Error messages you may see
Windows may show one of these reported variants:
- “The program can’t start because windowslivelogin.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The application failed to start because windowslivelogin.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading windowslivelogin.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “windowslivelogin.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “windowslivelogin.dll could not be loaded.”
- “DllRegisterServer in WindowsLiveLogin.dll failed.”
The exact wording varies by application and Windows version. The message does not automatically prove that the named file itself is missing; “the specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of the DLL is unavailable.
The 60-second answer
windowslivelogin.dll is associated with Microsoft Account Login Helper and older Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant software. It may be a Windows system copy or a legacy application component, so the correct repair depends first on which program reports the error and where the file belongs.
If the error appears across Windows or points to System32 or SysWOW64, install pending updates and run DISM followed by SFC. If it appears only when launching an old game, Windows Live Mail, or another Windows Live application, repair or reinstall that parent program instead. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random file site.
What causes the error
The most likely causes are:
| What happened | Best repair |
|---|---|
| A Windows copy was corrupted or deleted | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| A legacy Windows Live component was incompletely installed | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit component is present | Reinstall the application with the matching architecture |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Verify the path and Microsoft signature before restoring it |
| The application installation or user profile is damaged | Repair the application or test another profile |
| A dependency is missing | Repair the parent application rather than replacing this DLL |
Older Windows installations may contain windowslivelogin.dll under C:WindowsSystem32. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy may appear under C:WindowsSysWOW64. Older Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant installations used WindowsLiveLogin.dll under Common FilesMicrosoft SharedWindows Live.

The capitalization difference is not a different repair method. Windows file systems generally treat those names as the same filename, while older installers and documentation may use WindowsLiveLogin.dll.
Step 1: Identify the failing program and file path
Before changing files, establish whether the error belongs to Windows or to one application.
- Note the program named in the error window.
- Ask whether the problem occurs during Windows startup or only when opening a particular game or application.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Check whether the program is an old Windows Live product, Games for Windows–LIVE title, Windows Live Mail installation, or another legacy application.
- If the error displays a path, record it exactly.
You can also search for existing copies:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, enter
windowslivelogin.dll. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click a result, select Open file location, then inspect the folder.
A copy in System32 or SysWOW64 points toward Windows servicing. A copy under an application folder or Common FilesMicrosoft SharedWindows Live points toward the program that installed it.
Do not select a replacement merely because its version number looks newer. Historical records include 32-bit and 64-bit builds associated with different Windows generations, but those builds are not universal substitutes.

Step 2: Repair the parent application first
Use this path when only one game or application reports the error.
For a modern Windows application
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help:
- Return to Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the application again from the publisher’s official installer.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the installation requires elevated permissions.
For a legacy game, use its original setup media, the publisher’s official installer, or the game platform’s Verify or Repair function. The parent installer is the safest source for the matching Windows Live component.

A restored DLL does not guarantee that an old Games for Windows–LIVE title will work on a current Windows installation. The service and other compatibility requirements may be obsolete independently of this file.
Check the application’s architecture
A 32-bit program needs its 32-bit dependencies. A 64-bit program needs 64-bit dependencies. On 64-bit Windows, the names are easy to misunderstand:
C:WindowsSystem32normally contains 64-bit system binaries.C:WindowsSysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system binaries.
Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32, or a 64-bit file into SysWOW64, to silence an error. Reinstalling the parent application is safer because it supplies the architecture and dependent files expected by that program.
Step 3: Install Windows updates
Use this step when the error affects Windows components, appeared after an interrupted update, or involves a copy under System32 or SysWOW64.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not require an immediate restart.
- Test the affected program again.
Windows servicing can restore protected system components without manually copying files. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Step 4: Run DISM, then System File Checker
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a source.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working. When it completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and retest the application.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test the program again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM once more, restart, and repeat SFC. If DISM says the image cannot be repaired, use Microsoft’s repair-image guidance and a matching Windows repair source rather than downloading the DLL separately.

Running SFC and DISM manually can involve repeated scans, unclear results, and several rounds of troubleshooting. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the DLL.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 5: Check antivirus quarantine and the digital signature
If the file disappeared immediately after a security scan, inspect quarantine before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
windowslivelogin.dll. - Check the quarantined file’s original path and the program associated with it.
- Restore it only if the path is expected and the file came from a trusted Microsoft or application installation.
To inspect a file that still exists:
- Right-click the DLL.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft or the expected trusted publisher.
An unsigned file in a temporary folder, a user-writable folder, or an unexpected application directory deserves further malware investigation rather than automatic restoration. Run a full scan in Windows Security. Do not exclude the file from protection merely to make the application start.
Step 6: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A display, storage, or chipset driver does not normally install windowslivelogin.dll. Driver work is relevant only if the application began failing after a driver change and Windows reports a broader device or compatibility problem.

Do not install a graphics, audio, or chipset driver solely because a DLL website recommends it. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan considers outdated, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it as an optional convenience, not as proof that a driver caused this DLL error.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does regsvr32 apply?
Usually, no. regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose an entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Some builds of WindowsLiveLogin.dll expose registration functions, but registration should be attempted only when the original installer or the application’s documented repair process explicitly requires it. A missing file, wrong architecture, missing dependency, or damaged installation will not be fixed by registering an arbitrary copy.
If a trusted, matching installer specifically instructs you to register a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit registration tool is normally:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:pathtoWindowsLiveLogin.dll"
For a 64-bit DLL, the 64-bit tool is normally:
%SystemRoot%System32regsvr32.exe "C:pathtowindowslivelogin.dll"
Replace the path only with the path supplied by the trusted installation. Errors such as “entry point not found” or 0x80070005 mean the registration command is not appropriate or lacks the expected file and permissions. Stop there and repair the application instead.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a recent update, driver installation, application installation, or system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs without normally removing personal files. Back up important work first. If no suitable restore point exists, use the affected application’s recovery process or a Windows repair installation.

Why you should not download this DLL manually
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, a modified file, or a DLL with missing dependencies. Copying the file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory may also hide the real problem while damaging another program.
Use these sources instead:
- Windows Update and Windows servicing for a Windows system copy.
- The affected program’s official installer or repair function for a legacy application copy.
- Windows Security and the file’s digital signature for verification.
There is no current Microsoft standalone redistributable download specifically intended to replace this DLL. Historic package names such as wllogin_32.msi and wllogin_64.msi do not prove that an old package is suitable for your current Windows version.
FAQ
Is windowslivelogin.dll a Windows file?
It can be associated with Windows system installations, especially copies under System32 or SysWOW64, and it also appears in older Windows Live Sign-in Assistant installations. The path and affected program determine the repair.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or a device driver?
No file-specific evidence identifies it as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or driver file. Installing those packages is not the normal remedy.
Why does the error say WindowsLiveLogin.dll?
Older Windows Live installers and documentation used that capitalization. The name refers to the same Windows Live login component family.
What if the error returns after every reboot?
Check antivirus quarantine, startup entries, and the application that requests the file. If it affects only one Windows profile, test the application from another profile. If it affects all profiles, return to Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and application repair.

Do not enable or disable Windows Features merely because a DLL site recommends it. The file is not repaired by toggling an unrelated feature. Use the parent application installer or Windows servicing based on the file’s location.
What if reinstalling the program does not help?
Confirm that the installer matches the program’s architecture, inspect the signature and quarantine history, run DISM and SFC, then try System Restore if the timing is known. If Windows itself cannot be repaired, use a matching repair source or an in-place repair before considering a reset or clean reinstall. Back up personal files before the final escalation.
