wmmfilt.dll is a genuine legacy Microsoft Windows Movie Maker filter component. If Windows says wmmfilt.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to repair the complete Movie Maker installation that originally supplied it, not to copy a replacement DLL into System32.
The file belongs with classic Movie Maker, usually under C:Program FilesMovie Maker. It is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL, Visual C++ runtime file, DirectX component, or .NET file.

If the folder is missing, search for moviemk.exe from File Explorer. Right-click the result, select Open file location, and use that folder as the reference point.
Do not assume that a copy of wmmfilt.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 is correct. Movie Maker historically loaded its filter components from its own installation directory. A file left in System32 can also be the wrong generation or architecture.
The distinction between wmmfilt.dll and wmm2filt.dll matters. Historical Movie Maker 1.x installations used the older filename, while later 2.x installations used files such as wmm2filt.dll. An old wmmfilt.dll can remain after an upgrade without being required by the newer installation. Microsoft documents the Movie Maker installation directory and its filter files in its Movie Maker installation documentation.

You may see any of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because wmmfilt.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because wmmfilt.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading wmmfilt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The file wmmfilt.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: wmmfilt.dll. Please install the application again.”
The wording varies by Windows version, Movie Maker build, and the component displaying the error.
If the message says “The specified module could not be found” even though wmmfilt.dll is visible in the Movie Maker folder, Windows may be unable to load one of its dependencies. The named DLL is not always the missing file. This is another reason that replacing only wmmfilt.dll is an unreliable repair.
A different failure, “Class not registered,” usually points to a DirectShow or COM registration problem. That is more likely to appear while importing or processing media than during the initial Movie Maker launch.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete Movie Maker installation
This is the most appropriate fix when the file is missing, damaged, quarantined, or surrounded by other missing Movie Maker files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck for an available repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Movie Maker or Windows Essentials.
- Select the entry and choose Advanced options, Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what Windows displays.
- Complete the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Movie Maker and test the same project or media file.
On older Windows versions, use this route instead:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Movie Maker or Windows Essentials.
- Choose Change.
- Select the repair option if one is offered.
A successful repair restores the matching program files, supporting filters, registration data, and dependencies together. Movie Maker should launch without the DLL dialog, and media import should reach the next stage instead of failing immediately.

Reinstall from original trusted media
If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstalling and reinstalling the complete matching package is safer than replacing one file.
- Back up your
.mswmmproject files and source video, audio, and image files. - Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove Movie Maker or the Windows Essentials installation.
- Restart the computer.
- Reinstall from original installation media or a trusted copy already associated with that same Movie Maker generation.
- Restart again and test Movie Maker.
Do not mix an old wmmfilt.dll with a newer wmm2filt.dll installation. Movie Maker filters depend on their surrounding files and registration entries.
Microsoft no longer provides Windows Essentials 2012 for download and states that the software is unsupported. Microsoft also warns that websites offering free Movie Maker downloads are not sanctioned Microsoft products. Its Windows Essentials support page explains the current status.
On Windows XP, Movie Maker 2.1 was associated with Windows XP Service Pack 2 and its installation media rather than a modern standalone runtime. That version should be repaired through the matching operating-system or service-pack media, not through a Windows 11 DLL package.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Old Movie Maker components can be removed or quarantined by security software because the application is obsolete or its files are no longer commonly used.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving Movie Maker or
wmmfilt.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect its path.
- Restore the file only if it came from your original, trusted Movie Maker installation.
- Add an exclusion only after confirming the complete installation is trustworthy.
- Run a full scan before launching the program again.
If the file came from an unknown installer or a download site, do not restore it. Remove the questionable installation and rebuild Movie Maker from known-good original media.
Fix 3: Check whether the application is using the wrong architecture
Classic Movie Maker is a 32-bit application. On 64-bit Windows, it normally runs through the 32-bit compatibility layer and should use the files installed with Movie Maker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not try to solve this by copying a 64-bit DLL into the Movie Maker folder. A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit component and matching supporting files. If regsvr32 later reports an architecture mismatch, that is evidence of a registration-tool or file-version problem, not a reason to download another DLL.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Check the executable as follows:
- Right-click
moviemk.exe. - Select Properties.
- Open Details and review the available file information.
- Compare the surrounding Movie Maker files rather than judging one DLL in isolation.
If files from multiple Movie Maker generations are present, uninstalling and reinstalling the complete matching package is the cleaner solution.
Fix 4: Use regsvr32 only for “Class not registered”
regsvr32 does not restore a missing file. It registers a DLL only when that DLL provides the COM entry point DllRegisterServer. Movie Maker’s legacy DirectShow filters can involve COM registration, so this command is relevant only when Movie Maker opens but reports “Class not registered” or fails to find a media filter.
First confirm that the DLL exists in the correct Movie Maker directory and came from the matching installation.
On 64-bit Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt and run the 32-bit registration tool:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesMovie Makerwmmfilt.dll"
On 32-bit Windows, use:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:Program FilesMovie Makerwmmfilt.dll"
To open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the command matching your Windows architecture.
If registration succeeds, test the media import or operation that produced the COM error. If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, registration is not supported by that file. If it reports a module or entry-point error, repair the complete Movie Maker installation instead.
Microsoft explains the behavior of regsvr32, while its DirectShow registration guidance describes why filter registration can matter.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not a dependable source for a legacy Movie Maker DLL, so use them when several unrelated Windows applications also report missing or corrupted system files.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Movie Maker again.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If Movie Maker still reports wmmfilt.dll, return to repairing the Movie Maker installation. Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM instructions provide the supported command sequence.

When manually hunting through component stores and repeating SFC and DISM does not reveal what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the matching Movie Maker package remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to that application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Update Windows and check device drivers for media failures
A Movie Maker import failure is not always a missing DLL. AVI files can depend on codecs and DirectShow components that no longer behave correctly on current Windows. Graphics, audio, chipset, and storage drivers can also affect legacy media software.
Update Windows first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
Then check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not expect a driver update to recreate wmmfilt.dll; this step is for crashes, black previews, audio failures, or media-import problems after Movie Maker itself launches.
If checking hardware vendors one device at a time is becoming guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For a missing Movie Maker DLL, however, reinstalling the complete application is still the primary repair.
What not to do
Do not download a single DLL
Random DLL websites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, the wrong Movie Maker generation, or a file with incompatible exports. Even a genuine-looking replacement may leave missing filters, registry entries, and dependencies untouched.
There is no current official Microsoft standalone download for wmmfilt.dll. Use original Movie Maker installation media or a trusted existing installation, not a generic DLL repository.
Do not copy it into System32
Movie Maker expects its own program directory. Copying a legacy application DLL into a Windows system folder can create conflicts and does not repair the original installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not install unrelated runtimes first
wmmfilt.dll is not identified as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Installing those packages without evidence will not normally restore the Movie Maker filter.
Do not run regsvr32 against a random replacement
Registration cannot repair a missing file, and it can create misleading COM errors when the DLL is the wrong version or does not support self-registration.
If Movie Maker still will not run
Preserve the .mswmm project files and all source media before further troubleshooting. If reinstalling the matching version fails, test the project in the same historical Movie Maker environment, preferably an appropriately isolated virtual machine with copies of the original media.
Best Value
Windows Essentials 2012 is unsupported and unavailable from Microsoft, so running it on Windows 10 or Windows 11 may remain unreliable even after the DLL is restored. If the project cannot be opened safely, migrate the source media and rebuild it in a maintained video editor rather than repeatedly replacing individual Movie Maker files.
FAQ
Is wmmfilt.dll malware?
The genuine file is a legacy Microsoft Movie Maker component. Its location matters: a copy in the original Movie Maker directory is more consistent with the expected installation than an unexplained copy in a temporary folder or system directory. Scan suspicious files and verify the installation source.
Is wmmfilt.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. It was distributed with older Movie Maker installations and is not a protected modern Windows component that SFC normally supplies.
Should I replace it with wmm2filt.dll?
No. The filenames indicate different Movie Maker generations. Reinstall the version that matches moviemk.exe and the surrounding files.
Why does the error remain when the file exists?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be the wrong architecture, or Movie Maker may be using incompatible COM registration. Repair the complete installation instead of copying another DLL.
Can System Restore fix this?
It may help only if a restore point contains the complete, working Movie Maker installation and its registration data. It is not the first choice, and it should not replace backing up project files.
Will reinstalling Windows fix it?
Reinstalling Windows is excessive for a legacy application DLL and may still leave Movie Maker unsupported. Rebuild the matching Movie Maker installation or move the project to a compatible environment first.
