wmpnetwk.exe, the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service processwmpnscfg.exe, which can configure or interact with media sharing- Media streaming and network-library sharing
It is not normally a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or graphics-driver file. Installing those packages will not normally restore this component.
Where should wmpnssci.dll be located?
On a 64-bit Windows installation, the normal 64-bit path is:
C:Program FilesWindows Media Playerwmpnssci.dll
A 32-bit Windows Media Player component on 64-bit Windows may instead use:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

C:Program Files (x86)Windows Media Playerwmpnssci.dll
Do not assume that the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders have specific architecture roles, but the expected location for this DLL is generally the Windows Media Player directory.
Versions and file sizes vary by Windows release, build, and architecture. A particular version or size is not a universal authenticity test.
Is wmpnssci.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. The genuine file is published by Microsoft Corporation and is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system.
The path and digital signature matter. A file named wmpnssci.dll in a temporary folder, Downloads folder, user profile, or unrelated application directory should not be trusted simply because its filename is correct.

C:Program Files (x86)Windows Media Player
- Right-click
wmpnssci.dlland select Properties. - Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature associated with Microsoft.
If the Digital Signatures tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the file is in an unexpected directory, do not copy it into a Windows folder. Run a security scan and repair Windows Media Player instead.
Why Windows reports the DLL as missing
The most common causes are:
- Windows Media Player Legacy is disabled or damaged.
- Media Features were removed during cleanup or troubleshooting.
- Windows 10 or 11 N is missing the Media Feature Pack.
- A Windows update or interrupted installation left components incomplete.
- Antivirus or malware-removal software quarantined the file.
- Windows component-store corruption damaged related files.
- A broken media-sharing registration or service dependency is preventing startup.
- An older third-party application is incorrectly loading the component.
The error does not prove that the file was malware or that the system needs a random replacement DLL.
Fix 1: Repair Windows Media Player

What success looks like
The error is resolved when:
- Windows Media Player opens without the DLL message.
- The Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service starts normally.
wmpnetwk.exeno longer produces a startup error.- Media sharing can be enabled without an error.
If Windows Media Player is still missing after reinstalling the feature, continue with the N-edition check and system repair steps below.
Fix 3: Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit certain media technologies, including Windows Media Player, until the Media Feature Pack is installed.
To check your edition:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read the Windows specifications section.
- Check whether the edition name ends with N.
To install the Media Feature Pack:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features or Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it.
- Select Next.
- Select Install.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, install or enable Windows Media Player through Optional Features if it is still absent.

Do not use a DLL copied from another computer as a substitute for the Media Feature Pack. The feature supplies related media components that need to match your Windows edition and build.
Fix 4: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the DLL is absent from the correct Windows Media Player directory, the file appears damaged, or several Windows features are malfunctioning.
DISM repairs the Windows component source. SFC then checks protected system files using that repaired source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Windows Media Player again.
Run DISM before SFC. Do not close the Command Prompt window while either scan is working.
Interpreting the results
- No integrity violations: Windows did not find protected-file corruption, so continue with the Media Features repair or service troubleshooting.
- Corrupt files were repaired: Restart and test the application.
- Some files could not be repaired: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If the result remains unchanged, use the Windows recovery options described later.
Do not assume SFC will restore this exact DLL on every Windows edition. It repairs files that are part of the installed component set.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a genuine Microsoft file after a detection, cleanup operation, or failed update.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
wmpnssci.dll. - Check the reported file path and detection reason.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- It was located in the expected Windows Media Player directory.
- Its Microsoft digital signature is valid.
- The security product does not continue to identify it as malicious.
- A current full-system scan is clean.
If the file was found in Downloads, a temporary directory, an application folder, or a user profile, do not restore it blindly. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and repair Windows Media Player through Optional Features.
If antivirus repeatedly quarantines the file after a clean feature reinstall, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection with the security vendor. A filename alone is not proof of authenticity.
Fix 6: Address a “Bad Image” error
A “Bad Image” message is different from a simple missing-file message. It can indicate:
- A corrupt DLL
- An incompatible binary
- An architecture mismatch
- A damaged dependency
- A failed update or incomplete feature installation
Do not solve a Bad Image error by downloading a different copy from the internet.

- Run SFC:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart again.
- Confirm that the DLL is in the correct Windows Media Player directory.
- Check its Microsoft digital signature.
A 32-bit component and a 64-bit component must match the program loading them. Do not copy the file between Program Files and Program Files (x86) simply to make an error disappear.
Fix 7: Handle service error 1068
The Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service can fail with:
The dependency service or group failed to start.
This is commonly shown as error 1068. It concerns a service dependency, not necessarily the DLL itself.
First confirm that the required Windows features are installed:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.
- Double-click it.
- Read the Service status and Dependencies tabs.
- Check whether a listed dependency is stopped or disabled.
Do not randomly enable every disabled service. Many services are intentionally manual or disabled.
If the service is stopped, select Start. If it fails, note the exact error and run DISM and SFC. Also check whether Windows Media Player and Media Features are installed.
Media sharing is separate from ordinary Windows file sharing. Disabling or repairing file-sharing settings will not necessarily repair the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service.

Fix 8: Register the DLL only after restoring it
Do not begin with regsvr32. It cannot recreate a missing file, repair a corrupt binary, or replace damaged dependencies.
Registration is a conditional advanced step because this DLL exposes registration functions. Use it only when:
- The file exists in the expected Windows Media Player directory.
- Its Microsoft signature is valid.
- Windows Media Player and Media Features are installed.
- DISM and SFC have completed.
- The service or media-sharing registration still fails.
For the 64-bit path:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Stop the service:
cmd
sc stop WMPNetworkSvc
- Register the DLL:
cmd
regsvr32 "C:Program FilesWindows Media Playerwmpnssci.dll"
- Restart Windows.
- Test media sharing.
For the 32-bit component on 64-bit Windows, use the matching path and 32-bit registration tool:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches%SystemRoot%SysWOW64regsvr32 "C:Program Files (x86)Windows Media Playerwmpnssci.dll"
A successful registration message indicates that the registration entry point ran. It does not prove that the entire Windows Media Player installation is healthy.
If regsvr32 reports that the module could not be loaded, first check the path, architecture, dependencies, and system integrity. Do not repeatedly register different downloaded copies.
Do not use Device Manager for this DLL
Device Manager repairs hardware drivers. wmpnssci.dll is a Windows Media Player component, so updating display, audio, chipset, or network drivers is not the normal solution.
Use Device Manager only when there is a separate hardware symptom, such as missing audio output or a network adapter error:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers it considers stale, avoiding manual version hunting; its free scan identifies findings, while installing drivers requires the full version, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows Media Player.
A driver update will not normally restore wmpnssci.dll unless a separate hardware problem is being misreported alongside the DLL error.
What not to do
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Downloading
wmpnssci.dllfrom a random DLL website - Copying the file into
System32 - Copying the file into
SysWOW64without checking architecture - Replacing the file beside an unrelated program
- Installing Visual C++ or DirectX without an error naming those components
- Running
regsvr32before restoring Windows Media Player - Restoring an antivirus-quarantined file without checking its path and signature
- Using a file from another Windows build or computer
A replacement DLL may have the wrong architecture, version, dependencies, or embedded code. It can also leave the damaged Windows feature untouched.
If the problem began after an update or cleanup
Install pending Windows updates first:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
If the error clearly began after a recent update, cleanup utility, malware-removal operation, or system change, System Restore may be appropriate when a suitable restore point exists:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore.
System Restore should not be the first step for a straightforward missing Optional Feature, but it can help when the failure clearly follows a recent system change.

If nothing has worked
If Windows Media Player will not reinstall and DISM and SFC cannot repair the system, use Windows recovery options.
On supported Windows 11 systems:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, personal files, and settings according to Microsoft’s recovery process.
If that option is unavailable, use an in-place repair installation from official Windows installation media. If the error occurs only inside an old third-party application after Windows Media Player is repaired, repair or reinstall that application as well. The application may be loading the component incorrectly or may have its own damaged installation.

Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation include wmpnssci.dll?
No. Windows Media Player Legacy is an optional feature in Windows 10 and in some Windows 11 editions. Windows N editions also require the Media Feature Pack for the related media technologies.
Should I download wmpnssci.dll separately?
No. Restore it through Windows Media Player, Media Features, the Media Feature Pack when applicable, and Windows repair tools. A random DLL download can create version and architecture problems.
Does wmpnssci.dll belong in System32?
Not by default. Its expected location is generally the Windows Media Player directory under Program Files or Program Files (x86).
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX?
Not for this file alone. Those packages are unrelated unless a separate error specifically identifies a missing runtime or graphics component.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I run regsvr32?
Only after the genuine file exists in the expected location and Windows Media Player has been repaired. Registration cannot restore a missing or corrupt DLL.
What does a 1068 service error mean?
It means that the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service or one of its dependencies failed to start. Check the service dependencies, reinstall Media Features, and run DISM and SFC.
Is a suspicious copy proof of malware?
No, but an unexpected path or invalid Microsoft signature makes the file untrustworthy. Do not restore it automatically. Scan the system and repair the official Windows component.
Why does the error appear in an old program?
The program may be trying to load a Windows Media Player component incorrectly, or its own installation may be damaged. Repair Windows Media Player first, then repair or reinstall the affected program if the problem remains.
