A Wordle guess must be an accepted five-letter word, but it does not have to be eligible as the answer. For repeated letters, the game accounts for exact matches first, then marks only as many remaining copies as the answer contains. Sharing is available in Discord’s licensed Wordle Activity; its help page does not establish exactly what the current New York Times website shares.
What words are valid guesses in Wordle?
Wordle gives you six tries, and each guess must be a valid five-letter word. “Valid” means the game recognizes the entry; it does not mean the entry can be that day’s solution. The American Mathematical Society’s June 2022 explanation describes a larger set of accepted guesses divided into possible answers and other guesses. Can a guess be accepted but not be the answer?
Yes. Wordle has a broader list of accepted guesses and a smaller pool of possible answers, so a word may be accepted without being eligible as the solution.

A November 7, 2022 report by The Washington Post said the New York Times had introduced a curated answer list while leaving the larger English-word dictionary of valid guesses uncurated. The article noted that some plural forms could be accepted as guesses but excluded from answers under the policy it described. That is a dated account; it does not establish whether any specific word is eligible today. The Washington Post’s 2022 report.
Can Wordle have repeated letters?
Yes. A five-letter answer can contain the same letter more than once, and a guess can also include duplicates. The colors are assigned by matching letters in this order:

- Letters in the correct position are marked green first.
- Those exact matches are removed from the letters still available to match.
- Each remaining guessed copy is marked yellow only if the answer still has an unmatched copy of that letter. If not, it is gray.
The American Mathematical Society illustrates the rule with answer DECOY and guess ODDER: because DECOY contains only one D, no more than one of the two Ds in the guess can be marked as present. The exact-position-first rule explains why duplicate feedback can depend on where a matching letter appears, not just how many times it occurs in the guess.
Why did one of my repeated letters turn gray?
The answer contains fewer copies of that letter than your guess has left to match. Wordle marks exact-position matches first, then marks only remaining copies that are still present in the answer. Any extra unmatched copy turns gray.

How do I share my Wordle results?
Discord’s help page says that after completing the daily Wordle in its licensed Wordle Activity, players can press Share to share their score with friends. It also says the Activity’s daily answer matches the New York Times game for that day. This documents Discord’s Activity, not the precise share output of the current New York Times website. The available official documentation does not specify exactly what the NYT website’s current share includes or establish its spoiler behavior. It therefore cannot confirm that the website always produces a particular tile grid, or that a shared result excludes every clue or spoiler. Check the share preview in the interface you are using before posting if revealing the answer would matter to your audience.
