Start with this quick checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: Windows itself, one application, or a game
- Whether the problem started after a Windows update, failed update, cleanup, antivirus action, system restore, or disk problem
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the message says the file is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows
- Whether

The safest repair is usually to repair Windows rather than download an individual DLL. winsta.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, and replacing it with a random copy can create a second problem involving the wrong version, architecture, or malware.
What is winsta.dll?
winsta.dll is the Winstation Library, a Microsoft Windows system DLL supplied with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It supports Windows window stations, desktops, logon sessions, and related WinStation functionality. Microsoft describes window stations as Windows objects associated with desktops, clipboard access, global atoms, and interactive or service sessions. See Microsoft’s window station and desktop creation documentation.
This is not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX file, game middleware file, or application-owned runtime. A program can depend on it, but Windows normally supplies the component.

- File:
winsta.dll - Description: Winstation Library
- Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Product: Microsoft Windows Operating System
A file with this name is not automatically genuine just because it is called winsta.dll. Location, digital signature, architecture, and file condition all matter.
Where should winsta.dll be located?
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%SystemRoot%System32winsta.dll
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64winsta.dll
The names are confusing:
System32normally contains the native 64-bit system files.SysWOW64normally contains the 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.
Windows file-system redirection normally gives an application the architecture-compatible copy. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
Do not copy the file from System32 to SysWOW64, or the reverse, simply because one folder appears to be missing it. The two files serve different architectures.
On 32-bit Windows, there is generally no separate 64-bit copy. The exact version and size depend on the Windows edition, build, servicing level, architecture, and language. Historical file listings are not a reliable way to choose a replacement for a current installation.
What the error messages mean
“The program can’t start because winsta.dll is missing from your computer”
Windows or an application could not find a usable copy of the DLL when starting. The file may be missing, damaged, quarantined, inaccessible, or unavailable to the process because the Windows component store is damaged.
“winsta.dll was not found”
The program requested the DLL and Windows could not locate a compatible copy in the normal search locations. If only one application reports this, that application may be damaged even when Windows itself is healthy.
“winsta.dll could not be loaded”
Windows found a file with the expected name but could not load it. Corruption, incorrect architecture, incompatible dependencies, permissions, or a counterfeit copy in an application folder can cause this wording.
“The code execution cannot proceed because winsta.dll was not found”
This is another dependency error. The application cannot continue until Windows can provide a valid compatible system component.

“winsta.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
This message is more significant than a simple missing-file message. It can indicate a corrupted DLL, an incompatible Windows build, wrong architecture, or a non-Microsoft file masquerading as winsta.dll.
Fix 1: Restart, update Windows, and test again
A pending Windows update or incomplete servicing operation can temporarily leave system components unavailable.
- Save your work and restart Windows.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Test the affected program again.
If Windows reports that an update failed, restart once more and check Windows Update again. Do not begin by downloading winsta.dll from a DLL-sharing page. Such copies can contain malware, belong to the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the underlying component-store damage untouched.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of winsta.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source. The commands are documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. It may appear to pause for a while.
- Leave the Command Prompt window open if DISM reports an error, because the exact message may be useful.
When DISM completes successfully, run SFC in the same elevated window:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the program again.
How to interpret SFC results
If SFC says it did not find any integrity violations, Windows did not find damaged protected system files. If one program still fails, repair or reinstall that program.
If SFC says it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them, restart before testing. The repair may not take effect fully until Windows reloads the component.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them, do not download a replacement DLL immediately. Run DISM again, restart, and run:
sfc /scannow
To record the SFC entries that could not be repaired, use:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
This creates sfcdetails.txt on the desktop. The file can help identify whether winsta.dll was involved.

Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If Windows starts normally and only one program displays the error, the application may be damaged. The program normally depends on Windows’ copy of winsta.dll; it does not mean the application should supply its own replacement.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, select Reset only if you understand that the program may lose local settings or cached data.

For a game, open its official launcher and look for Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files. These options restore the game’s own damaged files without replacing Windows system files.
Recommended Free Tools
If repair fails, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher. If the application is the only thing affected, this is generally more appropriate than manually replacing a system DLL.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file after a false detection, although the particular detection must be checked rather than assumed to be false.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
winsta.dll. - Open the event details and check the detection name, path, and action.
- Do not restore the file unless you have confirmed that the detection is a false positive and the file is Microsoft-signed.
- Run a full scan after addressing the detection.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
If malware is suspected, remove the malware first. Restoring a system DLL while malicious software remains can allow the file to be removed or modified again.
A winsta.dll found in an unusual application directory is not automatically genuine. Do not whitelist it merely because its filename matches the Windows component.
Fix 5: Verify the file’s location and signature
If the file exists but the error continues, inspect it rather than replacing it blindly.
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Look for
winsta.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A valid Microsoft signature is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove that the file is in the correct location or architecture. The file should normally be in the Windows system directories, not beside an unrelated executable.
If the file is present in an application directory and the application reports an error, that copy may be damaged or may create a DLL-search-order problem. Do not overwrite it with a copy from the internet. Repair the application and Windows instead.
Fix 6: Check whether architecture is involved
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows normally uses the 32-bit Windows component from SysWOW64. A 64-bit program normally uses the native component from System32.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsArchitecture problems are more likely when:
- The error affects only an older 32-bit application.
- A system image was copied from another computer.
- A DLL was manually replaced.
- The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows.
- The program was installed from an unofficial or modified package.
Do not solve an architecture problem by copying the 64-bit file into the 32-bit directory. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then repair the application if necessary.
Fix 7: Update drivers only when the timing points to a driver problem
A driver does not normally install winsta.dll, but a failed driver update, system rollback, or corrupted Windows installation can coincide with DLL errors. Consider this step when the problem began immediately after a graphics, storage, chipset, or security-related driver change.

- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- If the problem began after an update, select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Otherwise, select Update Driver and use the manufacturer’s official source.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Avoid driver websites that bundle installers or offer unrelated DLL downloads. Hunting through dozens of driver versions can make the original problem harder to diagnose. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it finds; driver installation is completed with the full version. It is optional, and a driver change is not the definitive fix when the affected application itself is damaged.
Fix 8: Check the disk and file system
Repeated repair failures can indicate storage or file-system corruption.
First back up important files. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk /scan
- Wait for the scan to finish.
- Follow any instructions it provides.
- Restart Windows and repeat DISM and SFC if errors were found.
Use this command only when offline repair is appropriate or Windows requests a restart:
chkdsk /f C:
Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. If the drive is failing or repeatedly reports errors, prioritize data backup and storage replacement rather than repeatedly restoring system files.
Fix 9: Use recovery options if DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows
If the problem started after a known system change, System Restore may be appropriate.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete the restore.
If no restore point exists, or if repairs repeatedly fail, use Windows recovery options. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options include repair and reset paths.

If DISM reports that source files cannot be found
Windows Update may itself be damaged. Microsoft supports using a matching repair source with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a real Windows repair source. The source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build. An arbitrary Windows folder from another computer is not a safe substitute.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not for winsta.dll.
Visual C++ Redistributables provide C and C++ runtime libraries. They do not normally provide this Windows system DLL. Reinstall Visual C++ only if the same application separately reports files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable downloads should be used for that separate problem, and the package architecture must match the application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Older Visual C++ packages can remain installed side by side. Installing the latest package does not repair a corrupted Windows system component.
DirectX and .NET should be repaired only when the application reports a DirectX or .NET-specific error. Installing unrelated runtimes will not replace a damaged winsta.dll.

Should you run regsvr32?
No, not as a general repair step.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its behavior in the regsvr32 command reference.
There is no evidence that winsta.dll is a self-registering COM DLL. Running:

That message does not mean you need a different download. It means registration is not the applicable repair method.
When is manual replacement justified?
Manual replacement is an advanced fallback, not the first fix. Consider it only when:
- SFC identifies the exact damaged file.
- DISM and Windows Update repair methods fail.
- You have a known-good copy from the same Windows build and architecture, or official installation media.
- You understand that ownership and permissions may also need repair.
Never use a random DLL-sharing site. If manual replacement becomes necessary, use official Microsoft installation media or follow Microsoft’s documented advanced system-file replacement process. In most cases, an in-place Windows repair is safer than guessing at a standalone file.
Frequently asked questions
Is winsta.dll genuine or malware?
The legitimate winsta.dll is a Microsoft Windows component signed by Microsoft and normally located in the Windows system directories. A file with the same name outside those directories is not automatically genuine. Check its path and digital signature, then scan the system if malware is suspected.
Is winsta.dll supplied by Windows or by my application?
It is supplied by Microsoft Windows. An application may depend on it, but the application normally should not provide the Windows copy.
Can I download winsta.dll separately?
Do not download it from random DLL websites. The file may be malicious, corrupted, incompatible with your Windows build, or the wrong architecture. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, or use official Windows recovery media.
Does the application need the System32 or SysWOW64 copy?
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit applications normally use the native copy in System32, while 32-bit applications normally use the compatible copy in SysWOW64. Windows redirection normally handles this automatically.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. Reinstall Visual C++ only when the application also reports missing Visual C++ runtime files. winsta.dll belongs to Windows.
What if SFC cannot repair the file?
Review the CBS log, run DISM before SFC again, check the disk with chkdsk /scan, and use a matching repair source if DISM cannot find source files. If repairs still fail, use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
What if the error affects only one game or application?
Use that program’s official Repair, Verify, or reinstall option. A one-application failure usually points toward application damage, even though the missing component is supplied by Windows.
Should I register winsta.dll?
No. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command, and winsta.dll is not established as a self-registering COM DLL.
