United Wizards of the Coast-CWA (UWOTC-CWA) says the company’s decision sends both organizing efforts into the National Labor Relations Board’s secret-ballot election process. It is the second Wizards union effort in 2026 to follow that route: the Magic: The Gathering Arena unit reportedly won its election with 83% support.
What happened
The D&D and Studio X teams announced their intention to join UWOTC-CWA on October 6, 2026. Their deadline for asking Wizards to recognize the units voluntarily passed on October 13. On October 14, the union said Wizards told organizers it did not intend to recognize either unit without an election. Wargamer, Rascal News and Backseat Gamer reported the decision on October 15 and 16.

UWOTC-CWA described the company’s position this way: “Yesterday, Wizards informed us that it doesn’t intend to voluntarily recognize the D&D or Studio X units of our union ahead of a vote.”
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| June 2026 | UWOTC-CWA formed from the Magic: The Gathering Arena development team’s organizing effort. |
| October 6, 2026 | D&D/D&D Beyond and Studio X staff announced their intention to unionize with UWOTC-CWA. |
| October 13, 2026 | The deadline for voluntary recognition passed. |
| October 14, 2026 | UWOTC-CWA said Wizards notified it that the company would not recognize the two units before a vote. |
| October 15–16, 2026 | News reports described the refusal and the move toward an NLRB election. |
What “voluntary recognition” would have meant
Voluntary recognition is an employer’s decision to recognize a union after organizers demonstrate sufficient employee support, without first holding a representation election. By declining that option, Wizards is requiring the question to be settled through the NLRB process. Eligible employees will vote by secret ballot on whether the union will represent their unit.

Wizards’ staff communication, quoted by Wargamer, said “it is the right of every eligible employee to decide whether union representation is right for them.” That explains the company’s stated rationale, but it does not provide a detailed account of Wizards’ planned election campaign.
The refusal does not end the organizing effort and does not mean either new unit has voted against unionization. It changes the recognition path from an employer decision to a formal election.

How this compares with the Magic: The Gathering Arena effort
UWOTC-CWA is the same union organization that grew out of the Arena campaign. The work covered and the procedural status differ between the efforts.
| 2026 effort | Work covered | Recognition path | Published result or status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magic: The Gathering Arena | Digital development for the Arena game | Election | Wargamer reports that 83% of workers voted in favor of unionization. |
| D&D/D&D Beyond | Dungeons & Dragons and the D&D Beyond platform | Voluntary recognition declined; NLRB election process next | No election date or result has been published. |
| Studio X | Most creative staff working on tabletop Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters | Voluntary recognition declined; NLRB election process next | No election date or result has been published. |
The Arena result is a precedent for the union, not a prediction for the D&D or Studio X vote. The new units have not yet voted, and no expected margin has been announced.

What organizers say they want
UWOTC-CWA’s platform focuses on workplace rules and protections that would be negotiated if the units are certified and the parties reach a collective-bargaining agreement:

- Compensation and advancement: fair wages, transparent career progression and greater job security during industry instability.
- Workload and location: sustainable workloads, opposition to crunch and protections for remote work, including opposition to forced return-to-office practices.
- Healthcare: reliable, accessible coverage with manageable deductibles and co-pays.
- Artificial intelligence: an enforceable policy governing leadership’s use of large language models and other generative-AI systems.
- Personal intellectual property: full ownership of unrelated work employees create on their own time.
These are organizing demands, not terms Wizards has agreed to. A union election would decide representation; bargaining over these subjects would be a separate step.

What happens next
- NLRB procedure: The parties proceed through the Board’s representation-election process for the proposed units.
- Eligibility and unit questions: The employees eligible to vote and the final boundaries of each unit must be established through that process.
- Secret-ballot election: Eligible workers will vote privately on whether UWOTC-CWA represents them.
- Certification and bargaining: If a unit wins the election and is certified, Wizards would be required to bargain with the union. Negotiations would then determine whether any of the platform’s priorities become contract terms.
As of the October 15–16 reports, no election date, NLRB case number or eligible-employee count had been published for either unit. Those details remain open until a Board filing or a new statement from Wizards or UWOTC-CWA provides them.
Why the decision matters
The episode shows two different stages of the same 2026 organizing campaign. Wizards did not accept voluntary recognition for the Arena, D&D or Studio X efforts, so each question is being resolved through employee ballots rather than a company acknowledgment. The Arena unit’s reported 83% result gives UWOTC-CWA an early organizing success, while the D&D and Studio X units now face their own votes and their own workplace-specific questions.
