Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →wmvsdecd.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows media component called the Windows Media Video 9 Screen Decoder. When wmvsdecd.dll is missing, Windows or an application usually needs its media components repaired rather than an isolated DLL downloaded from the internet.
What this file actually does
wmvsdecd.dll decodes Windows Media Screen video streams using the older MSS1 format and the later MSS2 format. It can operate as a DirectX Media Object or a Media Foundation Transform, allowing Windows applications and media players to process certain screen-capture WMV files.
Microsoft identifies Wmvsdecd.dll as the implementing DLL in its Windows Media Video 9 Screen Decoder documentation.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, .NET component, or ordinary application library. It belongs to the Windows media and codec subsystem and is normally protected by Windows servicing.

The exact build depends on the Windows release, architecture, language, and installed updates. Historical records include both 32-bit and 64-bit builds, but you should not replace a current Windows file with an older version simply because its name matches.
Causes and symptoms
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Several programs cannot play media | Corrupted or deleted Windows components | Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC |
| The problem began after a clean installation | Windows N or KN lacks media features | Install Media Feature Pack |
| Only one game or program fails | Incomplete application installation | Repair or verify that application |
| The error began after antivirus detection | Quarantined or deleted system file | Review Protection History |
| “Bad image,” error 193, or “not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong architecture or damaged binary | Remove manually copied files and repair Windows |
| The file exists but playback still fails | Different codec, permissions, registration, or unsupported media | Check the application and media stream |

1. Install Windows updates and restart
Windows updates can restore serviced system components and repair compatibility problems.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the affected application or media file again.
On Windows 10, the path is Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the error appeared immediately after an update, do not begin by downloading an older DLL. First complete the update process, restart, and continue with the repair steps below if necessary.
2. Check whether Windows is an N or KN edition
Windows 10 and Windows 11 N editions omit certain media technologies. A clean installation of an N or KN edition can therefore leave applications unable to play Windows Media content.
To check the edition:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Check the edition shown in the About Windows dialog.
You can also open Settings → System → About and inspect Windows specifications. If the edition name includes N or KN, install the matching official Media Feature Pack:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Optional features.
- Click View features beside Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and click Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows.
Use the official Media Feature Pack instructions for Windows 10 and 11 N. On older Windows releases, the package must match the exact Windows version.
Do not install Media Feature Pack on ordinary Home, Pro, or Enterprise editions unless Windows identifies the system as an N or KN edition. It is not a universal repair for every wmvsdecd.dll error.
3. Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
If the file is missing from its protected Windows location, or several applications have media failures, use Microsoft’s repair sequence. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then uses that repaired store to restore protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Click Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. It can appear paused for a while. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the program again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, the wmvsdecd.dll error may be resolved. If it reports that it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart and run the commands again.

If DISM reports that the repair source cannot be found, use matching Windows installation media as a repair source. Do not substitute a DLL from another computer or a download site. Microsoft documents the supported DISM and System File Checker repair process.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be frustrating. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what needs attention; its full version performs repairs, but Windows servicing remains the appropriate route for a protected Microsoft DLL.
4. Repair or verify the affected application
If only one game, media player, or older program reports the error, the application installation may be incomplete even though Windows itself is healthy.
Look for the program’s built-in repair option:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
For a game launcher, use its Verify files, Verify integrity, or equivalent command. The exact wording varies by launcher.
If repair is unavailable:
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official publisher or store.
- Install it again.
- Apply the application’s current updates.
The application may depend on Windows media components without including its own copy of the decoder. Reinstalling the program is useful when its files, configuration, or dependencies are damaged, but it does not replace Windows component repair.
5. Check antivirus quarantine
If the failure started after Microsoft Defender or another antivirus product detected a file, inspect the detection before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the relevant detection.
- Check the path, detection name, publisher, and available signature information.
Restore the file only when you have confirmed that it is the genuine Microsoft Windows component and the detection is demonstrably false. If the detection is uncertain, leave the item quarantined, run a full scan, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.

If antivirus repeatedly removes wmvsdecd.dll, investigate the detection and the system rather than repeatedly restoring the file. Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance.
6. Check the file location and architecture
On supported Windows installations, the protected 64-bit system copy is commonly associated with:
C:WindowsSystem32
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit copy is normally associated with:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
These names are confusing: System32 commonly contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Exact locations can vary by Windows release and architecture.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA 32-bit application needs the 32-bit media component. A 64-bit application needs the 64-bit component. A file with the right name but the wrong architecture, build, language, dependencies, or signature is not a valid repair.
Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the application or copy one from another computer. That can cause a wrong-version or unsigned installation and may replace a newer patched file with an older vulnerable build.
7. Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs specifically designed to implement DllRegisterServer.

Some historical builds may expose registration-related functions, but manually registering the file does not restore a missing or corrupt binary and can create incorrect codec registration. Use regsvr32 only when a specific Microsoft or application-vendor procedure explicitly requires it.
For a normal wmvsdecd.dll error, Windows Update, Media Feature Pack where applicable, DISM, SFC, and application repair are safer choices.
8. Consider System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began after a registry cleaner, debloating script, cleanup utility, major update, or other system change, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if offered.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Next, review the affected programs, and click Finish.
System Restore changes system files, settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what to expect.
9. Update drivers only when diagnosis points there
A graphics or media-driver problem can affect playback, but drivers are not the normal source of wmvsdecd.dll. Update them only if Device Manager shows a warning, playback fails across several applications, or the issue clearly began after a driver change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and, if relevant, Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not uninstall a working driver merely because the DLL error names media. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the full version installs updates, but driver repair will not replace a missing Windows media component when the component itself is damaged.
Advanced diagnosis when the file exists
If wmvsdecd.dll exists but the application still fails:
- Confirm whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Test the same media in another supported application.
- Check whether the file is accessible under the affected Windows account.
- Test with a new Windows user profile if only one account fails.
- Check the application’s own logs and configuration.
- Consider a missing container or parser component, DRM restriction, sandbox permission, or unsupported media stream.
- Determine whether the file actually uses
MSS1orMSS2; the decoder is not a general-purpose solution for every WMV format.
Windows Media Player can report that a codec is missing even when the decoder file is present. The file may be inaccessible, improperly registered, unsuitable for the media stream, or accompanied by another missing component.
Frequently asked questions
Is wmvsdecd.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component. A copy found in an unusual application directory, lacking a valid Microsoft signature, or repeatedly detected by antivirus should be investigated rather than trusted automatically.
Recommended Free Tools
Which Windows versions contain it?
Microsoft’s original decoder documentation lists Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 API requirements. Later Windows releases also contain compatible Windows media components, although builds and behavior vary by edition and architecture.
Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Either is possible. Windows has supplied both architectures. The correct copy depends on the Windows installation and the application calling it.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually not. Those packages do not normally restore this Windows media component. Use Windows Update, Media Feature Pack for N or KN editions, DISM, SFC, or application repair instead.
Should I download wmvsdecd.dll separately?
No. An isolated download can contain malware or the wrong architecture and version. Microsoft does not provide a current standalone official wmvsdecd.dll download. Restore it through Windows servicing or repair the affected application.
