1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a wired headset if you want audio over a cable without relying on a wireless audio link or keeping a headset battery charged. Choose a wireless headset if avoiding the audio cable during play matters more; it will need power, and it may or may not support wired playback or wireless charging. One distinction matters up front: wireless audio is not the same as wireless charging. Most of the practical differences depend on the exact headset and the device you play on.
What “wireless charging” means for a gaming headset
Wireless charging means power reaches the headset without a charging cable, typically by placing a compatible headset on a charging base. Wireless audio means sound reaches the headset without an audio cable. A headset can provide wireless audio but charge only through USB; it can also offer a wired audio mode while still requiring cable-based charging.
Qi charging is a model-specific feature, not a standard feature of wireless gaming headsets. HyperX documents Qi charging for the Cloud Flight S: place its left earcup on a Qi charging base. HyperX also documents USB charging for that headset. Check both the exact headset model and charger compatibility before buying a pad; the instructions do not establish that any particular third-party base will work. HyperX: Cloud Flight S charging instructions.
How wired and wireless audio differ in use
Wired audio
A wired audio connection avoids depending on the headset’s wireless audio link and does not require that link to be powered. But “wired” can mean different things: 3.5 mm analog audio and USB audio are not interchangeable, and the headset’s controls, microphone, or other functions may behave differently depending on the connection and device.

A 3.5 mm cable also does not guarantee that every wireless headset keeps its wireless features active. SteelSeries says some models turn off wireless functionality when an analog cable is plugged in, in part to save battery. Treat this as model-dependent behavior and check the headset’s instructions rather than assuming the cable preserves every feature. SteelSeries: why some headsets power off wireless functions with a 3.5 mm cable.
Wireless audio
Wireless audio removes the audio cable during play, but the headset needs power for its wireless connection. How it connects—such as Bluetooth or a dedicated wireless transmitter—varies by model, as do supported platforms and chat features. Check the specific headset’s connection options against your PC, console, handheld, or mobile device before choosing it.

Can you use a wireless headset while it charges?
Some models support simultaneous charging and play; others may not. SteelSeries says the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless can be used while charging over USB-C. Its support guidance says PC features remain active, while console functionality may vary slightly. SteelSeries specifies about three hours for a full charge and says a 15-minute charge provides up to six hours of playtime; these are manufacturer figures for this model, not general expectations for wireless headsets. SteelSeries: using the Arctis Nova 3 Wireless while charging.
Do not assume that plugging in a charging cable also provides wired audio, or that plugging in an audio cable will charge the headset. Those are separate functions. Check the model’s supported connections and whether it can play while charging.

Can a wireless gaming headset work as a wired headset?
Some can, but compatibility and functionality depend on the model, cable, and device. For example, SteelSeries documents 3.5 mm wired use for the Arctis 7P with a Nintendo Switch in handheld or tablet mode and with mobile devices. The headset does not need to be powered on for this wired use. In Switch handheld mode, wireless audio is not supported; microphone support depends on the device and app. SteelSeries: Arctis 7P setup for Switch and mobile.
Before relying on a wireless headset as a wired backup, verify the supported cable and whether the wired mode works when the battery is depleted. The Arctis 7P guidance establishes that its 3.5 mm mode does not require the headset to be powered on, but that behavior should not be generalized to other models.

Which connection is right for your setup?
| What matters to you | What to check |
|---|---|
| No audio cable during play | Choose a headset with a wireless connection supported by your platform, and check its power and charging requirements. |
| Play while charging | Look for explicit manufacturer confirmation for the exact model and platform; charging during play is not universal. |
| Wired fallback | Confirm the headset supports the required analog or USB audio connection, whether it works without power, and what happens to its microphone and other features. |
| Wireless charging | Confirm the headset itself supports Qi or another specified wireless charging method, and verify charger compatibility. Wireless audio alone does not imply this. |
| Replacement charging cable | Check the headset’s port and exact model. SteelSeries lists USB-C for several newer product families and micro-USB for older wireless models; do not choose a cable by brand alone. SteelSeries: replacement charging cable guidance. |
| Latency, sound, microphone, comfort, or price | Compare specific models using evidence relevant to your platform and priorities. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal wired-versus-wireless winner on these factors. |
Do wired gaming headsets have less delay?
There is no universal conclusion here: the available manufacturer guidance does not provide controlled comparative latency measurements across wired and wireless headsets. Connection type alone is not enough to establish how much delay a particular setup will have. If latency is decisive, compare the exact headset models and connection modes using reliable measurements for the devices you plan to use.
