The slate is an ordinary playlist item—not a dedicated slate feature.
Create a playlist

In a layer, click +, choose Shots, select New Playlist Shot, and click Add. Wirecast adds a Playlist Shot with a playlist badge and duration.

Add the videos by dragging clips or shots onto the Playlist Shot. Alternatively, double-click the Playlist Shot to open the Playlist tab, then choose Shots > New Shot.
Insert and time the slate
Choose an image or media shot
Prepare the slate as an image or media shot and add it to the playlist between the relevant video shots. Wirecast playlist content can include videos, images, audio, and live shots; there is no separate slate item documented for this workflow. Use a still image for a static card, or a short media clip if the interstitial needs motion or audio.

Set a finite duration

In the playlist, right-click the slate item and choose Modify Duration.

Enter how long it should display and click OK. Choose a duration that gives viewers enough time to read the slate; Wirecast does not prescribe a particular length.

A finite duration lets the playlist advance from the slate to the next item. Avoid Apply to All unless you intend to change the duration of every playlist item. The Wirecast 16 guide says clips need an assigned duration, while live sources default to infinite duration.
Show the playlist countdown

Start the playlist in the Live Broadcast Area.

Click the counter gear icon beneath that area and choose New Playlist – Completion. This mode shows both the current shot countdown and the playlist countdown.

To show only the current shot countdown, select the current shot name instead.
Limitations and version notes

Do not delete shots while the playlist is running.

Wirecast does not support nested playlists.

These playlist instructions are for Wirecast 16. Telestream’s version history lists Wirecast 16.5.3 as released June 10, 2026, and includes fixes involving countdown-clock and media-playback behavior. If a timer or playback control behaves differently in your installation, check its version and the release notes for that version.
