wmitimep.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). If Windows reports that wmitimep.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest order is:
- Install Windows updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then System File Checker.
- Repair or reinstall the affected application if only one program fails.
- Check the file path, Microsoft signature, architecture, and security history.
- Escalate to a matching repair source, System Restore, or an in-place Windows repair if Windows cannot restore the component.
What wmitimep.dll does
wmitimep.dll is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. It implements a WMI provider associated with the Win32_CurrentTime, Win32_LocalTime, and Win32_UTCTime classes in the RootCIMV2 namespace. Windows and applications can use these WMI classes to obtain current, local, and UTC time information.

Microsoft documents Wmitimep.dll together with the provider’s Wmitimep.mof file. The MOF file describes WMI provider registration; the DLL is not an ordinary application runtime such as a Visual C++ library.
The file is normally found under a Windows component path similar to:

The exact installed file can vary with the Windows release, servicing level, language, and architecture. Do not treat a file size or version copied from another computer as a universal standard.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates.
A partially installed update or interrupted upgrade can leave a protected Windows component damaged or unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the program or WMI-dependent function again.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test the failing program.
If Windows Update itself reports an error, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance rather than downloading wmitimep.dll separately. If the error began immediately after an interrupted upgrade, continue with DISM and SFC below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of wmitimep.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then uses that repaired store to check and replace protected system files.
Save your work before starting. The commands may take time and can appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait until DISM finishes. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application again.
What the results mean
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and successfully repaired them, restart and test the original program.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the file may be present but the application may have a damaged installation, a missing dependency, or a separate WMI problem.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. You can review details in:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If DISM says that the source files could not be found, it may need a matching Windows installation source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not point DISM at a random ISO or another computer’s system folder. Microsoft documents the /Source and /LimitAccess options for this situation.
Repeatedly running SFC without repairing a damaged component store usually does not solve the underlying problem.
When manually comparing Windows repair commands and logs becomes tedious, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.
Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 5 to 30 minutes.
A program can fail while Windows’ own copy of wmitimep.dll is intact. This is more likely when only one application or game displays the error and other WMI-dependent tools work normally.

Repair an installed app
For a Microsoft Store or packaged application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset, understanding that the app’s local data may be removed.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps and locate the program.
- Select Modify, Change, or Repair if the option is provided.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the application vendor’s official installer. A program-specific installer may restore its own files and dependencies, but it should not replace protected Windows files manually.
If the program is a game, use its official launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent installation check before reinstalling the entire game.
Fix 4: Check the file path and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
A file named wmitimep.dll is not automatically trustworthy merely because the name is correct. Location and digital signature matter.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the expected location
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter the following in the address bar:
C:WindowsSystem32wbem
- Look for
wmitimep.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General and Details tabs.
The normal Windows copy is associated with the Windows wbem directory. Be cautious if the only copy is in a temporary folder, a download folder, or an application directory.
Do not delete a copy simply because you find another copy elsewhere. Some applications use private files, and deleting files from an application folder can make that installation worse.

- Right-click
wmitimep.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the listed signature.
- Select Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A missing or invalid signature does not by itself prove malware, especially if the file is damaged, but it is a reason to stop and scan the computer rather than copying the file over it.
Fix 5: Check architecture and dependent modules
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes.
Windows has 32-bit and 64-bit execution contexts. Microsoft has documented x86 and x64 copies of Wmitimep.dll in Windows packages, with architecture-specific file details. That is why a DLL from another Windows build or architecture is not a safe substitute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not assume that every file under System32 is simply a 64-bit file in every situation. Windows uses file-system redirection for some 32-bit processes, and the failing application’s architecture matters.
To check the operating system:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
msinfo32. - Press Enter.
- Check System Type.
To check a running application:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Open the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns if available.
- Add Platform where Windows provides that field.
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wmitimep.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the named DLL. This is especially plausible when the file is present at the expected path and has a valid Microsoft signature.
The correct response is to repair Windows and the affected application, not to collect unrelated DLLs from the internet.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Time needed: 10 minutes to several hours, depending on the scan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the error appeared immediately after malware removal or an antivirus detection, treat it as a security and system-integrity problem.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
wmitimep.dll. - Do not restore the file automatically.
- Confirm its original path and Microsoft signature first.
- Run a Full scan from Scan options.
If your security product quarantined the file from C:WindowsSystem32wbem, restore it only after the file is verified and the security product identifies the detection as a false positive. If the file was found in a temporary or unexpected application directory, leave it quarantined and investigate the program instead.
After the scan, run DISM and SFC again. Malware cleanup can damage system files, while a malicious replacement can cause the same filename to appear in an unsafe location.
Fix 7: Update a driver only when the failure identifies one
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
wmitimep.dll is not a driver file, and installing a driver is not a normal fix for this error. Use Device Manager only when the application’s log or Windows event clearly identifies a damaged device driver or the problem began with a specific hardware component.

Avoid driver-updating websites and unidentified driver packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and does not replace DISM, SFC, or an application reinstall when Windows or the program is the real cause.
Fix 8: Check optional Windows components only when the application requires them
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Do not enable random Windows Features to replace wmitimep.dll. WMI is a Windows management component, not a feature that is normally fixed by installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
If the failing application specifically requires an optional Windows component:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable only the feature documented by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, .NET, or a driver will not normally restore this WMI provider. Those components may be required by a particular application for other reasons, but they are not the correct general remedy for a missing wmitimep.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as the first fix
wmitimep.dll appears to expose registration-related functions, so regsvr32 may technically run against it in some contexts. That does not make this the normal repair method.
WMI providers also involve provider registration and MOF information. COM registration and WMI registration are not interchangeable. A blind command such as:
regsvr32 wmitimep.dll
can produce architecture, permission, or registration errors without repairing the Windows component. Do not use:

Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours.
Use this escalation path:
- Install all pending Windows updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again from an administrator Command Prompt.
- If DISM needs source files, use matching official Windows installation media and the documented
/Sourcemethod. - If the failure began after a recent update or program installation, use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- If Windows remains damaged, perform an in-place repair installation using official Windows media.
- Back up important files before major recovery work.
System Restore is useful when the timing clearly follows a recent change, but it does not replace component repair. An in-place repair reinstalls Windows components while preserving personal files and, depending on the chosen option, applications. Follow Microsoft’s current installation and recovery instructions for the installed edition and architecture.
Why downloading wmitimep.dll is a bad repair
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may be modified or malicious.
- It may belong to a different Windows build.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may lack a valid Microsoft signature.
- Copying it into
System32does not repair WMI or its MOF registration. - The original problem may be a missing dependency or damaged component store.
- Manual copying can interfere with Windows servicing and future updates.
Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Microsoft installation media, and the affected application’s official installer are the safe sources. Microsoft does not provide a universal standalone replacement package for every Windows version of this file.

FAQ
Is wmitimep.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows WMI provider component published by Microsoft and associated with the Windows operating system. Verify the path and digital signature on the affected computer rather than trusting the filename alone.
Where should wmitimep.dll be?
A normal Windows location is:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemwmitimep.dll
The exact path and file details can vary by Windows architecture and servicing state.
Is wmitimep.dll a Visual C++ file?
No. Visual C++ Redistributables are not the normal remedy for this Windows WMI provider.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Manual copying can introduce the wrong version, wrong architecture, malware, and servicing problems. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
Does regsvr32 fix it?
Not normally. This is a WMI provider, and WMI registration involves more than ordinary COM registration. Use the Windows component repair process unless a specific Microsoft-guided procedure requires registration work.
What if only one game or application fails?
Repair or reinstall that program using its official installer or launcher. The program may have a damaged private installation even when Windows’ WMI component is healthy.
What if SFC says it cannot repair files?
Review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, run DISM first and SFC again, then use a matching Windows installation source if DISM needs repair files. If that fails, consider System Restore or an in-place Windows repair.
