wkcallng.dll Missing on Windows: Restore Microsoft Works Calendar

Before changing Windows files, answer these questions:

  • Which program shows the error? It should be Microsoft Works or Works Calendar. If another program reports wkcallng.dll, note its name because the file belongs to Works.
  • When does it happen? Does the message appear when opening Works, launching Calendar, opening a calendar document, or starting Windows?
  • Is Microsoft Works still installed? Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10.
  • Is your Windows installation 32-bit or 64-bit? Go to Settings > System > About and check System type. This helps explain compatibility, but it does not tell you to download a 64-bit replacement DLL.
  • Was the problem preceded by antivirus quarantine, Works removal, Office removal, or a failed update? That history can identify the cause.

wkcallng.dll is the Microsoft® Works Calendar Resources file, associated most strongly with Microsoft Works 7.0. It is an application resource DLL, not a Windows system file, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or hardware-driver file.

The safest repair is to restore the original Microsoft Works installation from its legitimate installation media. Do not begin by downloading a standalone DLL or copying one into C:WindowsSystem32.

What the wkcallng.dll error means

You may see wording such as:

  • “The program can’t start because wkcallng.dll was not found.”
  • “The file wkcallng.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “Error loading wkcallng.dll.”
  • “Failed to load wkcallng.dll.”

These are common DLL-index descriptions rather than a single verified Microsoft diagnostic message. Microsoft’s archived Works support guidance describes the underlying Calendar problem in clearer terms: Works cannot access files required to run Calendar because files may have been renamed, deleted, moved, or damaged.

The file normally belongs inside the Microsoft Works program directory. Its exact location varies by Works release, installation language, and whether the program is running on 32-bit Windows or under WOW64 on 64-bit Windows. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.

Works Calendar also depends on other Works files and libraries. A missing wkcallng.dll message can therefore indicate a damaged or incomplete Works installation rather than a problem with this one file alone.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Microsoft Works

This is the most likely solution when Works is still installed but Calendar will not open.

Check for a repair option

  1. Close Microsoft Works.
  2. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
  5. Find Microsoft Works.
  6. Select the three-dot menu in Windows 11, or select the program and choose Advanced options if available.
  7. Look for Repair, Modify, or Change.
  8. Follow the installer instructions.
  9. Restart Windows.
  10. Open Works Calendar and test it.

Many older desktop programs do not expose a modern Repair button. If no repair option appears, open Control Panel:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Microsoft Works.
  5. Look for Repair, Change, or Uninstall/Change.
  6. Choose the repair option if the Works installer provides one.

Do not remove Works yet if you have important calendar data and no installation media. Back up your Works documents and calendar files first.

Reinstall from original media

If repair is unavailable or fails:

  1. Locate the original Works CD, licensed installer, or trusted installation backup.
  2. Back up your Works documents and calendar data.
  3. In Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Microsoft Works.
  4. Choose Uninstall only after confirming that you can reinstall it.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Run the original Works installer.
  7. Install the same Works edition and language as before.
  8. Restart Windows again.
  9. Open Works Calendar.

Use the same release whenever possible. A wkcallng.dll file from Works 7.0, Works 8.0, Works 9, or a Works Suite installation should not be treated as interchangeable merely because the filename matches.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if Works Calendar opens without the missing-file message and your existing calendar data loads normally. If Works opens but Calendar still fails, the problem may involve a damaged Calendar data file or another Works library. Continue with the backup and data checks below rather than copying a replacement DLL.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may have quarantined a file from an old application, although the available evidence does not establish that this is a common cause.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an entry involving Microsoft Works or wkcallng.dll.
  5. Read the detection details carefully.

Restore the file only when all of the following are true:

  • The file came from your original, legitimate Works installation.
  • You recognize the Works installation and its location.
  • The security detection is clearly a false positive.
  • You have scanned the system and do not see signs of unauthorized modification.

If the file came from an unknown archive, do not restore it. Reinstall Works from original media instead. If you restore a quarantined file, restart Works and run another security scan.

If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file after reinstalling Works, do not keep adding exclusions. Preserve your documents, perform a full or offline security scan, and confirm that the Works installer itself is trustworthy.

Fix 3: Confirm the Works installation path and version

Do not use a random copy of wkcallng.dll simply because Windows says the file is missing. The correct file must match the Works release, language, architecture, and installation layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect the installed program:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Microsoft Works.
  3. Select its menu and choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, if available.
  4. If no useful details appear, open Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  5. Check the Works edition shown there.
  6. Look for the original CD or installer documentation to confirm the release.

You can also search the Works directory:

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. Search for wkcallng.dll.
  4. If a result appears, right-click it and select Open file location.
  5. Confirm that it is inside a Microsoft Works directory rather than a random download folder or Windows system directory.
  6. Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Details tab.

File properties can help identify a file, but they do not prove that an unknown copy is safe or compatible. Do not rely on a reported file size, version, hash, or path without identifying the exact Works edition.

Fix 4: Restore Works Calendar data carefully

A damaged Calendar data file or related Works library can produce a Calendar startup failure that looks like a missing DLL problem.

Before changing anything, make a backup:

  1. Close Works completely.
  2. Press Windows key + E.
  3. Search for your Works calendar files and documents.
  4. Copy the results to another folder, external drive, or approved backup location.
  5. Do not overwrite the only copy.

Microsoft’s archived Works material refers to Calendar-related files including Mswkscal.wcd, wkcalac.dll, and wkcalctl.dll. The exact names and locations can vary, so do not delete or rename these files as a first experiment.

After backing up the data, run the Works repair or reinstall process. This is safer than replacing individual files because the installer can restore the related Calendar components together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Works starts after reinstalling but a particular calendar document still fails, the document may be damaged. Test a new blank calendar. If the blank calendar works, restore data from your backup in small groups rather than replacing the entire Calendar data folder at once.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is also affected

wkcallng.dll is normally a third-party application file, so Windows System File Checker is unlikely to restore it. Use Windows repair commands when other Windows applications are failing, Windows reports system corruption, or the Works problem began with broader operating-system damage.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test Works.

These commands repair Windows components, not normally a missing Works DLL. If they report that files were repaired, test other Windows functions as well. If Works alone remains broken, return to the Works repair or reinstall procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating SFC and DISM without checking what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it finds, while repairs through its full version are optional; for this file, reinstalling Microsoft Works remains the definitive fix.

Use the Windows 11 repair reinstall only as a last resort

On supported Windows 11 systems:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. It is not a replacement for reinstalling Microsoft Works and should not be the first response to a Works-only error.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX controls and COM components. A Works Calendar resource DLL is not normally that type of component.

Do not treat this as a general repair:

regsvr32 wkcallng.dll

Running it may produce an error about a missing registration entry point. That result does not prove that the DLL is defective. It usually means the command is inappropriate for the file.

Fix 7: Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes or drivers

Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, and hardware drivers do not supply Microsoft Works Calendar Resources. Reinstalling them is unlikely to restore wkcallng.dll.

When Device Manager is relevant

Use Device Manager only if you have a separate hardware problem, such as a display, printer, storage, or audio device failing at the same time:

  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

Do not install a driver because it appears to mention a DLL. A driver update cannot normally repair a missing Works Calendar resource.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finding which of dozens of drivers is stale can take time and may not explain a Works-only error. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates, with installation through its full version optional; updating drivers is not a substitute for reinstalling Microsoft Works when that is the only affected application.

Why Windows Features will not fix Works

Windows Features controls built-in components such as .NET Framework features, legacy media components, and virtualization options. To open it:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Review the available Windows components.

Do not enable random features to resolve wkcallng.dll. Unless another program specifically requires a listed Windows component, leave these settings unchanged.

Fix 8: Use System Restore only after a known change

System Restore can help if Works worked recently and the failure began immediately after a known software change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Back up Works documents before continuing.
  8. Confirm the restore.

System Restore does not replace a missing Works installer and may not restore application data. If no suitable restore point exists, cancel the wizard and reinstall Works from legitimate media instead.

Why downloading wkcallng.dll is risky

Random DLL download sites can provide:

  • A file from the wrong Works release.
  • The wrong language or architecture.
  • A modified or malicious file.
  • A file that creates a new dependency or entry-point error.
  • A copy that hides the damaged Works installation without repairing it.

Never copy an unknown wkcallng.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Works directory. A 32-bit Works program can run on 64-bit Windows through WOW64, but that does not make a 64-bit replacement DLL suitable.

The safe sources are your original Microsoft Works CD, a licensed Works installer you already possess, or an existing trusted backup of that installation. Microsoft no longer provides a current Works redistributable that can be used as a modern replacement package.

Frequently asked questions

Is wkcallng.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is associated with Microsoft Works Calendar and is normally installed with the Works application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program installed wkcallng.dll?

The strongest public association is Microsoft Works 7.0. Other Works-family releases may also use the filename, so verify the edition from your installation media or file properties.

Should I put wkcallng.dll in System32?

No. It normally belongs in the Microsoft Works program directory. Copying it to a system directory can create version conflicts and does not repair Works.

Will SFC restore wkcallng.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while wkcallng.dll is normally an application file. Run SFC when Windows itself appears damaged, then repair Works separately.

Will regsvr32 fix the error?

Normally no. The file is a Works Calendar resource DLL, not normally a registerable COM or ActiveX component.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Microsoft Works is no longer installed?

A stray wkcallng.dll error may come from a broken shortcut, an incomplete uninstall, or another old Works component. Remove the leftover program entry if appropriate, or reinstall Works from trusted media if you still need its documents. If Works is unavailable, focus on recovering your files and moving them to a supported application.

What if reinstalling Works does not help?

Check antivirus quarantine, confirm that the same Works edition and language were installed, test a new Calendar file, and inspect whether other Works Calendar files are damaged. If other Windows programs also fail, run DISM and SFC. Do not replace the DLL with an unrelated download.
