That signal-path check separates a source or encoder problem from a delivery or playback problem without assuming one cause.
Find the first point where the video goes black
Check the same moment in the production at four checkpoints. Record whether audio continues, whether the problem affects every video source or just one media item, and whether viewers on separate devices see the same thing.
- Wirecast: Inspect the media source and the program output being sent to YouTube. Is the source loaded, selected, active, and visible in the output?
- Local recording: If Wirecast is making an archive, play the relevant section. Does it show the same black picture?
- YouTube Live Control Room: Compare its preview with Wirecast and check stream-health messages.
- Public watch page: Test the stream on another browser or device, ideally on another network.
YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the picture and sound directly in the encoder. If the encoder output is bad, investigate routed sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive. If the local output looks healthy, shift attention to the outbound connection, YouTube’s preview and health information, and viewer playback. This is a diagnostic branch, not a confirmed Wirecast-specific root cause.
If Wirecast preview or the local recording is black
Check the media source and output route
- Confirm the intended media file or source is loaded and selected, then verify it is active and routed to the program output sent to YouTube.
- Check whether other video sources appear correctly. If only one clip fails, test a known-good clip to see whether the issue is limited to that asset.
- Compare Wirecast’s preview and program output with the local recording. Note where they first diverge.
A known-good clip is a practical isolation test; it does not establish that a particular codec or file defect is responsible. If you suspect a Wirecast-specific format or setting, consult current Telestream documentation or support rather than relying on legacy instructions. A Wirecast for YouTube guide surfaced in older material is about 13 years old and does not verify present-day controls.

Check encoder condition and system load
Look for encoder error indicators and check CPU load while the media plays. YouTube identifies routed video sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive as useful checks when encoder output looks wrong. If available, update Wirecast to a current release and retest with a controlled stream.
If Wirecast and the archive look good but YouTube is black
Compare YouTube preview and stream health
Check Live Control Room’s preview and health messages against the same moment in Wirecast and the archive. If the preview is black too, investigate the encoder output and connection to YouTube. If the preview is clear but the public player is not, test playback from another device and network before changing encoder settings.

Check whether the fault is shared by viewers
If viewers on different connections report the same black picture while your local output remains healthy, prioritize the encoder/output path and YouTube delivery checks. If only one viewer or device is affected, use the browser/player branch below. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance points to a possible encoder issue when many viewers experience the problem; it does not make that diagnosis certain.
Do not reset or rotate your stream key just because video is black. YouTube’s stream-key reset advice applies to a different symptom: trouble starting the encoder.

If only one browser or device shows a blank or green player
Try another browser or device and follow YouTube’s playback troubleshooting. For the specific case of a green YouTube video with audible sound, YouTube recommends trying another browser, turning off hardware acceleration in Chrome, and updating the graphics driver. These are viewer-side checks; they are not established fixes for Wirecast media playback or a black outgoing stream.
Test before the next broadcast
- Run an unlisted or otherwise controlled test using audio and moving video similar to the planned program.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor stream health and audio/video during the test.
- Verify the public watch page on another device, including mobile playback.
- Confirm the local archive is growing and can be played back.
- Leave upload capacity above the combined stream bitrate. YouTube Help’s “Streaming tips” recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; this is guidance, not a guarantee against black video.
YouTube Help puts it plainly: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.”
