“ The program can’t start because WinRing0.dll is missing from your computer.” The winring0.dll file is third-party software supplied with a hardware utility, not a Windows component.
You may also see:
- “WinRing0.dll was not found.”
- “This application has failed to start because WinRing0.dll was not found.”
- “WinRing0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Could not open WinRing0.dll.”
The wording varies by Windows version and application. The safest repair is to identify the program that owns the file, then update or reinstall that program from its publisher.
Which fix applies to you
Use the message and file location to choose the right path:
- The error names a hardware utility: repair or reinstall that application first.
- Windows Security shows a detection: check Protection history, then update the application before considering any restoration.
- The application starts but reports a driver or service error: check the companion
.sysdriver, architecture, Memory Integrity, and the vulnerable-driver blocklist. - The error appeared after uninstalling software: look for the stale
WinRing0_1_2_0service and use the former publisher’s cleanup procedure. - The file is in a temporary or unknown folder: treat it as a possible security issue rather than restoring it.
- Several Windows programs are failing: run DISM and SFC only after checking the application-specific causes.
What is winring0.dll?
winring0.dll belongs to WinRing0, also known as an OpenLibSys hardware-access library. It gives compatible x86 and x64 applications low-level access to hardware functions such as I/O ports, MSRs, and PCI information.

It is commonly bundled with programs for:
- Hardware monitoring
- Fan control
- RGB lighting
- Overclocking
- Benchmarking
- Gaming utilities

It is not part of Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a normal Windows installation. Windows does not provide a universal WinRing0 redistributable.
The DLL normally sits beside the application executable. Its related files may include:

The DLL is a user-mode library. The .sys file is a kernel driver. Therefore, a missing DLL message can sometimes be a symptom of a blocked, missing, or mismatched driver.
Fix 1: Identify and reinstall the owning application
This is the most likely solution for a normal missing-DLL message.
Find the application
- Read the complete error window and note the executable name.
- If the error appears during startup, open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Search for recently installed hardware, fan, RGB, overclocking, monitoring, or benchmarking software.
- Check Task Manager:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for utilities that launch when Windows starts.
- If Windows Security removed the file, continue to the Protection History check below.
If you can locate the remaining DLL, right-click it, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Check whether the signer and file path match the application you expected. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unfamiliar user-profile directory needs extra scrutiny.
Repair or reinstall it
First check whether the application supports repair:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the three dots beside the application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the application.
If there is no Repair option:
- Download the latest installer from the application publisher’s official website.
- Close the application and its launcher.
- In Settings → Apps → Installed apps, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official installer.
- If the installer offers separate x86 and x64 builds, choose the one matching the application and operating system.
- Restart again, then launch the program.
For a game or launcher, use its built-in repair function first. Open the launcher, select the game, open its settings or management menu, and choose Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files, depending on the launcher.

A successful repair normally recreates the DLL beside the program executable and allows the utility to open without the loader message. If the same error returns immediately, do not copy a replacement DLL into a Windows folder. Continue with the security and driver checks.

Fix 2: Check Defender Protection history
Microsoft identifies VulnerableDriver:WinNT/Winring0 as a valid detection. Legacy WinRing0 drivers have a known security vulnerability and can provide powerful hardware access, so a quarantine is not automatically a false positive.
To inspect the event:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the event involving WinRing0.
- Record the detected file name, full path, threat name, and action taken.
If the file belongs to a known application, do this before restoring anything:
- Visit that application publisher’s official website.
- Download its current installer or update.
- Install the updated build.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the application now uses a newer hardware-access component.
If the publisher has confirmed that a specific file is required and you have verified its path and digital signature, Protection History may provide a Restore or Allow on device action. Use it only when you independently trust the application and understand that an exclusion or restoration reduces protection. A safer long-term solution is an application update that no longer relies on the vulnerable legacy driver.
If the file is in an unknown directory or belongs to an unfamiliar executable, leave it quarantined. Update Defender, run a Full scan, and consider Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Virus & threat protection → Scan options.

A 32-bit application should use WinRing0.dll; a 64-bit application should use WinRing0x64.dll. The related driver must also match the application and Windows architecture. Substituting one file for the other can produce a loader error or a service failure.
Check the application’s architecture in Task Manager:

- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Compare the application’s platform with the package installed by its publisher.
For the driver:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Select View → Show hidden devices.
- Expand System devices and Software components.
- Look for an entry associated with the hardware utility or a warning icon.
- Right-click a clearly identified entry and select Properties.
- Check the General and Driver tabs for an error code, provider, and driver status.
Do not remove an unknown system device merely because its name resembles WinRing0. Reinstall the owning application instead, or follow the publisher’s documented driver-removal instructions.
If the publisher supplies a newer driver package, install it from the publisher’s official installer. Manually downloading a .sys file is not a safe substitute.
When manually checking many device entries and versions becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation requires the full version. It does not replace reinstalling the application that owns winring0.dll.
Fix 4: Check Memory Integrity and the vulnerable-driver blocklist
Windows may prevent a legacy WinRing0 driver from loading even when the DLL is present. Windows 11 enables vulnerable-driver blocking by default on supported configurations, and Memory Integrity can also reject older drivers.
Check Memory Integrity:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Device security.
- Select Core isolation details.
- Check Memory integrity.
- Restart if Windows reports that a change is pending.
Do not routinely turn Memory Integrity or the vulnerable-driver blocklist off to make an old utility work. That is a high-risk compatibility workaround, not a normal DLL repair. First look for a supported application update or contact the publisher for a replacement driver.
If the event says the WinRing0_1_2_0 service could not start, the driver may be missing, blocked, or pointed at a file that no longer exists. Common Service Control Manager messages include:

These messages do not by themselves prove malware. They indicate that the service registration, driver file, architecture, or security policy needs investigation.
Fix 5: Remove a stale service after uninstalling the app
Some applications leave the legacy service name WinRing0_1_2_0 behind after removal.

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall the application that previously used WinRing0.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the event or error has disappeared.
- If it remains, look for the publisher’s cleanup utility or documented removal procedure.
Avoid blindly deleting service registry keys or using random “service cleaners.” If you need to inspect the service, open Terminal (Admin) and run:
sc query WinRing0_1_2_0
If Windows reports that the service does not exist, there is no service with that exact name. If it does exist, record its state and path, then use the original publisher’s removal instructions. Do not delete it until you have confirmed which application created it.

winring0.dll is a third-party application file, so SFC normally will not restore it. Use Windows repair commands only when you also have broader symptoms, such as damaged Windows components or multiple unrelated applications failing.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to finish before running the next. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. Restart Windows and test the application. If the commands report that no corruption was found, return to the application installer, Defender history, and driver checks. These commands will not normally recreate a private WinRing0 file.
Repeating SFC and DISM without identifying what changed rarely fixes an application-specific dependency. Do not download or register the DLL
Do not download an isolated winring0.dll from a random DLL website. The file may have the wrong architecture, version, exports, signature, or companion driver, and it may contain malware. It also leaves the original application installation broken.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Windows normally searches the application directory first, where private DLLs belong.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair command. WinRing0 is not documented as a COM or ActiveX library that needs registration. It uses application initialization and a companion kernel driver, so registering the DLL does not install or repair that driver.
There is no universal current WinRing0 installer for end users. Use the official installer for the application that installed the file.
Prevention and escalation checklist
Before restoring or replacing anything, confirm:
- The full error text and executable name
- The DLL’s complete path
- The owning application and publisher
- The file’s digital signature
- Defender Protection History
- Whether the application is x86 or x64
- Whether the matching
.sysdriver exists - Whether Memory Integrity or driver blocking is involved
- Whether
WinRing0_1_2_0remains after uninstalling software
Escalate to the application publisher if its current installer still triggers Defender, the driver is blocked, or the application cannot identify its required architecture. Quarantine the file and perform a full or offline scan if it came from an unknown path, appears beside an unfamiliar executable, or is unrelated to software you knowingly installed.

Usually not. Those packages do not provide WinRing0. Install them only when the application publisher specifically requires them and the application reports a separate runtime error.
Why does the application still fail after I restore the DLL?
The companion driver may be missing, blocked, mismatched, or left with an invalid service path. Check the application architecture, .sys files, Protection History, Memory Integrity, and service status.
Should I disable Memory Integrity?
Not as a routine fix. Ask the software publisher for an updated driver first. Disabling a security feature can restore compatibility while increasing exposure to vulnerable drivers.
