS records when they identify an old computer or controller. Review the join and system diagnostic logs for the specific failure rather than treating every join error as a password problem.
Replication error 1396: investigate the target account name
Error 1396 says “Logon failure: The target account name is incorrect.” It is a distinct Active Directory replication error. Re-entering a password will not correct a mismatched target account name, broken trust relationship or directory inconsistency.
- Confirm that the source and destination domain controllers resolve each other’s current names and addresses.
- Check that the computer or service account used by the replication relationship still exists in the expected domain.
- Look for trust, secure-channel and duplicate-name problems in the directory and domain-controller logs.
- Use your organization’s Active Directory replication diagnostics to identify which naming context and partner are failing, then correct the account or trust issue before forcing another synchronization.
Scheduled tasks, services and synchronization tools
A background task can continue using credentials that were valid before a password change. Open the task or service properties and inspect the configured “run as” account, then update the password using the required domain-qualified name. For a directory synchronization product that reports 0x8007052e, verify the configured Active Directory account, its domain and its current password; forms such as DOMAINadministrator or [email protected] may be required by the product. Check whether the account is disabled, expired or locked before saving the configuration again.
What to record if the problem persists
- The exact numeric code and complete message.
- The operation, target server or printer, and the account format used.
- Whether the account works interactively and on any other target.
- Whether a Credential Manager entry or mapped-drive session was removed.
- Account lockout, expiry, disablement and password-change status.
- Client and server authentication-policy settings.
- DNS results, domain-controller reachability and relevant Windows event logs.
This record lets an administrator separate a credential typo from a scope error, stale secret, policy mismatch, missing user right or directory-health problem without causing more lockouts.
