winnsi.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, not a game-specific or Visual C++ runtime DLL. If Windows says it is missing, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest sequence is to install pending updates, run DISM, run System File Checker, and then check the Network Store Interface service. These steps restore the Windows component without introducing an incompatible or unsafe file.
What this file actually does
The reported description for winnsi.dll is Network Store Information RPC interface. It belongs to the Windows Network Store Interface, or NSI, networking component.
NSI provides network-interface notifications to Windows and to user-mode programs that need to react when network adapters or connections change. The related Windows service is named NSI. It normally starts automatically, and disabling it can remove network connectivity. Microsoft documents the service in its Windows service guidance.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%windir%System32winnsi.dll
%windir%SysWOW64winnsi.dll
Despite its name, System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system-file view used by 32-bit applications. Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation for the File System Redirector.
A game or application can report the error because it depends on Windows networking. That does not mean the game owns the DLL or that reinstalling the game will necessarily replace it.
Historical file-information records show Microsoft as the company and Microsoft Windows as the product. Reported versions and sizes vary by Windows release and architecture, so do not use one old version or file size as a universal reference.

The wording can vary. You may see “winnsi.dll is missing,” “winnsi.dll was not found,” “cannot find winnsi.dll,” “could not be loaded,” or “the application cannot start.” The complete path in the message is useful, so save it before changing anything.

A failed or interrupted update can leave a Windows component incomplete. Update Windows before attempting manual repairs.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Check again after restarting.
Microsoft provides the current procedure in its guide to installing Windows updates.
After the restart, launch the application that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with the repair commands below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store that Windows uses as a source for system-file repairs. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while. Do not close the window just because progress appears paused.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows, then test the affected program and your network connection.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If the file was the problem, the application should start normally after the restart.

If DISM fails
If DISM reports that source files could not be found:
- Restart Windows.
- Confirm that the computer is online.
- Run the DISM command again from an elevated Command Prompt.
- If it fails again, use a matching Windows installation source with the
/Sourceand/LimitAccessoptions.
The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture. Do not guess at an image path. Follow Microsoft’s Windows image repair guidance.
If SFC says it could not repair some files
Restart and run DISM again, followed by SFC. If SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files:

- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select System and inspect errors around the time of the failure.
- Review the SFC details in the CBS log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
Repeated corruption can indicate a damaged Windows image or a storage problem, not just one missing DLL. Check the drive’s health using the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility or Windows storage warnings, and back up important files before attempting major recovery work.
Fix 3: Check the file path and Microsoft signature
Use an elevated Command Prompt to see whether Windows has the expected copies:
dir "%windir%System32winnsi.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64winnsi.dll"
The second command may fail on 32-bit Windows because that directory is not present. That is normal.

A valid Windows copy should be under the Windows directory. A copy found in a game folder, Downloads, Temp, or a user-profile directory should not automatically be trusted.
To check the signature in PowerShell:
- Open Start.
- Type
PowerShell. - Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32winnsi.dll"
A genuine system copy should show a valid Microsoft signature. If the result is unsigned, invalid, or points to an unexpected location, do not replace or allow the file blindly. Run a full Windows Security scan and investigate recent antivirus or malware events.
Fix 4: Check the NSI service
The file can exist while the related service is stopped or unable to start.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
sc query NSI
sc qc NSI
Look for the service state. If it is stopped, try:
sc start NSI
Then test the network and the affected application.
Do not disable NSI, change its dependencies, or disable RPC-related services to make an error disappear. NSI depends on other Windows components, and a dependency failure can prevent it from starting. Microsoft describes several NSI startup failure conditions in its NSI troubleshooting guidance.

If sc start NSI returns an error, record the exact message. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC rather than forcing a new service configuration.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious system file. In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Inspect entries involving
winnsi.dll.
Restore a quarantined file only if all of these conditions are met:
- the recorded path is the Windows system directory;
- the file has a valid Microsoft signature;
- a second-opinion scan finds no malware;
- the detection appears to be a false positive.
Do not restore an unsigned copy just because a game requests it. Microsoft notes that Defender can detect a restored quarantined file again unless it is explicitly allowed. Its Protection History documentation explains these controls.

If malware is suspected, run a full scan first. A missing DLL alone does not prove infection, but a suspicious copy outside the Windows directory deserves attention.
Fix 6: Repair the application only after Windows is healthy
If winnsi.dll exists in the correct Windows directory, has a valid signature, and DISM and SFC report no problems, the application may be generating a misleading error.
Use the program’s own repair or verification feature first. For a game launcher, this is commonly called Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair. If that does not help:
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Back up local saves or configuration files.
- Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the latest version from the developer’s official installer or launcher.
- Test it before adding unofficial modifications.
Also inspect the complete error path. If the message points to a private application directory rather than %windir%System32, the launcher may be loading a conflicting local copy. Do not overwrite that copy with a DLL downloaded from the internet. Repair the application installation instead.
Fix 7: Consider drivers only when the evidence points there
A network-driver failure can cause connectivity problems, but reinstalling a driver does not normally restore a missing Windows system DLL. Check Device Manager only when the problem began after a driver change, Windows shows an adapter error, or the network adapter is missing.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Properties and read the device status.
- Use the Driver tab to inspect the provider and date.
- If the issue began after an update, try Roll Back Driver.
- Otherwise, download the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer and install it.
- Restart Windows.

Do not install a random driver merely because an application reports winnsi.dll.
Fix 8: Use System Restore or in-place repair
Use System Restore when the failure began after a known driver, update, program, or system-setting change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue and restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft documents the process in its System Restore guide.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, use a matching in-place Windows repair or another recovery option. Back up important files first. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain how System Restore, reinstalling Windows, and Reset this PC differ.

What not to do
Do not download a replacement DLL
There is no legitimate standalone winnsi.dll redistributable. Random DLL download sites may provide the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, an unsigned file, or malware. Manual copying can also hide the actual component-store or service problem.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or official Windows repair media instead.

Do not run regsvr32 winnsi.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. Running it against this Windows networking component can produce an entry-point error and will not recreate a missing file.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
winnsi.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime file. Install Visual C++ only when the error names a runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Reinstalling DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ does not normally restore a missing Windows networking DLL.
FAQ
Is winnsi.dll malware?
Usually, the file is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. The filename alone does not establish whether a particular copy is safe. Check its Windows path and Microsoft signature, then scan suspicious copies.
Is winnsi.dll part of a game?
No. A game may report it because it uses Windows networking, but the file belongs to Windows. A game reinstall is appropriate only when the Windows copy is present and healthy and the application itself is damaged.
Can I copy it from another computer?
Avoid doing so. Windows builds, architectures, servicing states, and dependencies can differ. DISM and SFC are safer ways to restore the correct component.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file alone. Those packages apply only when the error identifies their own missing runtime files or the application has a separate documented dependency problem.
What if only a 32-bit program fails?
Check both Windows paths, but do not manually move files between System32 and SysWOW64. Let Windows servicing restore the correct architecture.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
Check the signature, query the NSI service, run DISM followed by SFC, and capture the complete error path. If Windows is healthy, verify or reinstall the specific application that reports the failure.
