To get the Sandstone Pickaxe in Winter Burrow, progress through Aunty’s early lessons until the Owl takes her, then cross the bridge beyond her house and bring Bufo 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs. He gives you the pickaxe directly. The later Granite Pickaxe is crafted at the burrow workbench after you complete Bufo’s “An Axe for Bufo” quest and gather 1 Granite, 1 Wool Yarn, 1 Pinewood, and 1 Oak Wood. You can pick up the first Granite from the ground by hand, so you do not need to break a Granite boulder to unlock the upgrade.
How do you get the first Pickaxe?
- Complete Aunty’s early cooking and crafting lessons, returning to her when the tutorial asks you to.
- After the Owl takes Aunty, pass her house, cross the bridge, and follow the path to Bufo’s home and stone bench. A fire pit along the route can be used as a warmth stop.
- Talk to Bufo until his request is active, then bring him 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs. He rewards you with the Sandstone Pickaxe; you do not craft this first tool at your home workbench.
If Bufo is not there, continue Aunty’s requested lessons and advance to the Owl event. If the Pebble and Twig counters have not appeared, finish Bufo’s dialogue until the request starts.
What does the Sandstone Pickaxe break?
Use the Sandstone Pickaxe on basic rocks and early blockages. A dark blue-grey Granite boulder that does not respond is a higher-tier target, not evidence that your first pickaxe is broken. The available guides distinguish basic rocks from Granite boulders, but do not provide mining-speed or durability figures.
Where do you find the first Granite?
Look for small, loose blue-grey Granite chunks on the ground and pick one up by hand. The Granite location guide points to the route between Aunty and Bufo and the area north of the burrow around Moss and water edges as places to search. Loose pickups are different from the darker mineable boulders: you can collect the ingredient for the upgrade without using a Granite Pickaxe.

How do you unlock and craft the Granite Pickaxe?
- Progress through the rescue and early Gnawtusk stash sequence described in Bufo’s later quest, “An Axe for Bufo.”
- After the recipe unlocks, gather 1 Granite, 1 Wool Yarn, 1 Pinewood, and 1 Oak Wood.
- Go to the burrow workbench and craft the Granite Pickaxe. Seeing the recipe in your handbook means it is unlocked; it does not mean the tool has already been crafted.
Which pickaxe should you use?
| Tool | How you get it | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Sandstone Pickaxe | Give Bufo 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs after the Owl event; he gives it to you directly. | Basic rocks and early blockages. |
| Granite Pickaxe | Unlock its recipe through “An Axe for Bufo,” then craft it at the burrow workbench with 1 Granite, 1 Wool Yarn, 1 Pinewood, and 1 Oak Wood. | Granite boulders. |
Why will the boulder not break?
- It is a dark blue-grey Granite boulder: the Sandstone Pickaxe is the wrong tier; get the Granite Pickaxe first.
- You cannot find Granite for the recipe: search for a small loose chunk and collect it by hand instead of striking boulders.
- The Granite recipe is listed, but you have no tool: gather every listed ingredient and craft it at the burrow workbench.
- Bufo is missing or has no request counters: advance Aunty’s tutorial through the Owl event, then continue Bufo’s dialogue until the request is active.
