Record average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, CPU and GPU utilization, memory use, and temperatures. Then work through updates, background-process cleanup, power behavior, storage maintenance, bottleneck diagnosis, and cooling in that order.
This approach answers both common complaints—low frame rates and stutter—without pretending that one setting produces a universal FPS increase. If an older CPU, GPU, or platform is the limiting part, software adjustments may have little effect; an upgrade matched to the measured bottleneck is then the lasting solution.

1. Establish a baseline before changing anything
A baseline turns optimization into a repeatable experiment instead of a sequence of guesses. Choose one game and one demanding, repeatable scene: the game’s built-in benchmark, a fixed route, or a saved location that reproduces the problem. Use the same resolution, graphics preset, upscaling choice, frame-rate cap, and display mode for every run.
Run the test consistently
- Restart the PC or close the same set of applications before each comparison.
- Load the identical scene and play or benchmark for long enough to include the stutter you normally notice.
- Do not change several settings between runs. Record one change, the result, and whether the change is reversible.
- Run a second pass when a result looks surprising. A background update or shader-compilation event can make a single run misleading.
Record the measurements that matter
- Average FPS: useful for overall throughput, but it can hide short stalls.
- 1% lows: a view of the slower frames that often correlates better with perceived hitching.
- Frame-time consistency: a steady sequence of frame times usually feels smoother than the same average FPS with spikes.
- CPU and GPU utilization: note overall use and, where available, individual CPU-thread activity.
- Memory and disk activity: watch for RAM exhaustion, paging, or sudden storage reads during a hitch.
- Temperatures and clocks: log the CPU and GPU temperature and whether clock speeds fall during the problem.
An on-screen monitoring overlay or the game’s benchmark report is sufficient. Keep a simple log with the date, driver version, Windows build, game settings, and measured results. Without this record, a sharper image, a quieter fan, or a different scene can be mistaken for a performance gain.

2. Update Windows, graphics drivers, and chipset software
Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance lists Windows updates and optional driver updates among the first remedies to try. Install them before tuning so that later tests are not measuring an old software stack.
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings and select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update, open Advanced options, then Optional updates. Review optional driver updates and install appropriate ones, restarting afterward.
Optional drivers are not automatically right for every system. Read the device name and date, and avoid replacing a known-good specialist driver merely because it is newer. For graphics and chipset packages, use the support page of the GPU or motherboard/platform manufacturer, select the exact Windows edition and hardware model, and follow its clean-install or upgrade instructions. Retest the identical baseline after each driver family, rather than updating everything and losing the ability to identify the cause of a change.
Keep a recovery path
Create a restore point or confirm that the driver installer offers rollback before making a major change. If a new driver introduces crashes, black screens, or worse frame-time behavior, use Device Manager to open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when Windows has retained the previous package. A clean reinstall from the hardware maker can help when an update was interrupted or files became corrupted.
3. Remove background contention without disabling protection
Background software competes for CPU time, RAM, disk bandwidth, and sometimes GPU resources. Microsoft specifically recommends reviewing resource-heavy processes and startup applications.
Find what is consuming resources
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, sort by CPU, Memory, Disk, or GPU and note programs that spike while the game stutters.
- Use Performance to watch utilization graphs during the repeatable test.
- Open Startup apps and disable launchers, updaters, or helpers you do not need at sign-in.
Close only applications you recognize and do not need for the session. Keep Windows security components, accessibility software, audio services, and device utilities that your setup requires. Do not end an unfamiliar system process simply because it uses memory; identify it first, and use the publisher’s documentation if necessary.

Prepare a clean gaming session
- Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, and video exports while benchmarking.
- Quit browsers with many active tabs if they are consuming substantial memory or CPU.
- Leave required voice chat, controller, capture, or accessibility tools running and include them in every comparison.
- After changing startup entries, restart once before measuring so the result reflects the new boot state.
Background cleanup can improve consistency when another process is the cause of a spike. It cannot make a CPU or GPU render frames faster than its hardware allows.
4. Choose a power mode deliberately
Windows power modes are a trade-off, not a free performance switch. On a plugged-in desktop or laptop, test Best performance when maximum responsiveness is the goal. Microsoft states, "Selecting Best performance increases power consumption," and warns that laptops can drain faster and run warmer in this mode.

- Open Settings and select System.
- Choose Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, select Best performance while plugged in, then repeat the baseline.
Windows 10 and classic power settings
- Open Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Select Additional power settings to open the classic Power Options panel.
- Choose a high-performance plan only for a controlled test, then compare it with your normal balanced plan.
Use the balanced mode when battery life, fan noise, or heat matters more than the last increment of responsiveness. If Best performance raises temperatures enough to trigger throttling, it can produce a worse result despite the more aggressive setting. Measure rather than assuming.
5. Maintain storage and game files
Windows storage maintenance is system hygiene. Keep reasonable free space on the Windows and game volumes, remove unnecessary temporary files, and use the built-in drive-optimization tool appropriate to the drive type. These steps can prevent a nearly full disk or maintenance backlog from adding avoidable delays, but they cannot compensate for a CPU or GPU bottleneck.
Free space safely
- Open Settings > System > Storage and review Temporary files and category usage.
- Remove caches and temporary items you recognize, retaining downloads or personal files you still need.
- Configure Storage Sense if you want Windows to perform recurring cleanup, and review its deletion rules first.
Optimize the drive
Search Windows for Defragment and Optimize Drives, open the tool, select the target volume, and choose Optimize. Windows applies the operation suited to the detected drive. Do not interrupt the process during a benchmark, and do not treat it as an FPS booster; its purpose is maintaining normal storage behavior.

Check game-file integrity when symptoms point to corruption
If a game crashes, shows missing assets, or repeatedly recompiles shaders after an update, use that game’s launcher option to verify or repair files. The exact label differs by launcher. Retest only after the verification completes and the same shader-building work has finished, otherwise the first run may measure maintenance rather than gameplay.

6. Identify the actual bottleneck
Use the baseline overlay to decide whether the graphics processor, a processor thread, memory, storage, background software, or heat is limiting performance. A high number in one utilization graph is not automatically a fault; the pattern across the run matters.
| Observed pattern | Likely limit | First manual tests | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPU stays near saturation and clocks remain steady | GPU rendering load | Lower resolution or GPU-heavy settings such as ray-tracing quality, shadows, reflections, or volumetric effects; test an appropriate frame-rate cap. | Image quality or visual effects decrease; input latency may change with a cap. |
| One or more CPU threads are heavily loaded while GPU utilization is well below its ceiling | CPU or game-engine limit | Reduce CPU-heavy settings such as crowd, simulation, view-distance, or physics detail; close unnecessary background work. | Fewer world details or less simulation; a platform upgrade may be required. |
| RAM use approaches capacity and disk activity spikes during hitches | Memory pressure or paging | Close memory-heavy applications, reduce the game’s texture or asset setting if appropriate, and check whether the system needs more RAM. | Lower texture detail or reduced multitasking; adding memory requires compatible modules. |
| Short disk-activity spikes coincide with asset pop-in or pauses | Storage or background I/O | Pause downloads and synchronization, verify free space, and compare the game on a healthy drive. | Moving a game requires time and adequate capacity; storage changes do not raise a CPU-limited frame rate. |
| Temperatures rise toward the component limit and clocks fall | Thermal throttling | Improve airflow, clean dust safely, review fan curves, and retest with the same ambient conditions. | More fan noise, hardware cost, or installation work. |
These are diagnostic inferences, not guarantees. Validate each conclusion by changing one related variable and repeating the same scene. If lowering resolution barely changes FPS while a CPU thread remains saturated, buying a faster graphics card will not address that particular limit.
7. Tune in-game settings for your target
Choose the performance target first: higher average FPS, stronger 1% lows, steadier frame times, or lower latency. Then adjust the settings that influence the diagnosed limit.
When the GPU is the limit
Test resolution scale, ray-tracing features, shadows, reflections, ambient-occlusion quality, volumetric effects, and anti-aliasing. Change one setting, run the baseline, and keep the change only if it improves the target metric without an unacceptable visual cost. A frame-rate cap just below a refresh-rate or consistency limit can reduce large frame-time swings, but its value depends on the display and workload.

When the CPU is the limit
Test crowd density, view distance, simulation quality, physics, foliage distance, and background applications. A lower resolution often does little when the CPU is already limiting the frame rate. If the game offers a threaded-rendering or scheduling option, document its original state and compare both settings rather than assuming one is universally faster.
When latency is the priority
Use the game’s latency or queueing options only when you can measure their effect. A higher average FPS is not identical to lower input latency, and an aggressive power mode can increase heat without solving a queueing bottleneck. Keep the display refresh rate, synchronization setting, and frame cap constant while comparing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Control temperatures and airflow
Every component produces heat under load. Microsoft explains that Windows thermal management can reduce performance to control temperature; Steam support likewise advises treating temperatures approaching CPU limits as a likely problem and lists a better heat sink or better ventilation as hardware remedies. A thermal limit is therefore a performance issue, not merely a comfort issue.
Confirm throttling before buying hardware
- Run the baseline long enough for temperatures to stabilize.
- Record CPU and GPU temperatures, clocks, fan speeds where available, and utilization from the start to the end of the run.
- Look for a temperature rise followed by a clock or FPS drop. Compare with a shorter cool-down run to distinguish heat buildup from a fixed bottleneck.
- Check that intake and exhaust vents are unobstructed, filters are not packed with dust, and the case has a clear path for air.
Clean with the PC powered down and follow the hardware maker’s precautions. On a laptop, keep the intake on a hard surface and use the manufacturer’s cooling modes cautiously; a cooling pad cannot overcome a blocked internal heatsink or a failing fan.
Desktop airflow: choosing a 120mm PC case fan
If measurements show that case airflow is the problem, a 120mm PC case fan is a practical, widely searchable category. Compatibility matters more than the product label. Check:

- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- Whether the case has a 120mm mounting position and enough clearance around the frame.
- Whether the fan uses a 4-pin PWM or 3-pin DC connector and whether the motherboard header supports it.
- The intended airflow direction; front or bottom fans generally provide intake while rear or top positions commonly exhaust, subject to the case design.
- Noise rating, speed range, and static-pressure characteristics appropriate to a filtered intake or radiator position.
- Available motherboard headers, splitter limits, and cable routing.
Install the fan so its frame arrows match the desired direction, secure it without overtightening, and retest under the same ambient conditions. Better airflow can prevent throttling; it does not guarantee a particular FPS increase.
CPU temperature limit: a tower air cooler
When the CPU is demonstrably hitting a thermal limit, compare a compatible CPU tower air cooler rather than choosing by appearance alone. Verify socket support, cooler height against the case’s maximum, RAM clearance, motherboard heatsink clearance, fan orientation, and the mounting hardware included for your platform. Recheck temperatures and clocks after installation. If the CPU was not the limiting component, a cooler purchase may reduce noise without changing game performance.
9. Match expectations to the hardware
Microsoft’s Windows guidance gives a modern quad-core such as the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel Core i5-12400 as an example baseline for current use, and cites the NVIDIA GTX 1660 Super or AMD Radeon RX 6600 as examples of entry-level gaming GPUs. These are examples from guidance accessed October 15, 2026, not a universal requirement or a promise that every game will perform the same on those parts.
Compare your measured bottleneck with the component you would replace. A GPU upgrade is rational when the GPU is saturated at your target resolution; a CPU or platform upgrade is rational when a processor thread limits FPS and lower GPU load confirms it. More RAM helps when capacity or paging is the problem, while a faster drive helps loading and asset streaming symptoms rather than a fixed render limit. Check motherboard socket, memory type, power-supply capacity, case clearance, and connector requirements before ordering any part.
10. Use a disciplined retest and stop when the evidence says to stop
Keep an optimization log
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Game and scene | Same benchmark or saved route, same run duration |
| Resolution and preset | Native resolution, named preset, fixed upscaling and frame cap |
| Change made | Windows power mode, one driver, one setting, or one airflow adjustment |
| Average FPS / 1% lows | Record both values from the same run |
| Frame-time behavior | Note spikes, traversal stutter, shader compilation, or smooth delivery |
| Utilization and temperatures | CPU thread pattern, GPU load, RAM use, clocks, and stabilized temperatures |
| Decision | Keep, undo, or repeat the test |
Recognize diminishing returns
Stop software tuning when repeated tests show no meaningful change, when a proposed setting costs more image quality or battery life than it is worth, or when the same component remains the limit after sensible adjustments. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from these steps and that upgrading can be the best long-term answer. Spend on the diagnosed constraint, not on a generic optimizer.
