The short answer: minimum versus recommended PHP
There are three different answers to “what PHP version does WooCommerce require,” depending on what you mean by require:

For a store you maintain now, PHP 8.3 or later is the sensible target. It satisfies the current documentation, clears the announced PHP 8.1 floor with room to spare, and avoids treating PHP 8.1 as a long-term destination when WooCommerce itself recommends a newer release.
The future date is a plan rather than a guaranteed release day. WooCommerce changed the schedule once in September 2026, so confirm the latest developer announcement before making a coordinated upgrade.

WooCommerce’s PHP requirement timeline
The transition is staged rather than an immediate cutoff. This is what each planned WooCommerce release means for a store running an older PHP version.

WooCommerce’s initial 8 September 2026 proposal targeted WooCommerce 11.5 and January 2027. A 29 September 2026 update moved the change to WooCommerce 11.6 and February 2027. Because both the version and month changed within one month, treat February 2027 as the current plan, not a fixed promise.
Which PHP versions meet each goal?

The table separates compatibility from advice. A version can be accepted by WooCommerce without being the version you should choose for a new hosting configuration. PHP 8.1 is the planned minimum, not a recommendation to stop there.
Why upgrading before the cutoff is safer
Waiting until an enforced floor arrives compresses several compatibility checks into the same maintenance window as a major WooCommerce update. Upgrading earlier lets you identify PHP incompatibilities while your current WooCommerce version is still updateable and gives you time to fix a theme or extension without rushing a live checkout.

The notice introduced in WooCommerce 11.3 is deliberately non-blocking. A store on PHP 7.4 or 8.0 can dismiss it and continue updating through WooCommerce 11.5, but that temporary ability should be treated as a migration window, not evidence that the older runtime will remain supported indefinitely.
How to check the PHP version your store is actually using
Check inside WordPress
- Sign in to the WordPress administrator area.
- Open Tools and then Site Health.
- Select the Info tab and expand the Server section. Record the PHP version shown there.
- For WooCommerce-specific diagnostics, open WooCommerce and then Status. Confirm that the system information reports the same runtime.
Use the value reported by the site itself, not the version installed on your desktop or the PHP version shown by a separate command-line account. Hosts can run different PHP versions for different domains, subdomains or command-line processes.

Check your hosting control panel
Most managed hosting dashboards provide a domain-level PHP selector. Look for a menu labelled PHP, PHP Manager, Select PHP Version or similar, then identify the version assigned to the domain serving WordPress. If no selector is available, ask the host which PHP runtime is attached to the production domain and whether the change requires a support ticket.
Some providers do not expose the switch to customers. That is why checking the panel before the WooCommerce 11.3 warning appears is useful: you can discover the provider’s process while the store still has time for testing.

How to upgrade a WooCommerce store to PHP 8.3 or newer
The exact control-panel labels vary by host, but the operational sequence is consistent.
- Inventory the store. Note the WordPress, WooCommerce, theme and extension versions, payment gateways, shipping integrations, scheduled jobs and any custom PHP. Pay particular attention to abandoned or rarely updated extensions.
- Create a recoverable backup. Keep a copy of both the database and the complete WordPress files, including uploads and configuration. Confirm that you know how to restore it rather than assuming a backup exists.
- Use staging when available. Clone the store to a staging URL and assign PHP 8.3 there first. A staging checkout can reveal errors without interrupting customers.
- Change the staging runtime. In the host’s PHP selector, choose PHP 8.3 or a newer version supported by your host. Save or apply the setting, then reload the site.
- Exercise real store paths. Test administrator login, product and variation pages, cart, coupons, customer registration, shipping calculation, taxes, payment authorization, order emails, refunds and any subscription or booking workflow you use.
- Review diagnostics. Check WooCommerce status, WordPress Site Health, server error logs and the PHP error log. A blank page, 500 response or failed checkout usually indicates a PHP compatibility problem in a plugin, theme or custom snippet rather than a WooCommerce requirement problem by itself.
- Fix or isolate incompatible code. Update the extension or theme, remove obsolete custom code, or temporarily deactivate the component that produces the error. If a payment or fulfillment extension cannot run on the target PHP version, contact its developer before changing production.
- Schedule the production switch. Choose a low-order period, notify anyone who manages orders, and ensure maintenance or rollback instructions are available.
- Switch production and monitor. Change the production domain to PHP 8.3 or newer, clear relevant caches, place a controlled test order, and watch logs and failed-payment reports closely.
- Roll back only as a short-term recovery. If the store fails, return to the previous PHP version while preserving the error details. Treat rollback as incident recovery; complete the compatibility fix rather than leaving the store permanently on the older runtime.
What to do if your host only offers PHP 7.4 or 8.0
First ask whether a newer PHP version is available but disabled for your account or domain. Some hosts require a support request, a plan change or migration to a newer server stack. Give the support team the domain, the PHP version you need and the WooCommerce roadmap: PHP 8.1 is planned as the minimum for WooCommerce 11.6.
If the host cannot provide PHP 8.1 or newer, do not upgrade the store by simply forcing WooCommerce 11.6 later. Move the site to infrastructure that supports the required runtime, and perform the migration on staging before changing DNS or production settings.
Remaining on PHP 7.4 or 8.0 does not stop updates immediately. WooCommerce 11.3’s notice is dismissible, and those stores can update through 11.5. It does, however, leave a finite window to arrange hosting, test extensions and schedule the change.

How to interpret conflicting advice online
Hosting and blog pages currently give different answers: some list PHP 7.4, others PHP 8.1, and others PHP 8.3 as the “minimum.” These statements can reflect different dates, products or editorial assumptions. For the requirement itself, use the official WooCommerce documentation and developer announcements:
- The official documentation establishes the current “PHP 7.4 and above” floor.
- The official recommendation is PHP 8.3 or greater.
- The developer announcement establishes the planned PHP 8.1 floor for WooCommerce 11.6.
Do not treat a third-party claim that says “8.3 minimum” as proof that WooCommerce currently blocks PHP 8.1 or 7.4. Conversely, a page that still says 7.4 is sufficient may not reflect the announced 11.6 change. Check the publication date and compare it with the latest WooCommerce developer post before making a production decision.

Compatibility checks beyond the PHP number
PHP is only one layer of a WooCommerce stack. Before switching versions, check that your WordPress core, active theme, payment and shipping extensions, caching layer, server modules and custom snippets support the target runtime. A store can satisfy WooCommerce’s PHP requirement and still fail because an extension uses deprecated PHP behavior or because the host’s newer stack changes an unrelated server setting.
Keep a written list of extensions and their owners. Test the paths that generate revenue rather than relying solely on the WordPress dashboard loading. In particular, verify payment return URLs, webhooks, scheduled actions and transactional email, which may run outside the page you use for a quick visual check.

Planning around WooCommerce 11.6
Use the announced February 2027 milestone as a planning deadline, not as a reason to wait until release week. A practical schedule is:
- Now: identify the production PHP version and ask the host whether PHP 8.3 is available.
- Before WooCommerce 11.3: test PHP 8.3 on staging and begin resolving extension issues.
- During the 11.3–11.5 transition: complete the production switch while updates still work on PHP 7.4 or 8.0.
- Before adopting 11.6: verify that production is on PHP 8.1 or newer; PHP 8.3 or newer is the preferred target.
Because WooCommerce has already revised the target from 11.5/January 2027 to 11.6/February 2027, recheck the latest official developer announcement when you set the final maintenance date. The exact release day has not been confirmed.
Bottom line for store owners
PHP 7.4 is the current WooCommerce minimum, but it is a transition position. PHP 8.1 will become the planned floor with WooCommerce 11.6 in February 2027, while WooCommerce recommends PHP 8.3 or newer today. Check the runtime attached to your live domain, test PHP 8.3 on staging, and complete the host change before the 11.3 warning turns the migration into a last-minute task.
