The file is the WMI DFS Provider. It exposes Distributed File System functionality through Windows Management Instrumentation, particularly the Win32_DFSNode, Win32_DFSTarget, and Win32_DFSNodeTarget classes in the RootCIMV2 namespace. Microsoft lists the DFS provider among its operating-system WMI providers.

A public sample has been identified as 64-bit with version 10.0.19041.1, but that does not establish a universal version for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. Do not use a sample version, size, or path to judge every copy of the file.

What the error means
You may see one of these loader-style messages:
wmipdfs.dll is missing from your computerThe code execution cannot proceed because wmipdfs.dll was not foundCannot find wmipdfs.dllThere was a problem starting wmipdfs.dllwmipdfs.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error
These messages usually mean that Windows or an application tried to load the provider and could not use the installed copy. Possible causes include:
- A deleted or corrupted Windows system file.
- Windows Update or component-store corruption.
- Antivirus quarantine.
- A damaged management application or DFS installation.
- A recent driver, software, or configuration change.
- Malware or a counterfeit file with the same name.
There is no authoritative evidence tying this specific DLL to a particular consumer game. If a game displays the message, first identify the executable that actually requested the file. The game may be exposing a Windows problem rather than shipping wmipdfs.dll itself.
Fix wmipdfs.dll errors in order
1. Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows servicing. A pending update or incomplete restart can leave protected components in an inconsistent state.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Check for updates again after the restart.
Test the program that produced the error. If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than downloading the DLL.
2. Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
This is the primary repair path for a missing or corrupted wmipdfs.dll. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses to restore protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
Microsoft’s complete procedure is documented in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
The SFC result tells you what to do next:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect protected-file corruption. Continue with the application, security, and diagnostic steps below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If it still fails, use a matching repair source or consider an in-place Windows repair.
- DISM cannot find source files: Do not supply a random DLL. Repair Windows Update or provide installation media that matches the installed Windows version closely. Microsoft describes this situation in its DISM repair-source guidance.
Repeating SFC without checking what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the standard Microsoft repair path.
3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Microsoft Defender or another security product may have removed the file. Do not assume this happened, and do not restore a quarantined item until its provenance is verified.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an item referring to
wmipdfs.dllor the Windows system location. - Open the detection details.
- Confirm that the detected file is the Microsoft system file and not a similarly named file in an unexpected application folder.
- If you are confident it is a legitimate Microsoft file and the system is clean, use the available Restore or Allow on device action.
- Restart Windows and run
sfc /scannowagain.
Microsoft warns that restoring a suspicious file can cause detection to return. Read the detection details first. See Microsoft’s Protection History instructions and quarantine restoration guidance.
If the file keeps disappearing, update Defender, run a full scan, and then run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection to make the error disappear.
4. Repair the program that reports the error
If only one management tool or application produces the message, the parent program may be damaged even though Windows itself is healthy.
First identify the program:
- Reproduce the error.
- Note the application name and the full message.
- Check whether other programs can run normally.
- If the message appears during startup, inspect the program’s shortcut and installation directory.
- Do not assume that the program owns
wmipdfs.dll.
For a compatible Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, choose Installed apps. On Windows 10, choose Apps & features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the program and test it.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, use Reset where appropriate, or uninstall and reinstall the program from its official vendor.
Repairing the parent program is especially relevant when the error began after an interrupted installation or when only that program fails. Microsoft provides additional application repair guidance for programs that cannot be installed or removed.
If the application is a game, use its file-verification feature only when the game actually owns the missing file. There is no verified basis for assuming that mainstream games distribute this Windows WMI provider.
5. Check Windows Server DFS features
This step is mainly for Windows Server administrators. The DFS role and its management components are installed through Windows Server roles and features. Relevant feature names include:

- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
FS-DFS-NamespaceFS-DFS-ReplicationRSAT-DFS-Mgmt-Con
Reinstalling a DFS role is not automatically the cure for a missing core Windows DLL. First run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
To inspect installed features:
- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Choose Add Roles and Features.
- Continue to the Server Roles page.
- Expand File and Storage Services.
- Review the DFS-related selections.
- Cancel if you only needed to inspect the configuration.
You can also inspect features from an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-WindowsFeature FS-DFS-Namespace,FS-DFS-Replication,RSAT-DFS-Mgmt-Con
If a required DFS role is absent, install it through Server Manager or the documented Microsoft procedure for installing DFS Replication. Review the DFS Namespaces overview before changing a production namespace or replication configuration.
6. Repair or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
A driver update is not the normal repair for wmipdfs.dll, and Device Manager will not replace a missing Windows WMI provider. Use this branch only if the error began immediately after a hardware, storage, network, or management-driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when a suitable update is available through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
- If the issue began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Do not remove an important storage or network driver without a recovery plan. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation is handled by its full version; it is optional, and the official hardware manufacturer or Windows Update remains the safer source for a known driver.

7. Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began directly after a driver, update, application, or configuration change and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also reach it through Windows Recovery Environment:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced startup > Restart now.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
8. Inspect the file instead of replacing it
If wmipdfs.dll exists but Windows still cannot load it, the problem may involve the wrong architecture, a damaged signature, dependencies, or the executable making the request.

- The exact path of the file.
- The executable that displays the error.
- Whether the file is in a normal Windows system location.
- Whether its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- Whether the error affects one program or the whole system.
- The Windows edition and build.
- Recent entries in Event Viewer.
To inspect the signature:
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to the reported file location.
- Right-click
wmipdfs.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Review the signer details and signature status.
A file with the right name in a temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny. Do not overwrite it with a downloaded copy.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the normal system directory name for 64-bit components, while 32-bit applications may use redirected system locations. The folder name alone does not prove the architecture. Never copy a 64-bit sample into a 32-bit location or the reverse.
What not to do
Do not download wmipdfs.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL downloads are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or fail to repair the damaged component store. A copied file can also create signature and servicing problems.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Windows installation media, or the official vendor of the affected application instead.

Do not install every Visual C++ package
wmipdfs.dll is a Windows WMI DFS provider. No Microsoft source identifies it as a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX package, or .NET component. Reinstalling those runtimes is not a justified first response.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry points. It is not a general-purpose repair command for missing or corrupted Windows components. Running:
regsvr32 wmipdfs.dll
may produce an entry-point or registration error and does not prove that the file is damaged.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration utility, not as a replacement for DISM or SFC. Use it only when the official software documentation specifically requires registration of that particular DLL.
Do not copy the file manually
Manual replacement can introduce a mismatched Windows build, architecture, signature, or servicing state. Microsoft’s manual replacement procedure is a last resort after SFC identifies a specific protected file that it could not repair, using a known-good copy from the same Windows version. Follow Microsoft’s SFC manual-replacement guidance.
If the error remains
Collect these details before escalating:
- The complete error text.
- The executable that produces it.
- The full path shown in the message or event log.
- Whether
wmipdfs.dllexists. - The file’s signature status.
- The Windows edition and build.
- The output from DISM and SFC.
- Whether Windows Security quarantined anything.
- Whether the problem began after an update, driver, cleanup utility, or application installation.
If SFC repaired files but the error remains, the triggering executable may be damaged or may be requesting the file from an incorrect location. If SFC cannot repair it, use DISM with a matching repair source, then consider an in-place Windows repair or System Restore.
FAQ
Is wmipdfs.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is Microsoft’s WMI DFS Provider, a Windows component associated with Distributed File System management through WMI.
Is wmipdfs.dll a virus?
The legitimate Microsoft file is not malware. A file with this name in an unexpected directory, without a valid Microsoft signature, or repeatedly recreated by an unknown process should be investigated with Microsoft Defender.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Where should wmipdfs.dll be located?
It is normally managed in a Windows system location, commonly within the WMI folder under System32. The exact path can vary by Windows release, architecture, and system configuration, so do not treat one path as universal.
Do I need a Visual C++ redistributable?
There is no verified evidence that this file is supplied by Visual C++. Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Usually no. regsvr32 registers DLLs that support the required registration entry points; it does not restore a deleted or corrupted Windows component.
Should I reinstall DFS?
Only when a Windows Server DFS role or management feature is actually missing or damaged. Reinstalling a DFS role is not the standard fix for a missing core DLL.

Check its location, Microsoft signature, architecture, dependencies, Event Viewer entries, and the executable that requested it. Do not replace it until those details are known.
Is there one correct version or file size?
No universal version, size, timestamp, or architecture should be applied to every Windows installation. Build-specific differences are normal, and a public sample does not define all installations.
