“The program can’t start because sensorshidclassdriver.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
If Windows reports that sensorshidclassdriver.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or could not be loaded, the problem is usually a damaged Windows sensor driver package, not a missing game DLL. This file is Microsoft’s in-box Sensor HID Class Driver, included with Windows beginning with Windows 8.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the shortest sensible path:
- The error appeared after Windows Update or a feature upgrade: install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- A sensor, tablet, laptop hotkey, auto-rotation feature, or presence sensor stopped working: update, reinstall, or roll back the related device in Device Manager.
- Windows Security recently quarantined the file: check Protection history before restoring anything.
- The problem began after a driver installer or manufacturer update: roll back the sensor or chipset driver.
- Only one game or application shows the message: do not assume that application owns the file. Repair Windows and identify which device or dependency generated the error.
- DISM, SFC, and driver repair all fail: use System Restore, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, or the computer manufacturer’s official driver and recovery package.
Do not begin by downloading sensorshidclassdriver.dll from a random DLL website.
#1 Best Overall
What sensorshidclassdriver.dll actually is
sensorshidclassdriver.dll belongs to the Windows Sensor HID Class Driver. It handles sensor devices that communicate through the Human Interface Device, or HID, transport.
Supported hardware can include:
- Accelerometers
- Orientation sensors
- Ambient-light sensors
- Temperature sensors
- Pressure sensors
- Compasses
- Gyroscopes
- Humidity sensors
- Inclinometers
- Presence and proximity sensors
This is a hardware driver component, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or ordinary application dependency. Microsoft’s Sensor HID Class Driver documentation describes its role and supported sensor types.
Some public file listings describe the file as belonging to the “program that installed it” or identify historical 32-bit entries such as version 6.2.9200.16433. Those labels do not mean that a game or desktop application should supply the file. Windows selects the driver package that matches the operating-system build, device, and architecture.
The file may be stored inside the protected DriverStore, commonly below:

Do not assume it must be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The exact directory varies by Windows release, architecture, and driver-package revision. Newer driver metadata may also refer to SensorsHid.dll within the sensor package.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair Windows files
This is the best first repair when the error appeared after an interrupted update, cleanup operation, feature upgrade, or unexplained system change.
Install pending updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Install relevant driver updates if they are offered.
- Restart the computer.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Open View optional updates, if available.
- Install suitable driver updates.
- Restart.
Windows Update may restore the correct driver package without requiring a loose DLL file. You will know this worked if the error no longer appears and the affected sensor, such as auto-rotation or ambient brightness, functions again.
Run DISM and SFC
If updating does not help, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies system components. SFC checks protected files against that repaired image. Microsoft documents this sequence in its guidance for repairing a Windows image.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupt files, test the sensor again. If DISM reports that the source files could not be found, install pending updates and repeat the repair while connected to the internet. Do not repeatedly copy a replacement DLL into system folders.
If you would rather avoid manually hunting through update history and repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in repair commands remain the primary path.
Fix 2: Update or reinstall the sensor driver
If a sensor stopped working at the same time as the DLL error, the device package is a more likely culprit than an application installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Identify the device
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand likely categories, including:
- Sensors
- Human Interface Devices
- System devices
- Other devices
- Look for a sensor, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Double-click it and read the Device status message.
The affected entry may not literally be named sensorshidclassdriver.dll. Sensor hardware can be exposed through a vendor-specific name, an HID device name, or an unknown-device entry.
Update the driver
- In Device Manager, right-click the suspected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Install the offered driver.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows cannot find a driver:
- Right-click the device again.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart the computer.
Windows will attempt to reinstall the device package during startup. Microsoft provides the same Device Manager update and reinstall procedure.
For a laptop or tablet, use the manufacturer’s official support page when Windows Update cannot find the sensor package. Install the package intended for your exact model and Windows architecture. Do not mix a historical 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit driver package.
Manually comparing dozens of driver versions is tedious, especially after a major Windows update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers it identifies as outdated; the free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the OEM support page or Device Manager remains the safer manual route.

If the problem began immediately after a driver or Windows update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the affected sensor or related device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Choose a reason and confirm.
- Restart.
The rollback button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver package. In that case, use the manufacturer’s official package or restore the system to an earlier restore point.
Fix 3: Check whether Defender quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged, replaced, or falsely detected driver file.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to the sensor driver or its package.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. First confirm that it is a Microsoft-signed file located in the expected Windows driver package. Microsoft warns that a restored item may be detected again. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
If the detection returns, run a full security scan and investigate the driver package instead of disabling Defender. A file that has been replaced in the wrong location may be malware pretending to be a Windows component.
Fix 4: Interpret the error correctly
You may see messages such as:
There was a problem starting sensorshidclassdriver.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
Error loading sensorshidclassdriver.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
The code execution cannot proceed because sensorshidclassdriver.dll was not found.
sensorshidclassdriver.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
A “specified module could not be found” message does not always mean that the named file itself is absent. Windows may have found the file but failed to load a dependency, driver package, framework component, or architecture-compatible module.
This is also why reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is usually irrelevant. Those components do not own the Windows Sensor HID driver. Likewise, reinstalling a game is not the normal fix unless evidence shows that the game itself bundled or modified the component.

System Restore
Use System Restore when the problem followed a recent driver installation, update, cleanup tool, or system change.
- Press Windows key, type
restore. - Select Create a restore point.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files in place. Review the affected programs list before confirming. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
Windows 11 repair reinstall
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. It is appropriate when Windows servicing is damaged but the installation still starts normally. See Microsoft’s repair reinstall instructions.

What not to do
- Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website.
- Do not copy a 32-bit file into a 64-bit driver package.
- Do not place the file beside a game or application unless Microsoft or the hardware vendor explicitly provides that package.
- Do not repeatedly delete files from DriverStore.
- Do not run
regsvr32 SensorsHIDClassDriver.dll.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration, typically through DllRegisterServer. A UMDF driver is loaded through the Windows Driver Manager and its driver package, not registered like an ordinary application DLL. Microsoft describes this loading model through its UMDF overview and driver host documentation.
If the error remains
Check these locations for evidence:
- Device Manager error codes and device status
- Settings > Windows Update > Update history
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log- Windows Security Protection history
- The computer manufacturer’s sensor, chipset, and system-driver packages
- Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System
Record the Windows version, whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit, the computer model, the affected sensor, the exact error text, and what changed immediately before the failure.
If the sensor hardware itself is defective, software repair will not restore it. A persistent Device Manager error after a clean official driver installation may require manufacturer diagnostics or hardware service.
FAQ
Is sensorshidclassdriver.dll malware?
The documented component is a genuine Microsoft Windows sensor driver. A file with that name in an unexpected folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, still deserves investigation. Location and signature matter more than the filename alone.
Does it belong in System32 or SysWOW64?
Not necessarily. It is serviced as part of a Windows driver package and commonly resides under DriverStore. Let Windows install the correct package instead of choosing a folder manually.
Should I install a Visual C++ package?
Usually no. This file is a Windows sensor driver component, not a Visual C++ runtime library.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I fix it by reinstalling my game?
Usually no. A normal game should not own the Windows Sensor HID driver. First repair Windows and identify the affected hardware. Reinstall the application only if its own files are independently damaged.
Does Windows 10 support it?
The driver ships with Windows beginning with Windows 8, so Windows 10 and Windows 11 use the Windows sensor-driver model. The exact package and filename can vary by build and hardware.
Why does the error mention a program?
Windows loader messages often use generic application wording. That does not prove the named program supplied the DLL or that the program is the correct repair target.
