A WordPress launch is an operational change, not just a final visual review. Before you point DNS at the production server, verify the production URLs, HTTPS, content, forms, email, backups, permissions, redirects, indexing, analytics, performance and integrations. Use the checklist below to decide whether a site is genuinely ready and to make rollback possible if the release fails.

What “ready to go live” actually means
A site is ready when its critical user journeys work on the live infrastructure and the team can detect, diagnose and reverse a failure. That includes the homepage and key landing pages, navigation, search, login, contact and newsletter forms, checkout or booking flows, notification email, analytics events, robots.txt, the XML sitemap and any scheduled jobs.

WordPress Site Health is a useful configuration check, but it is not a substitute for exercising the site. It reports critical configuration, security, update and performance concerns and specifically tells you whether HTTPS is in use. In Tools > Site Health > Status, resolve critical issues before launch; WordPress describes these as potential security vulnerabilities or serious performance problems.
1. Assign ownership and the launch decision
Write down who controls every system that can block or reverse the release. Do this before the final content freeze, not during an outage.

- Registrar and DNS account
- Hosting control panel and server access
- WordPress administrator accounts
- Analytics and Google Search Console properties
- Email or transactional-mail provider
- CDN or reverse-proxy configuration
- Backup storage and restoration environment
- Billing ownership and an escalation contact
Name one person who can approve the release and one person who can authorize rollback. Record the planned cutover time, the freeze window and the communication channel. If a contractor, agency or developer is the only person with access, transfer or document that access before launch.
2. Confirm production URLs, DNS and HTTPS
Lock the canonical address
Confirm the final hostname and whether the site will use the www or non-www form. In WordPress, verify both the Home URL and Site URL match the intended production address. Search the database and exported content for staging hostnames before the switch.

Test the certificate and redirects
Open the site over HTTPS and test HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior, the preferred hostname, alternate-hostname redirects, mixed-content warnings and the CDN or proxy mode. WordPress.org documentation states that “HTTPS improves the security of your website.” Check certificate coverage for every hostname visitors can use and confirm that renewal monitoring is enabled.
Remove staging controls
At the planned cutover, remove password gates, maintenance mode, staging banners, test users and staging-only integrations. Inspect page content, media URLs, canonical tags, structured data, feeds and email templates for any remaining staging hostname. A page that looks correct can still expose staging URLs in its source or outgoing messages.
3. Complete content and editorial QA
Proofread the pages visitors will use
Search the database and rendered pages for unfinished placeholder copy. Proofread the homepage, service or product pages, pricing, contact and about pages, posts, author information, navigation, footer and legal pages. For a video-game site, also check game titles, platform names, release dates, ratings labels and download or media descriptions for consistency.
Check media, headings and calls to action
- Use a logical heading order and make each page’s primary purpose obvious.
- Add meaningful alt text to informative images; mark decorative images appropriately.
- Verify captions, thumbnails, video embeds, downloads and image dimensions.
- Check dates, author bylines, category pages and calls to action.
- Open important internal and external links, including footer and legal links, and correct broken destinations.
The WordPress.com launch checklist also emphasizes proofreading, navigation, forms, responsiveness, broken links and broken images. Test those items on the actual production build rather than relying on a staging preview alone.

Submit every form in the final environment while logged out and, where relevant, while logged in. Include contact, newsletter, login, registration, search, booking, payment and checkout forms.

Verify the complete submission path
- Required-field validation, format checks and useful error messages
- Success pages or inline confirmation states
- Spam controls and rate limits
- Autoresponders and notification recipients
- Delivery to the CRM, help desk or other connected system
- Confirmation emails, reply addresses and branding
Check SPF, DKIM and DMARC, or the equivalent settings required by the configured mail provider. Send messages to more than one mailbox where possible and inspect spam folders. Confirm that a test submission reaches the intended operational inbox and does not silently fail. Remove test records from production reports when the connected service allows it, or label them so they cannot be mistaken for genuine leads or orders.
5. Make backup and rollback real
Create the pre-cutover backup
Immediately before the DNS or launch-control change, take a full database and file backup. WordPress update documentation says, “Before you get started, it’s a good idea to back up your website.” Keep a copy outside the production host when the service supports it.
Document restoration
Record the backup timestamp, storage location, retention period, owner and exact restoration steps. A backup is not a rollback plan until someone can recover it. Perform a restore drill in a separate environment, or otherwise verify that the archive can be unpacked and the database can be imported. Note how DNS, environment variables, uploads, secrets and scheduled tasks would be restored as well.

Define the rollback trigger
Agree in advance which failures justify reversal: for example, unavailable key pages, broken checkout, missing form notifications, widespread redirect errors, corrupted content or a security incident. Record who makes that call and how the previous DNS or release configuration will be reinstated.
6. Review WordPress core, themes, plugins and security
Release known-compatible versions
Update WordPress core, themes and plugins in staging first. Test the updated combination, then confirm that the same versions and configuration are present in production. Do not introduce an untested update during the DNS cutover.
Reduce the attack surface
- Remove unused themes, plugins, sample content and dormant administrator accounts.
- Review roles and least-privilege access; use strong, unique passwords and multi-factor authentication where available.
- Check file permissions, firewall and CDN rules, security headers and malware monitoring.
- Remove debug output and test credentials from the production environment.
Open Tools > Site Health > Status and clear critical findings. Recheck after enabling the final cache, proxy and security settings because those layers can change what WordPress reports.

7. Test performance on real browsers and devices
Test representative pages while logged out, using the final hosting, CDN and caching configuration. Include the homepage, a long article, an image-heavy page, search results and the most important conversion page.
- Check server response time, page rendering and cache headers.
- Resize and compress images appropriately and confirm that fonts load without blocking the page.
- Watch the browser console for JavaScript errors and failed network requests.
- Inspect redirect chains and verify that cached pages do not show stale or private content.
- Review Core Web Vitals or equivalent performance metrics without claiming a score you did not measure.
Use current desktop and mobile browsers. Test touch targets, menus, search, media playback, orientation changes and checkout interactions on physical or representative devices. A page that works for an administrator may fail for logged-out visitors because of cache, cookie or permission differences.
8. Perform an accessibility pass
Automated scans can identify patterns, but they cannot replace manual checks of the journeys that matter. Navigate with a keyboard from the address bar through menus, forms, dialogs and checkout. Confirm visible focus and a logical tab order.
- Use a meaningful heading hierarchy and descriptive link text.
- Provide usable labels and instructions for every form control.
- Check color contrast and do not convey state by color alone.
- Supply alt text for informative images and captions or transcripts where needed.
- Test zoom and narrow viewports without clipped content or horizontal traps.
- Check representative pages with a screen reader for sensible names, roles and states.
9. Protect SEO, indexing and analytics
Make production crawlable
Give important pages unique titles and meta descriptions. Confirm the URL structure, canonical URLs, open-graph or share metadata, structured data, robots.txt and the XML sitemap. Remove staging noindex directives and password restrictions from production pages that should be discovered.
Validate analytics on the production property
Configure analytics and Google Search Console for the live hostname, not the staging property. Test page views, key events, consent behavior and conversions from a clean browser session. Confirm that internal testing is excluded or clearly identified so launch activity does not distort reports.

10. Map migrations and redirects
Classify the release
A new site mainly requires correct production configuration and discovery. A same-domain redesign must prove content, metadata, links, tracking and indexation parity. A domain or path migration adds URL mapping, redirect and search-monitoring risk.
Build the old-to-new URL map
Export the old URL inventory, including high-traffic pages, pages with external links, feeds and downloadable files. Map each old address to the closest live destination. Implement one-hop 301 redirects rather than chains or sending visitors to an unrelated homepage.
Test every variant
Test old-domain and HTTP variants, query strings where relevant, trailing-slash behavior, canonical tags, internal links, feeds and files. For an unchanged-domain redesign, compare the old and new versions for content parity, metadata, canonicals, forms, tracking and indexation even when no redirect is required.

11. Follow a controlled launch sequence
- Freeze content and code at the agreed time.
- Capture the final full backup and record the current DNS and redirect configuration.
- Switch DNS or the selected launch control only after the production server is ready.
- Purge caches at the appropriate layers.
- Run a smoke test from an external network, not only from an office or VPN.
- Check the homepage, highest-value landing pages, login, forms, checkout, notification email, HTTPS, redirects, robots.txt, sitemap, analytics and error logs.
- Keep the rollback owner and decision visible to everyone involved.
Use a clean browser session and at least one mobile device for the smoke test. Confirm that DNS has reached the intended server before treating a successful test as representative.

Launch is the beginning of observation, not the end of testing. Monitor:
- Uptime, TLS certificate expiry and server or PHP errors
- Broken links, redirect failures and unexpected 404 or 5xx responses
- Forms, email delivery, checkout and other conversion events
- Analytics events, consent behavior and Search Console coverage
- Scheduled tasks, cache behavior and queue backlogs
- Security alerts, malware checks and administrator activity
- Backup completion and the availability of the stored archives
Revisit the highest-value pages from real devices and networks. Keep the staging copy private, and update the launch record with each observed issue, owner, fix and verification result.

Common launch failures and the first response
The site still shows staging content
Check DNS resolution, cache layers, maintenance or password controls and hard-coded staging URLs in content, media, canonicals, structured data and email templates. Purge caches only after confirming the production origin is correct.
Forms appear successful but no message arrives
Inspect the mail provider logs, recipient address, sender authentication and spam folder. Submit again from a clean session and verify delivery to the connected CRM or help desk. Do not assume a browser success message proves backend delivery.
Pages disappeared from search
Check robots.txt, page-level noindex directives, canonical targets, sitemap contents, authentication gates and redirect destinations. Confirm that Search Console and analytics are installed on the production hostname and continue monitoring coverage rather than making a conclusion from a single crawl.
Visitors report loops or certificate warnings
Compare the HTTP-to-HTTPS rule, www/non-www preference, proxy mode and origin certificate. Remove conflicting redirect rules and test each hostname from an external network before restoring normal traffic.
Go/no-go decision
Proceed only when the owner can point to a working production smoke test, a timestamped backup with a verified restoration route, tested forms and email, confirmed HTTPS and URL behavior, crawlable production pages, functioning analytics and an assigned rollback decision-maker. If any of those proofs is missing, the site is not ready for an irreversible DNS change.
