wlanmmhc.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system file associated with the legacy wireless LAN and Dot11 component family. If it is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows and its component store rather than downloading a replacement DLL from an unofficial site.

That does not prove that the same file is shipped unchanged in every modern Windows release. Some third-party records list it for newer Windows versions by repeating older metadata. Fix corrupted or missing Windows files first
This is the most appropriate repair when the message appears across Windows, during networking, or after system corruption.
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control appears.
2. Repair the Windows component store
Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component store that SFC uses as its repair source.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the program, startup action, or network function that produced the error.
A successful result normally says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time.
If DISM cannot find source files and Windows Update cannot provide them, use a repair source from matching installation media:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a known-good source for the same Windows edition and build. Do not use files copied from another computer with a different Windows installation.

Repeatedly hunting for individual files makes this repair harder because the missing DLL may be only one symptom of broader corruption. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention, while its repair functions require the full version; Windows DISM and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path, and neither paid software nor a scan is required.
Install pending Windows updates
A failed or interrupted servicing operation can leave a Windows component unavailable.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Run DISM and SFC after the update process completes.
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then select Check for updates.
If the error began after a failed update and Windows 11 displays Fix problems using Windows Update, open Start > Settings > System > Recovery and select Reinstall now beside that option. This Microsoft repair reinstall preserves personal files, installed applications, and settings where the feature is available.
Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a system file, although quarantine is only one possible cause for this particular error.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the file disappeared.
- Expand a relevant detection and read its details before taking action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches wlanmmhc.dll. If a detection is clearly false and the file is confirmed as a legitimate Microsoft-signed copy, use the available restore or allow option. Microsoft warns that a restored quarantined file can be detected again unless it is explicitly allowed.
The safer default is to let DISM and SFC restore the protected Windows component. If malware may have been involved, update Microsoft Defender and run a Full scan before repairing Windows.
Repair or reinstall the affected program only when appropriate
A Windows DLL error often mentions the program that failed to start, which can make the application look responsible. Reinstalling that program is usually irrelevant when the missing file belongs to Windows.

For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- Use Reset or reinstall only if Repair does not help.
For a traditional desktop application, download its installer only from the developer’s official source, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and install the current version supported by that developer. Do not allow the installer to replace unrelated Windows system files.
No specific game or application has been reliably established as the owner of wlanmmhc.dll. If an old program expects a file that is absent from the current operating system, its compatibility package or replacement version may be the real fix.
Check wireless drivers and Device Manager
A driver problem can produce a similar failure, especially if the error began immediately after changing wireless hardware or installing a driver package. Device Manager will not normally reinstall wlanmmhc.dll itself, but it can identify a related WLAN device problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for a wireless adapter with a warning icon.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab.
If the problem began after a recent driver change, select Roll Back Driver if available. Otherwise select Update Driver, then Search automatically for drivers. You can also select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and allow Windows to rediscover the adapter. Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows cannot find a suitable one.
Do not copy a WLAN DLL into a driver directory. A driver package and a Windows system component are different repair targets.
Manually checking many hardware models and driver releases is easy to get wrong. regsvr32 is designed for self-registering COM DLLs that provide registration exports such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for restoring missing, damaged, or unregistered Windows DLLs.
There is no reliable evidence that wlanmmhc.dll should be registered manually. Running commands such as these can produce another error without repairing the underlying problem:

regsvr32 wlanmmhc.dll
If Windows reports that the file is missing, corrupted, or not compatible, use DISM and SFC instead. Registration is relevant only when official documentation for a particular COM component explicitly instructs you to register it.

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wlanmmhc.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load a dependency required by it.
Architecture also matters:
- A 32-bit program needs compatible 32-bit dependencies.
- A 64-bit program needs compatible 64-bit dependencies.
- On 64-bit Windows,
System32is the normal native system directory. SysWOW64contains 32-bit system components.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit system directory, or the reverse. Do not follow generic instructions telling you to place this specific file in SysWOW64; that advice is not verified for this component.
If the file exists at its expected path but an old program still fails, repair Windows first, then identify the program’s architecture and dependencies. Windows Event Viewer may provide a more useful module name:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failure.
- Record the faulting application and module names.
Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver installation, application installation, update, or cleanup operation.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed drivers and applications. If there are no restore points or the restore fails, continue with DISM and SFC.

Repair an older Windows installation
The evidence for wlanmmhc.dll is strongest on Vista and Windows 7-era installations. On those systems, a severely damaged installation may need:
- Matching original Windows installation media.
- An OEM recovery image.
- An in-place repair installation.
- A clean installation after backing up personal files.
Use media that matches the installed edition and architecture. Do not substitute a DLL taken from another Windows build. If storage errors are suspected, back up important files before attempting major repairs and investigate disk health.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A download page offering wlanmmhc.dll may provide the wrong architecture, an old version, incomplete dependencies, or a modified file. Even a file with the correct name may not match the Windows build that needs it, and copying it into an application folder can hide the real component-store problem.

- Whether the error occurs at startup, during networking, or only in one old program.
- Whether
