If Wirecast starts dropping frames during a long YouTube stream, do not assume the stream has simply been running too long. Note when the problem begins, then compare Wirecast’s output frame rate and CPU use with upload capacity, packet loss, and YouTube’s Live Control Room status. Those signals help distinguish local rendering or encoding load from network and destination problems.
Capture what changes when the drops begin
Record the time the symptom starts and whether it returns. Compare the stream’s early performance with its condition at the time of degradation; elapsed time alone is not an established cause of Wirecast frame drops.
- In Wirecast, watch output FPS against the target, system CPU use, output data rate, and any connection or queue indicator available in your installed version.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check stream status and read any specific health messages. These provide an ingest-side clue that is separate from Wirecast’s local indicators.
- Note whether the source or preview stutters, Wirecast’s output FPS falls, the output connection degrades, or only viewers report poor playback.
Telestream notes that viewers may fail to decode a stream even when sender bandwidth and capacity appear adequate. Viewer stutter alone therefore does not prove that Wirecast is dropping frames.
Check whether Wirecast is under local encoding load
Telestream advises keeping system CPU below 60% while streaming and says sustained use above 60% raises the likelihood of dropped frames. This is vendor guidance, not a universal hardware threshold: look for a CPU rise that coincides with the FPS drop.

Reduce load one change at a time
- Record the current CPU use and output FPS under the scene that is causing trouble.
- Try reducing the canvas or output resolution; Telestream’s FAQ gives 1280×720 as an example. Alternatively, select a lower-resolution encoding preset or reduce frame rate.
- If available in your installed release, try disabling “Live GPU Accelerated Icons.” Menu labels can vary by Wirecast version.
- Retest the same scene and compare CPU and FPS. If the output recovers after a resolution or frame-rate reduction, that points toward rendering or encoding load.
Telestream warns that higher frame rates increase both CPU use and bitrate demand. Avoid changing several settings at once, so you can tell which change affected the result.
Measure upload capacity and packet loss during the problem
Adequate upload speed and reliable connectivity are separate from CPU headroom. Run an upload speed test and check packet loss while investigating; a test taken at a different time may not reflect conditions during the drop. Include all active output destinations, including any backup output, when totaling configured bitrates.

The recommendations differ by context. Telestream’s Wirecast 16 User Guide says combined destination encoder settings should be no more than half the tested upload speed and says to keep packet loss at 0%. YouTube separately recommends 20% room beyond the primary plus backup bitrate. These are distinct vendor recommendations, not one universal threshold.
If capacity is short or variable
- Lower the stream bitrate and, if needed, reduce frame size or frame rate; then observe the same Wirecast and YouTube indicators.
- Where feasible, compare a wired Ethernet connection with Wi-Fi. This is a practical way to investigate connection reliability, not a cable-specific guaranteed fix.
- Consider whether other users or services share the connection. YouTube warns that a shared office network can restrict the bandwidth available to an individual streamer.
Separate a destination-path problem from a local problem
Telestream recommends testing to a test server. If Wirecast stays continuously green to that test destination but performs poorly at the regular destination, Telestream says the problem probably lies with the destination server and advises contacting the CDN host. For a YouTube stream, compare that result with the Live Control Room’s status messages.

A clean test-server result does not by itself prove YouTube is at fault; it narrows the likely issue to the destination path or service. Keep the test result, the time of the drop, and YouTube’s health messages together when escalating the issue.
Verify the YouTube ingest settings
Check that the encoder is configured for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current table for the exact combination you use.

For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include 5–14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6–17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are ranges, not a diagnosis of a specific drop; bandwidth headroom and the other active destinations still matter. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
Before a broadcast, test with representative audio and motion and monitor stream health during the event. If YouTube reports an ingest warning, follow the specific message and check codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval. For active-connection timeout or SSL errors, the available evidence here does not establish detailed protocol-specific steps, so use the error message and current YouTube guidance rather than guessing at a fix.

Interpret a late-onset issue without blaming runtime alone
The reviewed guidance does not establish a Wirecast defect specific to long YouTube broadcasts or a rule that stream duration itself causes dropped frames. Compare CPU, FPS, bitrate, packet loss, and YouTube health at the start and at the time performance worsens; pursue the branch that changes with the symptom rather than replacing hardware or changing codecs without supporting evidence.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive limit, not a dropped-frame threshold. If you are also making a local recording or preserving a copy, check that it is progressing, but do not treat archive behavior as evidence about Wirecast’s output performance.
