Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemswinsyncproviders.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the Windows Synchronization Provider Framework. If winsyncproviders.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows and the application that reports the error rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The file supports Windows synchronization providers used for data such as contacts and portable-device information. It is associated with Windows synchronization architecture introduced with Windows 7, but the exact file version depends on your Windows build, servicing level, architecture, and installation source.
Before you repair anything
Write down:
- The exact error message
- The application or game that displays it
- Whether every program fails or only one
- Whether the problem began after a Windows update, application update, or antivirus alert
- The path shown for
winsyncproviders.dll, if one appears
Common loader messages include:
- “The program can’t start because winsyncproviders.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading winsyncproviders.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because winsyncproviders.dll was not found.”
- “winsyncproviders.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named file itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency such as another synchronization DLL, a system API, or a provider used by the affected application.
Fix 1: Repair the affected application first
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If only one program or game reports the error, that program is the most useful place to start. Its installation may be incomplete, its provider files may be damaged, or an update may have left incompatible files behind.

Repair a desktop application
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Find the affected application.
- Right-click it and select Repair, Change, or Modify, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If no repair option is available:
- Open the application’s official installer or download page.
- Download the installer that matches your Windows architecture and application release.
- Close the affected application.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Choose Repair if offered.
- Otherwise, uninstall the application, restart, and install it again.
For a game, open its launcher and look for Verify files, Repair, or a similar command before reinstalling the entire game. The exact menu depends on the launcher.
Use the developer’s official installer, not a standalone DLL package. The application’s installer can restore its complete set of files and dependencies instead of replacing one file with an unknown version.
Run the application as administrator for testing
This is a diagnostic step, not a permanent repair.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Start the program.
If this changes the result, the application may have a permissions or installation-location problem. Reinstalling it into its normal location with the official installer is safer than permanently running every program with elevated privileges.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and file integrity
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not restore a file solely because its name matches winsyncproviders.dll.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
winsyncproviders.dll. - Check the reported file path and detection details.
- If the file is in a Windows system directory and the installation is trustworthy, review the event carefully before choosing Restore or Allow.
- Update Windows Security and run a Full scan.
A legitimate copy in the Windows directory with a valid Microsoft digital signature is consistent with a genuine Windows component. A copy in a download, temporary, unknown application, or random user directory deserves greater suspicion.
To inspect a file’s signature:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the reported file.
- Right-click
winsyncproviders.dlland choose Properties. - Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to install a DLL from an untrusted source.
Fix 3: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
This is the main repair path when the file is missing from Windows, multiple applications are affected, or the problem began after servicing.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →After restarting, test the affected application. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the repair source that SFC needs. SFC then checks protected Windows files and repairs them when possible.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, continue to the escalation steps below rather than copying a replacement DLL manually.
If you prefer help identifying what changed during repeated scans, Outbyte PC Repair can show problems found by its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that specific program owns the failure.

Use a matching DISM repair source if Windows Update is broken
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a repair source that appropriately matches your installed Windows version. An unrelated or mismatched source can cause further servicing problems.
Fix 4: Check the Windows directory and architecture
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Public file inventories commonly associate the file with:

%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally the 64-bit system directory. The 32-bit system directory is normally:
%windir%SysWOW64
These names are counterintuitive. Do not copy files between the folders based only on their names.
A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit dependencies. A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit dependencies. A known 32-bit or 64-bit file is not interchangeable merely because the filename is identical.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
To check where an application is installed, right-click its shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target. This does not prove the application’s architecture, but it helps identify the correct installation to repair.
Do not replace a file in System32 or `SysWOW64 with a download. DISM and SFC are designed to restore protected Windows components with files appropriate to the installation.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the application’s dependencies
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
winsyncproviders.dll is not established as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, driver, or game middleware component. Reinstalling those packages should not be your default response unless the affected application’s official support instructions specifically identify one.
If the application names a required runtime in its own documentation or installer:

- Visit the application developer’s official support or download page.
- Download the runtime version recommended for that application.
- Install both architectures only when the developer requires them.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or verify the application files again.
Avoid “all-in-one DLL fixer” packages. They can install unrelated, outdated, or incompatible components and obscure the original cause.
Fix 6: Update related drivers only when the symptoms point to hardware
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A driver is not the normal owner of winsyncproviders.dll, but portable-device synchronization errors can sometimes occur alongside device or USB problems. Update drivers only when the affected program fails while connecting to a particular device, or Device Manager reports a problem.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Bluetooth.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the device manufacturer’s official support page. Do not install a driver merely because its name resembles the DLL.
If you are manually checking many hardware entries and want a scan to identify stale drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan finds; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and the device manufacturer’s driver remains the appropriate source when a specific device is involved.
Fix 7: Use Windows recovery when corruption returns
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, or the file disappears again, investigate broader Windows corruption.
First, review the SFC details:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt from the desktop and look for entries involving the synchronization component or another dependency.

Random DLL download sites are unsafe sources for this file. A downloaded copy may contain malware, target a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, have an invalid signature, or fail because another dependency is actually missing.

Likely causes and the right response
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Damaged or missing Windows component | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Incomplete Windows update | Install updates and restart |
| Damaged application installation | Repair, verify, or reinstall that application |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review quarantine, signature, path, and scan results |

| Missing dependency | Identify it from the application or loader diagnostics |
| Broader system corruption | Review CBS logs and use Windows recovery |
No reliable evidence identifies one particular game or installer as the dominant source of this error. The application named in your message is therefore important: if only that application fails, repair it before changing system files.
FAQ
Is winsyncproviders.dll malware?
Not by name alone. A Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows directory is consistent with a genuine Windows component. An unexpected copy should be signature-checked and scanned before it is opened or restored.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Manual copying can create a version, architecture, or signature mismatch and does not repair dependencies. Use Windows servicing or the affected application’s official installer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is winsyncproviders.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
There is no evidence here that it is. It is associated with Windows synchronization-provider infrastructure. Install another runtime only when the application’s official documentation specifically requires it.
Why does Windows say the module could not be found when the file exists?
A dependent DLL or system API may be missing or incompatible. The loader can name winsyncproviders.dll even when another module prevents it from loading.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. Registration is not a substitute for restoring a protected Windows component or repairing an application installation.
What should I do if DISM and SFC both fail?
Save the SFC details, install pending updates, and try a matching repair source. If the issue persists, use Windows recovery or contact the affected application’s vendor with the full error, application name, Windows build, file path, architecture, signature result, and antivirus history.
