What Woody’s Secret does
According to the fan-maintained Stardew Valley Wiki’s item entry, the book’s primary effect is: “Felled trees have a 5% chance to yield double the wood.” Reading additional copies awards 100 Foraging experience. The 5% figure is the game effect as the wiki describes it. It has not been independently measured by us or confirmed in an official game source, so treat it as the stated value rather than a tested result.

How to get it
The reported acquisition routes are chopping trees and the rotating Bookseller. The two routes differ sharply in how likely they are to pay off, so it helps to know which one you are relying on.
Chopping trees
The Stardew Valley Wiki reports a 0.03% chance for the book to drop from a chopped tree. That chance rises by 0.001% for each tree chopped until the book is acquired. A drop cannot occur before a minimum of 20 trees have been chopped. These precise rates come from that single fan wiki entry and have not been verified against an official source, so confirm them against the version you are playing before relying on them.

The Bookseller
The fan-maintained HundoDex tracker, which describes itself as an unofficial Stardew Valley 1.6 tracker, lists the Bookseller price as 20,000g and says the book appears in the rotation from Year 3 onward. The Stardew Valley Wiki separately reports an approximate 9% chance that the book is purchasable from the Bookseller after Year 3. That is a wiki estimate, not an official rate, and it is not guaranteed in any given year.
| Route | Reported availability | Source and status |
|---|---|---|
| Chopping trees | 0.03% per chopped tree, rising 0.001% per tree; minimum 20 trees before a drop | Stardew Valley Wiki; single fan-wiki entry, not officially verified |
| Bookseller | 20,000g; in rotation from Year 3; approximately 9% chance of being offered after Year 3 | HundoDex (unofficial 1.6 tracker) for price and rotation; Stardew Valley Wiki for the approximate chance |
Which version and what is uncertain
The Bookseller price and rotation timing come from a tracker aimed at Stardew Valley 1.6, so they may not match earlier versions. The drop and shop odds are the least certain figures in this article. Both are fan-maintained estimates and can change with game updates.
Other uses of the title
The phrase “Woody’s secret” is also the title of an episode of the animated series The Fox Badger Family. Nothing in that episode relates to the Stardew Valley book. If you arrived here looking for the TV episode, this page does not cover it.

- To keep the tree-chopping route going, keep chopping. The odds rise with each tree, but a drop still requires at least 20 trees.
- Check the Bookseller stock after Year 3 in your own save. The approximate 9% chance means the book may not appear at all.
- Budget 20,000g if you plan to buy it, since that is the price HundoDex lists.
No physical product, accessory, or companion item is associated with Woody’s Secret. It exists only as an in-game book.
