wintab32.dll missing errors usually mean that a tablet driver is incomplete, damaged, incompatible, or no longer communicating with the application. Reinstall the driver for the exact tablet model first, then repair the affected application if the error remains.
What this file actually does
wintab32.dll implements the Wintab tablet-input interface. Drawing, CAD, handwriting, signature-capture and other pen-aware applications can use it to receive pen position, pressure and related tablet data.
It is not a general Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file or .NET file. A tablet or OEM driver installs it. Wacom supplies a major Wintab implementation, but equivalent components can also come from Huion, XP-PEN, Microsoft Surface and other tablet manufacturers.
The application may load Wintab dynamically with Windows functions such as LoadLibrary and GetProcAddress. Older software may instead assume that Wintab is always installed and fail at startup even when no tablet is connected.

Do not treat a listed file version such as 4.0.4.0 as a universal or current release. Wintab files are vendor-specific, and the correct build depends on the tablet, driver package, application architecture and Windows architecture.

Fix 1: Cleanly reinstall the tablet driver
This is the most likely fix. Use the tablet manufacturer’s official driver page, not a DLL download site.
Before removing the driver, export or note your tablet preferences if the manufacturer’s software provides that option.
- Disconnect the tablet from the computer.
- Press
Win+R, typeappwiz.cpl, and press Enter. - In Programs and Features, look for entries named Tablet, Wacom Tablet, Bamboo, Huion, XP-PEN, or the tablet manufacturer’s name.
- Select the relevant entry and choose Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the manufacturer’s removal wizard.
- Restart Windows, even if the uninstaller does not require it.
- Download the driver for the exact tablet model and the correct Windows architecture from the manufacturer’s official support page.
- Run the installer as administrator. Right-click it, select Show more options if necessary, then choose Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows again.
- Reconnect the tablet and test the application.
Success means the application starts and pen input or pressure works normally. If the same error appears, do not copy a replacement DLL into a system folder. Continue with the architecture and application checks below.
If Device Manager still shows a failed tablet device, right-click Start, choose Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices and Universal Serial Bus controllers, and look for the tablet or an entry with a warning icon. Right-click the relevant device, choose Uninstall device, select the option to remove driver software only if the manufacturer’s instructions tell you to, restart, and run the official driver installer again.
Do not use Windows Features to add Wintab. Wintab is not an optional Windows feature.
Manually checking every installed driver and matching each one to the tablet model can be tedious, especially after changing brands. Fix 2: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application may require different Wintab binaries. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows normally uses the 32-bit system view through WOW64 redirection.

On 64-bit Windows:
System32is normally the native 64-bit system directory.SysWOW64normally contains 32-bit system binaries used by 32-bit processes.- The directory names do not indicate that
System32contains 32-bit files.
Do not move wintab32.dll between these folders. Do not put an x86 DLL in System32 because a download page labels it “32-bit.” Reinstall the manufacturer’s complete driver package so Windows receives the correct architecture and supporting files.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
To check the application, right-click its shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect the Target path. That does not always reveal architecture, so use the application’s documentation or vendor support information when it matters. Older applications may be 32-bit even on current 64-bit Windows.
A copy of wintab32.dll in the application’s own folder may be an application-private version. Windows normally searches the application directory before system locations. Replacing that copy can change the program’s behavior or create a DLL-loading security problem. Leave it alone unless the application vendor supplies a matching, signed replacement and documents the destination.
Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If only one program fails after the tablet driver has been reinstalled, repair that program rather than repeatedly replacing Wintab.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Advanced options.
- Choose Repair.
- Start the application again.
For classic desktop software:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Complete the installer and restart Windows if requested.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the application, restart, download a fresh installer from its developer, and reinstall it. This is particularly important if the program bundles or expects a private Wintab component.
For a game, use the launcher’s file-repair function. In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, select the three dots beside the game, choose Manage, and select Verify. The launcher should compare damaged or missing files and download replacements. Other launchers use similar Verify, Repair or Scan commands.

If the game or application is statically linked to Wintab, it may fail even when no tablet is attached. In that case, changing tablet settings will not help until the application itself is repaired or updated.

Windows Security may have removed a driver file after an update or scan.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security, then Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Inspect recent detections for the tablet driver or
wintab32.dll.
Restore a quarantined file only when you can confirm that it came from the trusted tablet manufacturer’s installer and has a valid digital signature. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. If the source is uncertain, leave it quarantined, run a malware scan, and reinstall the driver from the official vendor source.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined, do not permanently disable antivirus protection. Obtain a fresh installer and contact the tablet manufacturer if the signed driver continues to trigger detections.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several unrelated applications report missing or damaged DLLs, or when Windows itself shows broader corruption. They do not normally restore a third-party tablet-driver DLL.

- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. If SFC reports that it found corrupt files it could not repair, restart and run the commands again, then repair the tablet driver rather than treating SFC as a replacement for it.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing whether Windows components are actually damaged can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues, but its free scan identifies problems and the full version performs repairs; it is not required, and reinstalling the tablet driver or affected application remains the definitive fix for a vendor-owned Wintab file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known recent change
If the failure began immediately after a driver or application update and an appropriate restore point exists:

rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Choose Next.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings and installed programs. It normally does not change personal files. Afterward, install the correct tablet driver from the manufacturer’s official source instead of restoring a random DLL.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for installing or repairing any DLL.
Wintab applications load the interface dynamically, and the documented Wintab loading model does not establish a COM registration requirement. Therefore, this is normally the wrong command:
regsvr32 wintab32.dll
Use it only if the tablet or application vendor explicitly instructs you to register its particular DLL. Otherwise, an error from regsvr32 does not diagnose the real problem and may distract from the damaged driver or application.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download wintab32.dll from a random DLL repository and copy it into System32, SysWOW64 or the application’s directory. The file may contain malware, may be the wrong vendor build or architecture, may lack required dependencies, and often leaves the damaged driver installation unresolved.

Use the tablet manufacturer’s official driver installer, the application’s official installer or launcher repair, and Microsoft repair tools for Windows components. A manual replacement is acceptable only when the vendor explicitly provides a matching, digitally signed file and documents exactly where it belongs.
If the error continues
Record these details before contacting support:
- The exact application and full path shown in the error
- Windows edition, version and architecture
- Tablet model and manufacturer
- Installed tablet-driver version
- Whether the tablet works in another application
- Whether the DLL is missing or present
- Whether the problem affects every Windows account or only one
- Any recent driver, application, antivirus or Windows change
If only one user profile fails, test the application from a new Windows profile. A profile-specific configuration or permission problem is then more likely than a system-wide missing file.

If the file exists but Windows reports that the specified module cannot be found, a dependency of wintab32.dll may be missing. Reinstall the complete driver and inspect the vendor or application logs rather than replacing the DLL again. Escalate to the tablet manufacturer when the driver is correct, and to the application developer when only one program still fails.
FAQ
Is wintab32.dll part of Windows?
Generally, no. It is supplied by a tablet or OEM driver package. Microsoft driver archives can contain Wintab packages for particular hardware, but there is no universal Microsoft Wintab redistributable.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX or .NET?
Normally, no. Those packages do not supply the Wintab tablet interface. Install them only when the affected application separately reports that one of those runtimes is missing.
Can I fix the error by connecting the tablet?
Connecting the tablet may help only when the driver is already installed and the application merely needs the device. A missing or corrupt Wintab component requires a driver repair or reinstall.
Should I copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may use a different tablet vendor, driver revision, Windows architecture or application-local build. Use the official driver installer instead.
Why does a 32-bit file involve System32 and SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, WOW64 redirects 32-bit processes to the appropriate 32-bit system locations. Directory names alone are not a safe way to choose a DLL. The installer should place and expose the correct component automatically.
What if the application worked before a Windows update?
The timing is useful evidence, but it does not prove that Windows Update universally caused the failure. Check the tablet driver, application files, architecture and antivirus history first. Use System Restore only when a suitable restore point exists.
