Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
If wlidux.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to start an older Windows Live application whose shared installation is incomplete or damaged. wlidux.dll is the Windows Live ID UI Module, a genuine Microsoft file used by Windows Live and Windows Essentials software.
Which fix applies to you
Use the error dialog and file path to choose the starting point.
- If the dialog names Windows Live Mail, Messenger, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Writer, or another Windows Live program, repair or reinstall that parent application first.
- If the file disappeared after an antivirus detection, check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling.
- If the error appeared after a crash, unexpected shutdown, disk warning, or file-recovery message, investigate storage corruption and back up important data.
- If
wlidux.dllexists but Windows says “specified module could not be found,” another dependency may be missing. The named DLL is not always the only problem. - If the path points to
System32,SysWOW64, Downloads, or a temporary folder, do not replace it automatically. The normal location is under the Windows Live installation directory. - If the application is obsolete and cannot be reinstalled on Windows 10 or Windows 11, preserve its data and migrate to a supported replacement.
What wlidux.dll is and where it belongs
wlidux.dll normally belongs in a shared Windows Live directory such as:

C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveSharedwlidux.dll
It is not a Windows-protected System32 component. It is also not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or device driver.
The exact parent program cannot be identified from the filename alone. Possible users include Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, Windows Live Writer, and related Windows Essentials components. Microsoft lists these applications as part of the Windows Essentials family, which is discontinued and no longer available for download from Microsoft. Already-installed applications may continue working, but they are unsupported. Microsoft’s Windows Essentials support page
To identify the application, read the complete error dialog. If it includes a path such as:
C:Program Files (x86)Windows LiveMailwlmail.exe
then Windows Live Mail is the application to repair. If it names a different executable, repair that product instead.

This is the most likely fix because wlidux.dll is an application file.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - In Programs and Features, look for Windows Essentials, Windows Live Essentials, or the specific Windows Live application.
- Select it and choose Change, Repair, or Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair if that option is available.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
- Start the application that originally produced the error.
If the application starts normally, the shared file was repaired or restored. If the repair option is absent, continue with a reinstall.
Before uninstalling Windows Live Mail, back up mail profiles and personal data. Before removing Photo Gallery or Movie Maker, copy projects, catalogs, and media to a separate location.

Fix 2: Reinstall from the original installer
Windows Essentials 2012 is obsolete, unsupported, and no longer offered as a current Microsoft download. Do not assume that a random installer or a DLL download is an official replacement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you have the original Microsoft installer, installation media, or a known-good organizational backup:
- Copy the installer to a local folder.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Choose the Windows Live components you actually need.
- Allow the installer to complete.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected application and test the operation that previously failed.
A historical full installer was called wlsetup-all.exe. Archived Microsoft references to that installer are not a current support or compatibility guarantee. Use an installer only when you can verify its source and legitimacy.
If Windows reports that the installer cannot run, the program is incompatible, or required online services are unavailable, do not force the installation by copying individual DLLs. Save the application’s user data and plan a migration.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined or removed the file. Check this before downloading anything.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
wlidux.dll. - Expand the detection and inspect the original file path.
- Restore the file only if it was in the expected Windows Live directory and the Windows Live installation is legitimate.
- Restart the affected application.
If Microsoft Defender removes the file again, update security intelligence and scan the system. Do not add a broad exclusion just to keep an obsolete application running. Microsoft documents the supported quarantine recovery process, including Defender command-line options, in its quarantined-file restoration guidance.
A file found in Downloads, a temporary directory, or an unfamiliar application folder needs additional investigation rather than automatic restoration.

Fix 4: Check for disk or filesystem corruption
A “not designed to run on Windows” message after an unexpected shutdown, disk error, or filesystem recovery event can indicate that the DLL itself was damaged.
First back up documents, mail data, photos, and project files. Then check the drive’s health using the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility or Windows’ own drive error reporting. If the drive shows repeated errors, deal with the storage problem before repeatedly reinstalling applications.
After backing up, repair Windows components:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt or Terminal.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the application again.
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are unlikely to recreate a missing wlidux.dll under Program Files; reinstall the Windows Live application for that. Microsoft documents the DISM repair procedure and System File Checker.
If manually hunting through repair logs and repeating DISM/SFC leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected Windows problems through its free scan; repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Windows Live application remains the definitive fix for a missing application DLL.
Fix 5: Check the architecture and file location
Known catalogue records for wlidux.dll are x86, or 32-bit. A 32-bit Windows Live program normally needs its 32-bit DLL in the program’s own Windows Live directory, even when Windows 10 or Windows 11 is 64-bit.
Do not substitute similarly named files such as:
wlidcli.dllwlidsvc.dll- another file from a different Windows Live installation
- a 64-bit DLL from an unrelated program
Do not copy wlidux.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not the normal installation location for this file, and copying it there can conceal the real problem while creating version conflicts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the DLL exists in the expected Windows LiveShared directory but the application still fails, inspect the full error and Event Viewer. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by wlidux.dll is missing.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. There is no public evidence that wlidux.dll is such a component.

Running:
regsvr32 wlidux.dll
may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean the DLL is missing. It means registration is not the appropriate repair.
For this file, repair or reinstall the Windows Live parent application instead. Microsoft describes the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 documentation.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when another error identifies one
A device driver is not a normal cause of a standalone wlidux.dll error. Consider drivers only when the application failure also names a graphics, audio, storage, or other hardware component.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the component named in the error.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Review the Device status message under the General tab.
- Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not update every driver simply because wlidux.dll is missing. If you are dealing with several stale or mismatched devices and want an automated inventory, Outbyte Driver Updater can identify driver issues through its free scan; driver installation is performed by the full version. This is optional and does not replace repairing the Windows Live installation.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Downloading wlidux.dll from an unverified DLL website is unreliable and unsafe. The file may be the wrong historical version, the wrong architecture, modified, unsigned, or bundled with malware. Even a genuine copy may not fix a missing dependency or the damaged Windows Live installation that caused the error.
Manual copying also commonly puts the file in the wrong directory. The safe sources are:
