wmpsrcwp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system component associated with legacy Windows Media Player and DirectShow functionality, not a DLL you should download from a random website. If it is missing or will not load, repair Windows first, then restore the optional media components or repair the specific application reporting the error.
What this file actually does
The file is identified as WMPSrcWp Module and is published by Microsoft Corporation. Historical Windows inventories place it in the Windows system directory and associate it with Windows Media and DirectShow media functionality, including a screen-capture filter.

Despite similar naming, the available evidence does not establish wmpsrcwp.dll as part of the separate Windows Media Services server role. That distinction matters because installing a server streaming role is not the normal answer to a missing desktop DLL.
On older Windows installations, the file appeared in locations such as:

The names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files.
Historical inventories list both 32-bit and 64-bit copies, including older Windows-era builds. Those version numbers are historical records, not a universal version target for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Do not use them to choose a replacement download.
The error may appear in several forms:
- “The program can’t start because wmpsrcwp.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because wmpsrcwp.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting wmpsrcwp.dll.”
- “Error loading wmpsrcwp.dll.”
- “wmpsrcwp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
The last message does not always mean the named file itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Causes and symptoms at a glance
| What you notice | Likely cause | Best first repair |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears after an update, rollback, or interrupted restart | Damaged or incomplete Windows servicing | Complete Windows Update, then run DISM and SFC |
| Windows Media Player or an older media program stopped working | Media component disabled or removed | Enable Windows Media Player Legacy |
| You have a Windows N or KN edition | Media technologies are intentionally omitted | Install the matching Media Feature Pack |
| Only one game or application reports the error | Damaged application files or old media integration | Repair, verify, or reinstall that application |
| Your security software recently quarantined a file | Quarantine or malware cleanup | Check quarantine and verify the file before restoring it |
| The file exists but Windows says it cannot load it | Missing dependency, corruption, or architecture mismatch | Repair Windows components and inspect the application |
| Several Windows files are failing | Broader system or disk corruption | DISM/SFC, then recovery or an in-place repair if needed |
| The problem started after a driver or capture-device change | A related media or capture component may be damaged | Check the device and application, but do not assume the DLL is a driver |
Fix 1: Complete Windows Update, then restart
A missing protected Windows file is often caused by an incomplete update, rollback, or servicing operation. Start with Windows Update before replacing anything manually.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, open the program that produced the error. If it starts normally, the missing component was probably restored or the pending servicing operation completed.
If the message remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly reinstall unrelated runtimes before checking Windows itself.
Fix 2: Repair protected Windows files with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a repair source.

Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.
When DISM completes successfully, restart Windows. Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer again.
What the result means
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and repaired them, test the affected program. A repaired wmpsrcwp.dll problem should no longer appear if this file was the actual damaged component.
If SFC reports that it did not find any integrity violations, the problem may be:
- A missing dependency of
wmpsrcwp.dll - A damaged application rather than Windows
- An incompatible legacy application
- A Windows media feature that is disabled
- A file in the wrong location or wrong architecture
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run DISM again, followed by SFC. If the same files remain unrepaired, save the CBS log information and move to the recovery steps later in this guide.
If you prefer not to keep hunting through component versions and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problem and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct first repair for a protected system DLL.
Fix 3: Enable Windows Media Player Legacy
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Windows Media Player Legacy is an optional feature. An older application may expect media components that are not currently enabled.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Choose View features beside Add an optional feature.
- Search for Windows Media Player Legacy.
- Select it.
- Choose Next, then Add.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose Manage optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Find Windows Media Player.
- Select it and choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected application.
Microsoft changes the exact labels between releases, so the feature may be listed slightly differently. If you cannot find it, confirm your Windows edition before assuming the feature is unavailable.
This repair is appropriate when the error began after removing Windows Media Player, disabling optional Windows features, or installing a stripped-down Windows configuration. It is not necessary to install Windows Media Services merely because the filename contains “WMP” or resembles a server component.

Windows N editions intentionally omit Windows Media Player and related media technologies. A missing media component on an N edition may therefore be an expected feature omission rather than ordinary file corruption.
Check your edition
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at Windows specifications.
- Check whether the edition name includes N.
On Windows 10, open Settings > System > About and review the same Windows edition information.

Install the Media Feature Pack
- Open Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Apps > Optional features.
- On Windows 10, select Apps > Apps & features > Manage optional features.
- Choose View features or Add a feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select the package matching your installed Windows release.
- Choose Install.
- Restart Windows, even if Windows does not prompt you to do so.
- Test the application again.
Do not install a Media Feature Pack intended for a different release or architecture. If the package is not offered, install pending Windows updates first and check the edition again.
If the computer uses a regular Home, Pro, or Enterprise edition rather than N, this step is generally not the right repair. Use Windows Media Player Legacy and DISM/SFC instead.
Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the program showing the error
If only one game or application reports wmpsrcwp.dll, the application may have damaged media integration or may be too old for the current Windows installation. Do not assume that copying a DLL into that program’s folder is the solution.
First identify whether Windows itself can use its media features:
- Open Windows Media Player Legacy if it is installed.
- Play a local media file.
- If Windows Media Player works but one application fails, focus on that application.
- If multiple media programs fail, return to Windows component repair and optional features.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- Otherwise uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
For a game launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair command where available. That restores the game’s own files without mixing them with Windows system files.
If reinstalling the application fixes the error, the cause was probably its damaged integration rather than a universally missing Windows DLL. If the installer produces the same error, repair Windows components and confirm that the application supports the installed Windows release.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fix 6: Check security quarantine carefully
Antivirus software may quarantine a system file after detecting a modification, or malware cleanup may remove a file that was genuinely damaged. Do not restore a quarantined copy automatically.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
wmpsrcwp.dll. - Check the recorded path, detection name, and action.
- If the file was outside the normal Windows directories, do not restore it merely because the filename is familiar.
- Run a full scan.
- If you use another security product, inspect its quarantine and scan history as well.
A legitimate system copy should be in a normal Windows system location and should identify Microsoft as its signer when its digital signature can be checked. A copy in a random download folder, temporary directory, or unrelated application folder deserves investigation.
If Windows Security removed the file, use DISM/SFC or the appropriate Windows optional feature to restore it. That is safer than placing the quarantined binary back manually.
Fix 7: Check architecture and file location
A 64-bit installation may contain both 64-bit and 32-bit system components. The folder names do not mean that every program should use the same copy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use these checks:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
- Open File Explorer.
- Check
C:WindowsSystem32. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not move, rename, or replace files in either folder while Windows is running normally.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows may use the compatibility component in SysWOW64. A native 64-bit process generally uses the system component in System32. The correct file must match the process and Windows build.
Do not use an old 32-bit copy to replace a 64-bit component. Do not use a historical Windows 7 file simply because its filename matches. Restore the component through Windows servicing or Optional Features.
Fix 8: Update or repair related drivers only when symptoms point there
wmpsrcwp.dll is not established as a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET runtime file. Installing those packages at random is not an evidence-based repair.
A driver check is reasonable when the error appeared immediately after changing a webcam, capture card, display adapter, or other media device, especially if Device Manager also shows a warning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Cameras, Sound, video and game controllers, and Display adapters.
- Right-click the device associated with the failure.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device status error.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Choose Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began after a driver update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when that option is available. If Device Manager shows no related warning and the error names only wmpsrcwp.dll, return to DISM/SFC and media-feature repair rather than forcing a driver change.
When manually matching drivers across several capture or audio devices becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace repairing Windows or reinstalling an application that owns the failure.

You may find advice to run:
regsvr32 wmpsrcwp.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft does not identify wmpsrcwp.dll as a file users should manually register.

Recommended Free Tools
Use DISM, SFC, Optional Features, or the original application installer instead. Registration will not restore a missing dependency, correct a wrong-architecture binary, or repair a damaged Windows component store.
Do not download and copy this DLL
Avoid DLL archive sites and unsolicited “DLL fixer” installers. A downloaded file can be:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Modified or malicious
- Missing its own dependencies
- Placed in a folder where it creates a second, confusing failure
Copying a known-good file can be appropriate only in controlled administrative recovery, using a matching Windows build and a verified source. It is not the normal consumer repair path.
Use these sources instead:
- Windows Update
- Windows Optional Features
- Media Feature Pack for Windows N editions
- DISM and SFC
- The original application’s official installer or repair function
If SFC still cannot repair the file

- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs before confirming.
If Windows remains damaged after these steps, an in-place repair installation using installation media that matches the installed release can rebuild Windows while preserving personal files and applications when the setup offers that choice. Back up important data first and follow the setup prompts carefully.
FAQ
Is wmpsrcwp.dll malware?
The filename itself is a legitimate Microsoft Windows component. That does not make every copy with that name safe. Check its location, digital signature, and security history. A copy outside normal Windows or application locations should be scanned and investigated.
Is it part of Windows Media Player or Windows Media Services?
It is associated with legacy Windows Media Player and DirectShow functionality. Windows Media Services is a separate Windows Server role, and the similar names should not be treated as proof that the desktop DLL belongs to that server role.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShould I enable Windows Media Player Legacy?
Yes, when an older media application reports the error and the feature is absent or disabled. Enable it through Optional Features, restart, and test again.
Do I need the Media Feature Pack?
Only if the installed edition is Windows N or KN, or Windows specifically offers that package for the edition. Regular Windows editions normally use their built-in media features instead.
Will copying the file into a game folder fix the problem?
Usually not. It can create a version or architecture mismatch and hide the real cause. Verify or reinstall the game through its official launcher or installer.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET repair it?
There is no reliable evidence that those redistributables install wmpsrcwp.dll. Install them only when the affected application specifically requires them and its official documentation identifies that requirement.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if the file exists but the error says “specified module could not be found”?
A dependency of wmpsrcwp.dll may be missing, or the application may be loading the wrong architecture. Repair Windows, confirm the application’s compatibility, and inspect Event Viewer rather than downloading another copy of the named file.
What information should I provide if the error continues?
Record the exact error text, the program that displays it, whether it appears at startup or only during media playback, your Windows edition and system type, whether the file exists in System32 or SysWOW64, recent updates or security quarantine events, and the final DISM/SFC results.
