The wording varies by Windows version and the application that requests the file. These messages all indicate that Windows could not load the Windows Media component expected by the program.

The 60-second answer

wmpnssui.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component named Windows Media Player WMPNSS Shell Extensions. It belongs to the legacy Windows Media Player and media-sharing stack, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a hardware driver.

The safest first fix is to reinstall or re-enable Windows Media Player Legacy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • On Windows 11, install it through Settings > Apps > Optional features.
  • On Windows 10, add Windows Media Player through Optional features or enable Media Features in Windows Features.
  • On Windows N editions, install the matching Media Feature Pack instead.
  • Restart Windows after installing the feature.

Do not download a loose copy of wmpnssui.dll and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. The correct Windows feature restores the matching file, supporting components, registration, permissions, and servicing state together.

What owns wmpnssui.dll

The file is part of Microsoft Windows Operating System and is published by Microsoft Corporation. Its description is Windows Media Player WMPNSS Shell Extensions.

The file is associated with the older Windows Media Player shell and media-sharing functionality. A sample file record identifies a path under:

C:Program Files (x86)Windows Media PlayerWMPNSSUI.dll

That is not a universal path. The location, architecture, and file details can vary with the Windows release, installed features, and the application requesting the component. Available file metadata includes a 32-bit sample, so do not assume that every installation uses the same architecture or directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most likely causes are:

  1. Windows Media Player Legacy was removed or disabled.
  2. The computer uses a Windows N edition without the correct Media Feature Pack.
  3. A Windows upgrade or update damaged the component store.
  4. Windows Security quarantined the file.
  5. An older application has an incomplete installation or an incorrect dependency.
  6. A copied or downloaded DLL does not match the process architecture or Windows build.

Fix 1: Reinstall Windows Media Player Legacy

This is the correct first repair for most wmpnssui.dll errors.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Select View features beside Add an optional feature.
  5. Search for Windows Media Player Legacy.
  6. Select it and choose Next.
  7. Select Install.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Start the application that previously displayed the error.

If the feature is already installed, remove it and add it again:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Optional features.
  2. Find Windows Media Player Legacy under installed features.
  3. Select it and choose Remove.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Return to Optional features > View features.
  6. Install Windows Media Player Legacy again.
  7. Restart a second time.

Microsoft documents this feature repair path in its Windows Media Player troubleshooting instructions.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select Optional features.
  5. Choose Add a feature.
  6. Select Windows Media Player.
  7. Choose Install.
  8. Restart Windows.

If Windows 10 does not show the feature in Settings, use Windows Features:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Windows Features.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Expand Media Features.
  5. Select Windows Media Player, or select the entire Media Features entry if it is clear.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Repeat the process and enable the feature again if you removed it during repair.

Test the affected program after the restart. If the program opens without the DLL message, the Windows Media feature was the missing dependency.

Fix 2: Install Media Feature Pack on Windows N

Windows N editions do not include Windows Media Player and related media technologies by default. Installing an ordinary Windows Media Player package is not the correct repair for an N edition.

Windows 11 N

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Optional features.
  4. Choose View features.
  5. Search for Media Feature Pack.
  6. Select it.
  7. Choose Next, then Install.
  8. Restart Windows.

Windows 10 N

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select Optional features.
  5. Choose Add a feature.
  6. Select Media Feature Pack.
  7. Choose Install.
  8. Restart Windows.

Use the Media Feature Pack that Windows offers for the installed edition and release. Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack instructions for Windows N cover the supported installation paths.

After restarting, launch the affected application again. If it still reports wmpnssui.dll, continue with the component repair steps below.

Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use this sequence when Windows Media Player is installed but its files are damaged, when the problem began after an upgrade, or when several Windows components are behaving incorrectly.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the application again.

Do not close the Command Prompt while either scan is running. The SFC result tells you what happened:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no damaged protected files. Continue with application-specific repair if the error remains.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC again. If it still cannot repair the files, use the escalation options below.

Microsoft’s DISM and SFC repair procedure explains this order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running these commands manually is useful, but repeated scans can leave you guessing which repair changed the system. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; its repair actions are completed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows feature repair.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a legitimate Windows component after a detection, a failed update, or a system change. Do not restore the file blindly.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Look for an entry involving WMPNSSUI.dll or Windows Media Player.
  6. Open the detection details.
  7. Confirm that the file is in the expected Windows Media Player location and that the detection is identified as a false positive before considering Restore or Allow on device.

If the issue began immediately after a malware detection, prioritize a full security investigation. A malicious file can use a legitimate filename. Do not override Windows Security merely because the filename looks familiar.

Microsoft explains the available actions and risks in its Protection History guidance. After dealing with the detection, reinstall Windows Media Player Legacy rather than relying on a manually restored file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error

If Windows Media Player is installed and Windows passes DISM and SFC, the failing program may have an incomplete installation or an old dependency declaration.

First determine whether the error appears:

  • Only when starting one older program.
  • When opening Windows Media Player itself.
  • In several unrelated programs.

If only one application fails:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  2. Select the affected application.
  3. Choose Advanced options if available.
  4. Select Repair.
  5. Start the application again.
  6. If Repair does not help, use Reset only if you understand that it removes the application’s custom settings.
  7. If no repair option exists, uninstall the application.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Install the application again from its official installer or original media.
  10. Use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Repair files function if it provides one.

Reinstalling that application is the definitive repair when its own installation is broken. Do not assume that every program mentioning wmpnssui.dll is defective, however. Some older software depends indirectly on Windows Media Player and needs the Windows feature restored first.

Fix 6: Repair Windows Media Player itself

If Windows Media Player is present but does not work correctly, use its application repair controls before making broader changes.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Find Windows Media Player.
  5. Open its menu and select Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test Windows Media Player and the affected program.
  8. If the problem remains, return to the same page and select Reset.

Microsoft states that Reset removes custom settings and preferences but does not remove personal media files or the media library files themselves. If Repair and Reset do not work, remove and reinstall the relevant Windows Media feature through Windows Features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver

A driver is not the owner of wmpnssui.dll, so updating a driver is not a primary fix for this filename. Driver work is appropriate when the same problem includes missing audio devices, disabled playback hardware, device errors, or a recent driver rollback.

  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected audio or media device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  9. If the issue began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and check whether Roll Back Driver is available.

Device Manager cannot recreate a missing Windows Media Player component. Use it only for a separate hardware symptom.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean hunting through model numbers and checking which of several installed drivers is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues; driver installation is completed by the full version, and it is not required to repair wmpnssui.dll.

Why regsvr32 is usually not the answer

regsvr32 registers a DLL only when the DLL includes the appropriate registration entry point. It does not download a missing file, restore Windows Media Player, repair the component store, or correct a mismatched architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available metadata for WMPNSSUI.dll reports registration-related exports, so registration may technically be possible in some builds. That still does not make it the correct first repair. If the file is missing, this command cannot work. If the Windows feature is absent, registration cannot replace the feature.

Do not run a random command copied from a DLL download page. Microsoft explains how DllRegisterServer and regsvr32 work. Restore the Windows feature first, then use registration only when Microsoft or the application vendor specifically requires it for that installation.

Do not download a loose DLL

Avoid websites that offer individual DLL downloads. A downloaded file can be:

  • Malware using a familiar Microsoft filename.
  • The wrong Windows build.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • Unsigned or incorrectly signed.
  • Missing related dependencies.
  • Incompatible with the application that requests it.

Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can also create a second problem while leaving the missing Windows feature unresolved. Copying a DLL from another computer is not a safe substitute either, because Windows builds and component versions can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe sources are Windows Optional Features, the matching Media Feature Pack for Windows N, Windows Update, and the original application’s official installer.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore can help when wmpnssui.dll disappeared immediately after a feature removal, failed update, driver change, or other recent system modification and a valid restore point exists.

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  6. Review the affected programs and drivers.
  7. Start the restore.

System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, updates, or drivers installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft lists this and other recovery choices in its Windows recovery options.

Fix 9: Repair-reinstall Windows

Use a repair reinstall when:

  • The Media Feature Pack or Windows Media Player feature will not install.
  • DISM and SFC cannot repair the component store.
  • Windows Update itself is failing.
  • Several built-in Windows components are damaged.

On supported Windows 11 installations:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now.
  6. Follow the prompts.

Microsoft describes this option as reinstalling the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported. See the Windows Update repair reinstall instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If that option is unavailable, use Microsoft installation media for an in-place repair and carefully choose the option to keep personal files and applications. Back up important data before beginning.

FAQ

Is wmpnssui.dll a legitimate Windows file?

Yes. It is identified as Windows Media Player WMPNSS Shell Extensions, published by Microsoft Corporation as part of Microsoft Windows. A legitimate name alone does not prove that every copy on disk is safe, so check its location and Windows Security status.

Does wmpnssui.dll belong to Visual C++?

No. It belongs to the Windows Media Player and media-sharing component stack. Installing Visual C++ Redistributables is not the evidence-based primary repair.

Do I need DirectX or .NET?

Not for this specific filename. DirectX and .NET may be required by the application that displays the error, but they do not provide wmpnssui.dll.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

The architecture is release- and installation-dependent. Available metadata includes a 32-bit sample, and a 32-bit application may require a 32-bit component. Do not replace the file with a similarly named copy from another Windows build.

Why does only one old program report the error?

That program may depend indirectly on Windows Media Player or may have an incomplete installation. Restore the Windows Media feature first, then repair or reinstall the individual program if it remains the only failure.

Should I register the DLL?

Usually not. regsvr32 cannot restore a missing Windows feature or repair a missing file. Use it only when a documented application repair procedure specifically requires registration and the correct file is already present.

What if the error returns after reinstalling Windows Media Player?

Check Protection History, run DISM followed by SFC, and determine whether the problem is limited to one application. If Windows cannot install the feature or repair its component store, use System Restore or a Windows repair reinstall rather than copying a DLL from another source.
