winsrpc.dll Missing: Repair the Windows WINS Component Safely

Length12 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before replacing anything, note:

  • Which program displays the error
  • Whether it appears at startup, during installation, or when using a feature
  • Whether the computer runs 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
  • Whether the error began after Windows Update, antivirus activity, cleanup software, or a system repair
  • Whether the affected computer is a Windows Server system that still uses WINS
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

winsrpc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows file. The filename refers to the WINS RPC LIBRARY, a Windows component associated with the Windows Internet Name Service and its remote administration functions.

If the file is missing or damaged, the safest first response is not to download a replacement. Repair Windows servicing components with DISM and then let System File Checker restore protected files.

What winsrpc.dll is

winsrpc.dll ships with the Microsoft Windows operating system and is published by Microsoft Corporation. WINS stands for Windows Internet Name Service, a legacy service that maps NetBIOS names to IP addresses.

The file is associated with the remote administration and RPC functionality of a WINS server. Microsoft documents WINS as a legacy technology and recommends DNS for new network deployments and migration away from WINS.

This does not mean that every program reporting winsrpc.dll is a WINS administration tool. An older utility may simply be loading a Windows dependency, or the message may identify the first file involved in a larger dependency failure.

The file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or game-specific library. Reinstalling those packages is not the evidence-based starting point for this error.

Where should winsrpc.dll be located

On a normal Windows installation, protected system files are stored under the Windows directory. The expected locations are generally:

  • %WINDIR%System32 for the native system architecture
  • %WINDIR%SysWOW64 for 32-bit system files on 64-bit Windows

The folder names are easy to misunderstand. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every Windows release has an identical pair of copies. File presence and architecture depend on the installed Windows edition and build.

To search Windows directories, open Command Prompt and run:

where /r %WINDIR% winsrpc.dll

A result outside a Windows system directory does not automatically prove malware, but a copy in Downloads, Temp, an application folder, or a user-profile directory deserves closer inspection. Do not replace the protected Windows copy with that file.

What the error messages mean

Windows may display messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because winsrpc.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because winsrpc.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting winsrpc.dll.”
  • “Error loading winsrpc.dll.”
  • “winsrpc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages do not always prove that winsrpc.dll itself is the only problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by the named DLL is missing. “Not designed to run on Windows” can indicate corruption, an incorrect architecture, or a DLL copied from a different Windows build.

That is why manually copying a file into a system directory often fails to solve the underlying problem.

Fix 1: Install updates and restart

A failed update or incomplete servicing operation can leave protected Windows files unavailable. Start with the least disruptive repair.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Try the affected program again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart Windows and test the program.

If the error appeared immediately after an update, complete any pending restart first. If the problem remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading winsrpc.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Run DISM, then System File Checker

This is the primary repair for a missing, corrupted, or altered Windows component. DISM repairs the Windows component store, which SFC uses as a source for protected system files.

Open an elevated Command Prompt

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.

Run this command first:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. The process can appear to pause for a while. Do not close the window while it is working.

When DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Then restart Windows and launch the program that produced the error.

How to interpret the result

If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and repaired them, restart and test the affected program.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the problem may be a missing dependency, an application-specific installation problem, or a WINS role issue rather than direct corruption of winsrpc.dll.

If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run DISM and SFC again. If the result does not change, continue to the repair-source and recovery steps below.

Manually repeating commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what requires attention; its repair function is provided by the full version, and it is not required for Windows servicing or guaranteed to fix every winsrpc.dll case.

Fix 3: Use a matching Windows repair source

DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows servicing. If Windows Update cannot provide them, use a Windows installation source that matches the installed system.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The source must match the installed Windows edition, language, and architecture. Using a source from another release can create additional servicing or compatibility problems.

After connecting or mounting the matching installation media, run an elevated Command Prompt command similar to:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the Windows source.

When DISM finishes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and test the affected program. If you do not have a correctly matching source, do not guess at the path or copy winsrpc.dll from another computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check the file’s location and Microsoft signature

If a copy of the file exists, verify that it belongs to Windows before considering any restoration.

Open PowerShell as administrator:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type PowerShell.
  3. Right-click Windows PowerShell.
  4. Select Run as administrator.

Check the signature of the normal 64-bit system path with:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32winsrpc.dll"

Then inspect its metadata:

(Get-Item "$env:windirSystem32winsrpc.dll").VersionInfo

A legitimate protected copy should be located in a Windows system directory and carry a valid Microsoft signature. A missing signature, an unexpected publisher, or a copy located in a temporary or user directory is a reason to investigate rather than restore it blindly.

If PowerShell reports that the file does not exist, that supports using DISM and SFC. It does not justify downloading a replacement from an unverified source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a file after detecting a threat, or a false positive can remove a legitimate system component.

To review Microsoft Defender’s records:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. In Windows 11, select Privacy & security, then Windows Security. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review entries related to winsrpc.dll.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to restore a file. Restore a quarantined item only after confirming its original path, Microsoft signature, and scan status. A file named winsrpc.dll found outside a Windows system directory should not be restored just because its filename looks familiar.

If malware is suspected, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and follow the security product’s remediation guidance. Then repair Windows with DISM and SFC if the system file remains absent.

Fix 6: Determine whether the program is actually using WINS

WINS is primarily relevant to older Windows Server environments and legacy NetBIOS networks. A Windows 11 or Windows 10 application may mention winsrpc.dll because it loads an old administration component, but that does not mean WINS is installed or required on the client computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask:

  • Is the affected program a legacy WINS administration console?
  • Does the computer connect to an older Windows Server network?
  • Did the error begin after removing or changing a server role?
  • Does the application fail only when opening WINS configuration or database features?

If the answer is yes, the repair belongs with the WINS Server role or its administration tools, not with a random standalone DLL.

On a supported Windows Server installation:

  1. Open Server Manager.
  2. Select Manage.
  3. Select Add Roles and Features.
  4. Continue through the wizard until the Server Roles or Features page.
  5. Review the installed WINS-related role or management component.
  6. Repair or reinstall the relevant role or tool using the matching Windows Server media.
  7. Restart if requested.
  8. Test the WINS administration utility.

Do not install WINS on a new network simply to silence this error. Microsoft treats WINS as legacy technology and recommends DNS and migration away from WINS.

If the error occurs in a third-party legacy administration program, repair or reinstall that program from its publisher. That is different from replacing the Windows copy of winsrpc.dll.

Fix 7: Repair the affected application

If only one application reports the error and Windows passes its integrity checks, the application may have its own damaged files or incompatible dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try the application’s built-in repair option first:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  4. Find the affected program.
  5. Select its menu or Advanced options, if available.
  6. Choose Repair.
  7. Test the program after the repair completes.

If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer. Back up application settings or data first.

Do not allow the installer to place an unverified winsrpc.dll into System32. A program-specific copy can be the wrong build or architecture, and it can conceal the actual installation problem.

Fix 8: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not necessarily use the same system path. On 64-bit Windows, Windows uses filesystem redirection to provide the appropriate system files to 32-bit programs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, and do not copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. A mismatch can produce “not designed to run on Windows” errors or cause the loader to report another missing module.

To identify the operating-system architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Review System type.

This tells you the architecture of Windows, not necessarily the architecture of the failing application. The safest way to correct an architecture mismatch is to repair Windows or reinstall the affected application with its correct installer.

Fix 9: Check drivers only when the error is part of a wider hardware problem

winsrpc.dll is not a graphics, audio, printer, or chipset driver file. Device Manager is therefore not the normal repair path for a direct winsrpc.dll error.

Use Device Manager only if the DLL message appears alongside hardware failures, an incomplete system upgrade, or a device that no longer works:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer. Do not replace a Windows DLL with a driver package.

If manually finding compatible drivers across several devices is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs the driver installation, and it is optional rather than a required fix for winsrpc.dll.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing Windows component and is generally irrelevant to winsrpc.dll.

Running a command such as this is not a suitable repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 winsrpc.dll

It may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not mean the file needs to be downloaded or that registration failed in a way that can be fixed with another copy.

Use regsvr32 only when the specific software vendor or Microsoft documentation says that the DLL is a self-registering component and gives the appropriate command.

Do not download winsrpc.dll from a DLL website

Random DLL download sites create several risks:

  • The file may contain malware or have been modified.
  • The version may belong to another Windows build.
  • The architecture may be wrong.
  • The file may lack a valid Microsoft signature.
  • Placing it in System32 can damage servicing or hide the actual dependency problem.
  • It may not fix the component store, application installation, or WINS role.

There is no verified official standalone Microsoft winsrpc.dll download package. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM repair files from a matching Windows installation source, Windows recovery options, System Restore, or a properly matched Windows repair installation.

Fix 10: Use System Restore when the timing is clear

System Restore is useful when the error began after a known update, driver installation, cleanup operation, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  7. Confirm the restore.
  8. Restart Windows and test the program.

System Restore returns system files, settings, and installed programs to an earlier state. Later changes can be lost, so back up important files first.

Do not use System Restore as a substitute for malware cleanup. If antivirus detected a suspicious copy outside the Windows directory, investigate that detection before restoring anything.

When to repair or reinstall Windows

Escalate to a Windows repair installation or recovery option when:

  • DISM cannot repair the component store
  • SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired corruption
  • The file is absent despite successful servicing attempts
  • Several Windows components fail, not just one application
  • Updates, Settings, or other built-in tools also behave incorrectly
  • The problem persists after a suitable System Restore

Back up personal data before major recovery work. A matching in-place repair can refresh Windows system components while preserving supported personal files and applications, but the available choices depend on the Windows edition and installation media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For older Windows NT or Windows Server environments, historical WINS version mismatches require the service pack or update designed for that release. A modern DLL copied from another system is not a safe substitute.

Frequently asked questions

Is winsrpc.dll malware?

Not by itself. winsrpc.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. Verify the location and Microsoft signature, and investigate copies found in Downloads, Temp, application directories, or user profiles.

Is winsrpc.dll part of Visual C++?

No evidence supports treating it as a Visual C++ Redistributable file. It is associated with Windows and WINS administration. Reinstall Visual C++ only when the affected application separately reports a Visual C++ runtime error.

Should I install DirectX or .NET?

Not for a winsrpc.dll error alone. DirectX and .NET repairs are application-specific and should be based on a separate error or the program publisher’s requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Windows computer have a 32-bit and 64-bit copy?

No universal claim should be made for every Windows release. On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 serve different architecture paths, but the actual presence of this file depends on the installed Windows components and build.

Why does the message say “module could not be found” when the file exists?

The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by winsrpc.dll, or the existing file may be incompatible or corrupted. Check the application installation and repair Windows rather than copying another DLL.

Does regsvr32 fix this file?

Generally no. regsvr32 is for DLLs that implement registration entry points. It is not a general-purpose Windows component repair command.

What is the correct first fix?

Install pending Windows updates, restart, run DISM, then run SFC:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

If the error is limited to an old WINS administration tool, repair the relevant Windows Server role or application after completing those checks.
