If a WordPress featured image is missing, first identify where it disappears: the editor, the theme template, the generated thumbnail, the browser’s CSS layout, or a cache/loading layer. Assigning an image to a post does not guarantee that every template will output it. Work through those layers in order and you can usually fix the problem without changing unrelated content.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers the current block-editor, Site Editor, classic-theme and hybrid-theme paths, including missing controls, blank thumbnails, incorrect crops, stale pages and theme or plugin conflicts.

Start with the failure layer
Open the affected post in an administrator account, confirm an image is selected in the Post settings panel, then view the published URL in a private browser window. Compare what you see with the table below before changing code.
| What you observe | Likely layer | First check | Typical scope and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Featured Image control is absent in the editor | Editor support or screen configuration | Screen Options, theme support and post-type support | Usually site-wide; settings are reversible and low risk |
| The image is assigned but absent from the live page | Template or theme visibility | Single, archive or homepage template | Can affect many posts; template edits may change the whole layout |
| An image element exists but returns 404 or the wrong file | Media derivative or URL generation | src, srcset and the requested thumbnail file |
Regeneration affects media files, not post assignments |
| The image loads in source but looks blank, tiny or badly cropped | CSS or block presentation | Computed width, height, overflow, aspect ratio and visibility | CSS changes can alter every card using the same selector |
| The old image remains after you replace it | Browser, plugin, CDN or hosting cache | Private-window test and cache purge | Clearing cache is reversible; disabling optimization can affect performance |
| The result changes when a theme or plugin is disabled | Conflict | Controlled one-at-a-time reactivation | May affect site behavior while testing; document each change |
Do not regenerate thumbnails or edit CSS until you know which layer failed. A regenerated file cannot make a template that never outputs an image suddenly display one, and a template edit cannot repair a missing derivative that produces a 404.

When the Featured Image box is missing
Check Screen Options first
In the post editor, open Screen Options (the panel at the top of the editing screen) and enable Featured Image if it is listed. Screen Options only controls the interface for your user account; enabling it does not add support that the theme or post type lacks.
Verify the theme declares support
WordPress themes must declare support for the Featured Image function before the Featured Image interface appears on the Edit screen. In a classic or hybrid theme, support is normally declared in the theme setup code:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' );
The declaration belongs in the active theme’s setup routine, not in a random template file. If you are editing a child theme, add or retain the support declaration in the child theme’s setup code and test after switching themes. A parent theme can also provide support; the important point is that the active theme must expose it.
Confirm the post type supports thumbnails
Featured images are enabled per post type. Posts may support them while a custom post type, page, or a plugin-created content type does not. When registering a custom post type, the supports array must include thumbnail:
'supports' => array( 'title', 'editor', 'thumbnail' )
If the post type was registered without that support, ask whoever maintains its registration to add it, then reload the editor. Do not assume that a missing panel is a media-library problem; the image can be perfectly valid while the content type simply has no thumbnail support.
Block-theme interface differences
Block themes still use a Post Featured Image value, but its presentation is often controlled in the Site Editor. If the Post settings panel is confusing or the front-end image is missing, open Appearance > Editor and inspect the template used by the content. The Post Featured Image block can be placed in a single-post, archive or homepage template. The exact panels vary by WordPress version and theme, but the principle is the same: editor support controls assignment, while the template controls output.

- After replacing an image, click Update or Publish. A selection made in the editor is not necessarily stored until the post is saved.
- Check the post status and visibility. A private, password-protected or scheduled revision may not be the page you are testing.
- Use the media attachment’s original file as a sanity check. If it opens in the Media Library but not through the published page, continue with template, derivative or CSS checks.
Make the active template render the image
A featured image is metadata attached to a post. It does not force every theme layout to display that metadata. The template serving the URL must contain an image block or PHP output, and it may have its own visibility settings.
Block themes: inspect the Site Editor template
- Go to Appearance > Editor.
- Open Templates and select the template that actually serves the page: commonly Single for an individual post, Archive for category or tag listings, and Home for the posts index.
- In the template canvas, select the area where the image should appear. If no image is present, insert the Post Featured Image block.
- In the block settings, check the link, width, height, aspect ratio, focal point and visibility options. A block can be present but constrained to a zero-height or hidden region.
- Save the template, then refresh a published post that has an assigned image.
Different templates can produce different results for the same post. An image may appear on the single-post page but not on an archive because the archive template lacks a Post Featured Image block, or because that block is hidden at a particular responsive breakpoint.
Classic and hybrid themes: check theme and Customizer options
Classic and hybrid themes generally render featured images from PHP template files, while their visibility may be exposed under Appearance > Customize or a theme-specific options screen. Look for controls labelled Featured image, Post thumbnail, Show on single posts, Show in archives, Blog layout or similar. A theme can intentionally show images in cards while hiding them at the top of single posts, or do the reverse.
If a theme option says the image is enabled but the page still has no output, inspect the HTML source or developer tools. If there is no <img> element at all, the template is not rendering it; changing crop settings or clearing a browser cache will not solve that absence.
Template code and conditional logic
Developers commonly render a featured image with a function such as the_post_thumbnail(), often inside a conditional that checks whether a post has a thumbnail. A template may also request a named custom size or suppress output for certain post types, categories or layout modes. If you maintain the theme, trace the template hierarchy and the loop used for the failing URL before editing. A change to a shared card partial can affect every archive, search result and related-post module that uses it.
Understand WordPress image sizes and missing derivatives
WordPress creates several derivative files when an image is uploaded. The default output sizes documented by WordPress are:
| Size name | Default setting | What the dimension means |
|---|---|---|
| Thumbnail | 150 × 150 px maximum | Often cropped to fit the thumbnail box, depending on the site’s setting |
| Medium | 300 × 300 px maximum | Scaled to fit within the maximum dimensions |
| Medium-large | 768 px maximum width | Width limit; height follows the image ratio |
| Large | 1024 × 1024 px maximum | Scaled to fit within the maximum dimensions |
| Full Size | Original resolution | The uploaded file, subject to the original file and any upload processing limits |
These are default settings, not guarantees that every site has identical files. An administrator can change media settings, and a theme or plugin can register additional sizes with add_image_size(). A template can then request one of those names through the_post_thumbnail() or another image function.

Why a size change breaks older uploads
When a custom size is added or its dimensions change, WordPress does not automatically recreate that derivative for every image already in the Media Library. New uploads receive the new file, while older attachments may lack it. The template then emits a URL for a file that does not exist, producing a 404 or a broken image icon.
Check the rendered element’s src and srcset. Note the filename and dimensions, then look in the attachment’s generated files or request the URL directly. If the requested derivative is missing, regenerate thumbnails with a reputable regeneration tool or an equivalent administrative process, then test the post again. Regeneration changes derivative files; it does not change which image is assigned to a post.
Do not mistake cropping for a missing image
A thumbnail can exist and load while the subject is cut off. A square 150 × 150 thumbnail and a wide card image use different crops, and a theme may request a custom aspect ratio. Compare the source image with the selected size, then adjust the block’s focal point, aspect ratio or the theme’s crop setting. Regenerate only when the required derivative itself is absent or stale; regenerating will not override CSS that applies a different crop at display time.
Inspect the actual HTML and CSS
When the page looks empty, determine whether the browser received an image. Right-click the area, choose Inspect, and locate the rendered <img> element or the image block’s wrapper.
If no image element exists
No <img> means the active template, conditional logic or block configuration did not output an image. Return to the Site Editor or theme options rather than changing CSS. Also check that the URL is not using a template different from the one you edited—for example, a custom taxonomy template instead of the general archive template.
If the element exists but is invisible
In the developer tools’ computed styles, look for:
display: none, visibility: hiddenoropacity: 0;- zero or unexpectedly small
widthandheight; - a parent with
overflow: hiddenthat clips the image; - an absolutely positioned image behind another layer because of
z-index; - a responsive rule that hides the image at the viewport width you are testing;
- an aspect-ratio or fixed-height rule that collapses the box; and
object-fit: covercombined with a narrow box that crops away the subject.
Temporarily uncheck a suspect rule in developer tools. If the image appears, make the smallest theme or block-style change that fixes the rule, then retest desktop and mobile widths. Avoid adding a global display:block or height override without checking other components that share the selector.

Block-level presentation controls
The Post Featured Image block exposes width, height and aspect-ratio controls. A fixed height can create a severe crop; an aspect ratio can make a portrait image appear as a thin strip; and a constrained width can make a valid image look absent against a similarly colored background. Compare the block settings with the computed CSS rather than adjusting both at random. Remove one constraint at a time and save only after confirming the intended card or hero layout.

Lazy loading is normally a delay, not deletion
WordPress Core has lazy-loaded images by default since version 5.5 for post-content images and images rendered through functions such as wp_get_attachment_image(). Lazy loading can leave an image blank until it approaches the viewport, especially when JavaScript, an optimization layer or a custom script modifies the loading behavior. Scroll the image into view, watch the Network panel, and check whether a request is made.
If the request is never made, inspect optimization or lazy-load settings and any console errors. Do not disable lazy loading across the site as a first response: it can increase initial page weight. Test the affected template or image first, and change the smallest possible setting.
Read the network result
- 200 response: the file arrived; focus on CSS, dimensions, overlay and decoding issues.
- 404 response: the URL points to a missing derivative, moved file or incorrect rewrite; verify the filename and regenerate or restore the required file.
- 403 response: a permission, hotlink-protection or security rule is blocking delivery; review the server or CDN rule rather than replacing the image.
- 5xx response or timeout: the origin or an upstream cache is failing; test again after checking hosting logs and cache status.
Purge every relevant cache layer
A changed featured image can be stored in several places: the browser, a page-cache plugin, a hosting cache, a CDN and an optimization layer that rewrites image URLs. Purge the page or site cache according to the system you use, then open the URL in a private window. If the private test is current but a normal window is not, clear that browser’s cached data or use a hard refresh.
Compare the page source before and after purging. If the old image URL remains in the HTML, the stale response is being generated upstream of the browser. If the HTML is new but the image request still uses an old transformed URL, inspect the optimization or CDN rewrite. Restore normal caching after testing; permanently bypassing it can reduce performance and does not fix a template or derivative problem.
Isolate theme and plugin conflicts safely
When settings, templates, derivatives and CSS look correct, isolate conflicts in a controlled window. Record the URL, the active template, the assigned attachment, the image request status and each change you make.
- Confirm the behavior with the current theme and all plugins active.
- Temporarily switch to a current default WordPress theme. Recheck the same published post and, separately, an archive page.
- If the image appears, the original theme or its custom styles are responsible. Restore the original theme after recording the result.
- If the image is still missing, deactivate nonessential plugins temporarily, leaving only the components needed to access the site.
- Reactivate plugins one at a time, testing the same URL after each activation. Pay particular attention to layout builders, image optimization, lazy loading, security, redirection and cache components.
- When the failure returns, compare the plugin’s output and settings with the working state. Update or reconfigure that component, or report the reproducible conflict to its maintainer.
Use a staging site when available. Testing on production can briefly alter visitors’ layouts, cache headers or security behavior. Never leave a default theme or broad plugin deactivation in place as the “fix”; those steps identify the component that needs a targeted correction.

A complete diagnostic workflow
Use this sequence for a post, page, archive or homepage that should show a featured image. Stop when the observed result identifies the layer and apply only that layer’s remedy.
- Verify assignment: open the intended content, confirm the image in Post settings and save the post.
- Verify editor support: if the control is absent, enable it in Screen Options, confirm the active theme declares
post-thumbnails, and confirm the post type supportsthumbnail. - Identify the serving template: determine whether the URL is a single post, archive, home, search or custom template.
- Inspect the template: in a block theme, open Appearance > Editor and check for a Post Featured Image block; in a classic or hybrid theme, check Customizer/theme visibility settings and template code.
- Inspect source: view page source or developer tools and find the
<img>,src, srcsetand loading attributes. - Test the request: identify 200, 404, 403, timeout or 5xx responses and follow the corresponding branch above.
- Validate dimensions: confirm that the requested thumbnail or custom size exists. Regenerate derivatives if the size was added or changed after the image was uploaded.
- Validate presentation: check computed CSS, aspect ratio, fixed height, overflow, object-fit and responsive visibility.
- Clear caches: purge browser, page, hosting, CDN and optimization caches as applicable, then retest privately.
- Isolate conflicts: test a default theme and then plugins one at a time, recording which change alters the result.
Fixes matched to common symptoms
“The Featured Image box disappeared after a theme change.”
Check Screen Options, then verify that the new active theme declares post-thumbnails. If the content is a custom post type, verify its supports array includes thumbnail. Existing assignments are not necessarily lost when the interface disappears; the editor may simply no longer expose the control.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“It shows in the editor but not on the published post.”
Inspect the serving template. The editor stores the assignment, but the single-post, archive or home template may omit the Post Featured Image block or suppress it through a theme option or conditional. Confirm the published URL is using the template you edited, then save and purge caches.
“The thumbnail area is blank, but the image URL is present.”
Check the network response and computed styles. A 404 points to a missing derivative; a 200 response with zero dimensions, hidden display, clipping or an aggressive object-fit rule points to CSS or block settings. Correct the specific rule and test all responsive breakpoints.
“The image is badly cropped or the subject is missing.”
Determine whether the crop comes from a generated thumbnail or display CSS. Compare the requested size with the default and custom dimensions, adjust the Post Featured Image block’s aspect ratio or focal point, and regenerate only when the required derivative is unavailable.
“The replacement appears for me but visitors see the old image.”
Save the post, purge page and image caches, and test in a private window. If the old URL remains in page source, purge the cache that generated the HTML. If only the image request is old, inspect CDN or optimization URL rewriting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrevention and maintenance checklist
- Keep a documented list of post types that support thumbnails and review it after theme or plugin changes.
- When adding or changing a custom image size, plan a controlled regeneration of existing derivatives and verify disk space before starting.
- After editing a Site Editor template, test a single post, an archive and the homepage at desktop and mobile widths.
- Use browser developer tools to confirm image requests and dimensions before changing theme code.
- Keep cache purges targeted when possible, and record which cache layer was cleared.
- Test optimization and lazy-loading changes on representative pages; performance settings can alter loading without removing the underlying image.
- Maintain a staging copy for theme and plugin conflict tests so visitors are not exposed to temporary layouts.
When a code-level change is justified
Use code only after the editor, template and generated-file checks establish that code is the failing layer. Adding post-thumbnails support is appropriate when the active theme genuinely lacks it. Adding thumbnail to a custom post type is appropriate when that type should expose featured images. Registering a custom size is appropriate when a design needs a repeatable crop or maximum dimension.
Template and CSS edits have a wider blast radius than a per-post setting. Before deploying one, identify every template or component that uses the function or selector, make the change on staging, and test existing posts with landscape, portrait and very small source images. Keep a rollback copy of the previous template or stylesheet so a layout regression can be reversed quickly.
