Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →wlanui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Wireless Profile UI. If wlanui.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is connected to the Windows WLAN API function WlanUIEditProfile, which displays and edits advanced wireless-network profile settings. It is not the Wi-Fi adapter driver, a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX, .NET, or ordinary game middleware. Microsoft documents the relationship in its WlanUIEditProfile reference.

These are historical examples, not a complete current version list, and none should be treated as a universally interchangeable replacement.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because wlanui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application has failed to start because wlanui.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading wlanui.dll.”
- “wlanui.dll could not be loaded.”
- “wlanui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot find
C:WindowsSystem32wlanui.dll.”
The wording depends on Windows and the application reporting the problem.

A missing-file message can mean the file was deleted, quarantined, damaged, or replaced with an incompatible copy. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by wlanui.dll is missing. The named file is not always the only problem.
Start with the repair steps below in order.
1. Install Windows updates and restart
A failed update or damaged component store can leave a Windows DLL unavailable.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
Test the affected program after Windows starts again. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. The update process can provide the repair files that Windows needs.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and restore protected system files. Running SFC first can fail when its underlying repair source is damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while. Do not close the window just because progress appears slow.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the Command Prompt open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the application again.
A result stating that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them is a good sign. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the problem may be application-specific or caused by a dependency. If it says that some files could not be repaired, continue to the advanced repair section below.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing detected Windows problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when only one program is affected.
3. Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged-looking system file. Do not immediately restore it simply because an application reports it missing.

Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
wlanui.dll. - Read the detection details and the file path.
If Microsoft Defender identifies the file as malware, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. If the event is clearly a false positive, verify the file’s Microsoft digital signature and scan the system before considering restoration. Microsoft explains the risks of restoring quarantined items in its Protection History guidance.
After restoring a confirmed false positive, run DISM and SFC again. If the file was altered by malware, restoring the isolated DLL alone does not make the installation trustworthy.
4. Confirm the expected location and architecture
On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit system directory is:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11%WINDIR%System32
The 32-bit system directory is:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
Those names are counterintuitive. System32 contains native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files for 32-bit applications. Windows handles the normal redirection automatically. Microsoft describes this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
To check the folders:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32. - Press Enter.
- Search for
wlanui.dll. - If Windows is 64-bit, also inspect
%WINDIR%SysWOW64.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64. Do not copy either system file into a game or application directory to force it to load. A “not designed to run on Windows” error commonly indicates a wrong-architecture, wrong-build, truncated, or corrupted binary.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Read System type.
If only an older 32-bit application fails while Windows wireless features work normally, the application may be using an incorrect private DLL path or may have another missing dependency. Repair the application rather than replacing system files.
5. Repair the affected application
If Windows starts normally, wireless networks work, and only one game or program reports wlanui.dll, the application may be the real source of the loading failure.
Use the publisher’s official installer or built-in repair function:

- Close the program.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair or Reset, when offered.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking feature. If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer.
Do not assume Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is responsible just because the failure occurs while launching a game. Those runtimes may be relevant to another error, but wlanui.dll itself is a Windows WLAN component.
If the program is old, try its compatibility settings:
- Right-click the application shortcut or executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Compatibility mode will not repair a missing Windows component, but it can help an old application that uses an obsolete loading method.
6. Separate the DLL problem from a Wi-Fi driver problem
wlanui.dll is not the wireless adapter driver. Reinstalling a Wi-Fi driver does not directly replace this Windows DLL.
Check the adapter separately:
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the wireless adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device error.
- Open the Driver tab and review the driver status.
- Use Update Driver, or install the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer.
If the adapter has a warning icon, network connectivity is broken, or the issue began after a driver change, the driver deserves separate repair. If Windows reports no adapter problem and only one program fails, focus on that program instead.
Manually hunting through several hardware vendors for matching driver packages is slow and makes it easy to install the wrong branch. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and show what needs attention, while the driver installation feature is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace Windows component repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It works when a DLL provides registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, which are used by some COM and ActiveX components. Microsoft documents those requirements in its regsvr32 reference.
wlanui.dll is documented as a Windows WLAN API DLL, not as a self-registering COM component. Running this command is therefore not a normal repair step:

regsvr32 wlanui.dll
It may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.” That does not mean the file needs a different registration command.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Use a matching repair source if DISM cannot fix Windows
If DISM says that source files could not be found, use genuine Windows installation media that matches the installed Windows edition, build family, and architecture.
Recommended Free Tools
Microsoft documents the general form as:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a matching Windows repair source. Do not use a random ISO or a source from a different architecture.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Then restart. If SFC still cannot repair files, inspect:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
The log is detailed and difficult to read, but it can confirm which protected files remain damaged. Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions cover the supported repair sequence.
9. Escalate to System Restore or Windows repair
Use System Restore when the problem began after a known recent update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or system change and a restore point is available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without deliberately removing personal files. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If no restore point exists, or Windows still reports that wlanui.dll is damaged, use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair installation. An in-place reinstall can rebuild Windows while preserving personal files and installed applications when the correct options are selected. Back up important data first. Microsoft outlines the escalation paths in its Windows recovery options.

What not to do
- Do not download
wlanui.dllfrom a generic DLL website. - Do not copy an unknown DLL into
System32,SysWOW64, or a game folder. - Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
- Do not treat an old file version as universally compatible.
- Do not run registry cleaners or DLL repair utilities.
- Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a specific fix for this file without evidence that another error requires them.
- Do not restore an antivirus-quarantined file until its signature and security status are verified.
- Do not use
regsvr32just because the filename ends in.dll.
A downloaded replacement can contain malware, target the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail because a dependency is missing. Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, and the affected program’s official installer are the safe repair sources.
FAQ
Is wlanui.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A copy in an unexpected application folder, a copy with an invalid Microsoft signature, or a file detected by security software deserves investigation. Location alone is not proof, so scan the system and verify the signature.
Should I reinstall my Wi-Fi driver?
Only if Device Manager shows an adapter problem or wireless networking is also failing. A driver reinstall does not repair wlanui.dll itself.
Does this file belong to Visual C++?
No. wlanui.dll is associated with Windows Wireless Profile UI and the WLAN API. Reinstalling Visual C++ is not the standard fix.
Why does the file exist but Windows still say it is missing?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, be corrupted, be the wrong architecture, or be inaccessible to the application. Run DISM and SFC, then repair the affected application.
Can I manually replace the file?
Only as an advanced last resort using a known-good file from identical Windows media, with matching architecture, build, and verified Microsoft signature. A random downloaded DLL is not an acceptable source.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if DISM and SFC both fail?
Retry DISM with a matching repair source, then consider System Restore, Windows recovery, or an in-place repair installation. If the issue followed malware or disk errors, address those causes before replacing system files.
