Wordle is a daily word puzzle in which you try to guess a five-letter mystery word in six attempts. Josh Wardle released it publicly in October 2021; after its rapid rise, The New York Times Company announced it had acquired the game on January 31, 2022. Its early popularity is well documented, but those headline audience figures describe that moment—not Wordle’s current player count.
What is Wordle?
Wordle is a short, once-a-day digital puzzle built around a five-letter word. You enter a guess, receive color-coded feedback about the letters, and use that information to make another guess. The goal is to identify the mystery word within six tries.
The New York Times Company described the format in its acquisition announcement as a game that gives players “six tries to guess a five-letter mystery word.” A 2023 preprint by James P. Dilger also describes the feedback as indicating whether guessed letters are correct and in the correct position. The sources cited here do not establish the current official meaning of each individual color, so this guide does not assign one.
How do you play?
- Enter a five-letter guess. Start with a word that fits the game’s five-letter format.
- Read the feedback. After the guess, the game provides color-coded information about your letters and their positions.
- Use what you learned. Make another five-letter guess, applying the feedback from earlier attempts.
- Solve it within six tries. The puzzle ends when you identify the word or use all six guesses.
The digital game is organized around a daily puzzle. That differs from the tabletop party version, which is designed for repeated rounds with a group.

Who created Wordle, and how did it become so popular?
Josh Wardle released Wordle publicly in October 2021. The growth reported in the months that followed was striking: TechCrunch reported that 90 people played on November 1, 2021; two months later it had reached 300,000 users; and by the acquisition announcement in January 2022 it had millions of daily players. These are contemporaneous figures reported around the deal, not a current audience estimate.
Wordle’s concise daily format made it easy to fit into a routine, while its guess-and-feedback structure gave players a small, shared challenge. Players could compare their results with others, a feature that helped make the puzzle social. The documented growth shows how quickly it caught on, but does not establish a single cause for its popularity.

Did The New York Times buy Wordle?
Yes. The New York Times Company announced the acquisition on January 31, 2022. Josh Wardle said, “I am incredibly pleased to announce that I’ve reached an agreement with The New York Times for them to take over running Wordle going forward.” The Times said Wordle would join its portfolio of daily puzzle games.
The announcement said the game would remain free for new and existing players “for the time being” and that no gameplay changes would be made as it moved to The New York Times. That was the company’s stated position in 2022, not a promise that every access condition would remain unchanged indefinitely.

What Wordle features does the NYT Games app offer?
The New York Times Games app help page says players can view Wordle statistics and streaks. It also describes friend leaderboards that track daily guess counts. These are app-specific details; they should not be assumed to apply identically to every browser, account, or location.
Rank #4
The help page says games and archives are available in the app’s Games tab, while non-subscribers and people whose subscriptions do not include Games have limited access. Because access terms can change, check the current help information for your account and platform before relying on a particular feature.
Is there a physical Wordle game?
Yes. Hasbro and NYT Games announced Wordle: The Party Game on July 14, 2022, with North American availability planned for October 2022. It is an optional group-play adaptation, not a requirement for playing the digital daily puzzle.
Best Value
In the tabletop game, a host writes the secret word and other players try to guess it in six attempts. The announced package includes reusable dry-erase boards and markers, and the release lists four modes: classic, fast, timed, and team. It is listed for ages 14 and up. The announcement establishes the product and its features, but not current price, stock, or seller availability.

| Digital Wordle | A daily puzzle for individual solving | App statistics and streaks; the NYT Games app also offers friend leaderboards tracking daily guess counts |
| Wordle: The Party Game | A host sets the word for a group round; players compete using reusable boards and markers | Face-to-face play, with classic, fast, timed, and team modes |
What does Wordle research say about solving it in one guess?
A 2023 preprint by James P. Dilger analyzed first-guess data the author compiled from May through August 2023. It reports that about 0.2–0.5% of players in the sample solved the puzzle in one attempt. The paper compares that with a 0.043% probability for a random guess when choosing from 2,315 possible target words.
Dilger interprets the difference as evidence of possible cheating. That is the author’s interpretation of a particular sample, not an official New York Times measurement or proof that any specific player cheated.
