A new rerelease of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger has been reported, with video sourced from original tapes digitized through an archive-restoration project led by Jim Vessella. The claim comes from a Bluesky post by Steve Lin on October 11, 2026—not an EA announcement—so a remaster, its release date, and its features are not confirmed.
What has been reported about a Wing Commander III remaster?
Steve Lin’s Bluesky post says a rerelease is coming with video taken from the original tapes, and credits Vessella with leading work to digitize EA’s video archive. The post does not provide technical details about the tapes or the restoration, and it is not a direct statement from EA or Vessella. Source

That distinction matters: the available evidence supports describing this as a reported rerelease, not an officially confirmed EA remaster. No release date, platforms, or product listing for a new edition are established.

Has EA confirmed a new edition?
EA’s product page identifies Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger as a PC game released on March 28, 1994, published by Electronic Arts. The page currently displays “Not Available” and does not announce a remaster or rerelease. That status describes the original product listing; it is not evidence that a new edition is planned. Which features are being discussed?
A Reddit post reproduces a claimed “30th Anniversary Edition” feature list, but points to a Bluesky post rather than an EA press release or official product page. None of the listed features is confirmed. The anniversary label should not be treated as an official edition name or as a release-date clue. Community post and reported list
- Kilrathi Saga integration
- Master FMVs and upscaling
- A community enhancement patch
- Gameplay up to 60 fps
- Controller support
- Availability through Steam, GOG, and the EA app
Until an official listing or statement appears, these are possibilities in community discussion—not specifications to rely on when deciding whether or where to buy the game.

Why do original video tapes matter for this game?
EA describes Wing Commander III as a space-combat simulation interwoven with professionally scripted and filmed scenes starring Mark Hamill, John Rhys-Davies, and Malcolm McDowell. A contemporary 1995 technical review says the combined English, French, and German versions were distributed across four CD-ROMs and that movie files were among the game’s largest files. That context helps explain the interest in recovering original video materials; it does not establish what tapes were found or what quality a rerelease’s footage would have. 1995 technical review
What should players watch for next?
The key unanswered questions are whether EA or Vessella confirms the project and, if so, what the restoration and release actually include. An official announcement or product page would be needed to establish the release date, platforms, video source and quality, compatibility features, store availability, and whether a physical edition is planned. For now, the only sourced update is the reported rerelease claim, not a confirmed set of editions to compare.
