WordPress Hosting for Beginners: How to Choose Your First Host

Shared hosting is usually the right low-cost start for a beginner WordPress site. This guide explains when managed hosting is worth paying for, which PHP and database versions to require, and how to compare renewals, backups, support and migration terms.

For most first WordPress sites, start with shared hosting. It is normally the least expensive sensible option for a personal blog, learning project, or low-traffic side project. Move to managed WordPress hosting when performance, security, support, or downtime has a direct effect on revenue or conversions. Before paying for either type, verify that the server offers PHP 8.3 or newer, MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.11 or newer, and HTTPS.

What your first WordPress host actually provides

A host rents the server environment on which WordPress runs. That environment supplies the PHP interpreter, database server, web server, storage, network connection, security controls, backups and a control panel. WordPress itself is free software, but a site still needs this infrastructure and a domain name.

Hosting choice affects more than loading speed. It determines who applies software updates, how quickly a failed site can be restored, whether you can change PHP versions, and how much help you receive when a plugin or theme causes an error. Those responsibilities are split differently between shared and managed plans.

Shared hosting in plain language

Shared hosting places many unrelated websites on the same server. You receive a portion of the machine’s storage, memory and processing capacity. That arrangement keeps the entry price low, but a traffic surge on another account can reduce the resources available to your site. You generally install WordPress and handle updates, backups and security yourself.

Managed WordPress hosting in plain language

Managed WordPress hosting costs more and concentrates on WordPress-specific operations. Typical managed packages add automatic updates, built-in caching, a content-delivery network, staging environments, daily backups and support from staff familiar with WordPress. The exact bundle varies by provider, so treat those items as features to verify rather than guarantees.

Comparisons published by hosting companies and hosting tools have commercial interests. They are useful for understanding the usual division of responsibilities, but check the actual plan terms and backup policy before treating a feature as included.

Shared or managed: the decision that matters first

Decision factor Shared hosting Managed WordPress hosting
Typical role Low-cost starting point for learning, personal sites and low-stakes projects WordPress-focused service for sites where reliability, security or performance has business consequences
Server resources Resources are shared with other customers; a neighbour’s traffic spike can slow your site Usually provides more WordPress-specific performance controls and support; isolation depends on the plan
Updates and backups You handle updates, backups and security Typically adds automatic updates and daily backups, subject to the provider’s stated scope and retention
Performance tools May require you to configure caching and other optimisations Typically bundles caching, a CDN and sometimes staging
Support General hosting support; WordPress troubleshooting may be limited WordPress-specific expert support is commonly included
Cost trade-off Lowest-cost entry, with more administration left to you Higher price in exchange for automation and specialist assistance

Choose shared hosting when you are learning, publishing a personal site, or testing an idea whose occasional slowdown would not cost money. Choose managed hosting when an outage can lose sales, bookings, memberships, advertising income or a launch deadline, or when you do not want to maintain updates and recovery procedures yourself.

Do not use a monthly-visitor number as an automatic upgrade rule. No official organisation publishes a universal shared-to-managed threshold, and secondary guides give widely different figures. Watch your host’s resource graphs, response times and error logs, then upgrade when the consequences of contention or maintenance exceed the managed plan’s premium.

Check the technical baseline before you buy

The WordPress.org requirements page currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS for every installation. Ask the host for the actual versions available on the plan, not merely the oldest version it can run.

PHP: target 8.3 or newer

PHP executes WordPress code and the code in your plugins and theme. A host should let you select or change the PHP version in its control panel, or make the change for you on request. PHP 7.4 and later can still run WordPress, but PHP 7.4 is end-of-life; relying on it leaves an avoidable security risk and may prevent newer plugins from working correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before signing up, ask two precise questions: “Which PHP versions are available today?” and “Can I switch versions without moving accounts?” A vague answer such as “PHP supported” does not tell you whether the recommended baseline is available.

Database: MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.11+

WordPress stores posts, settings, users and plugin data in a MySQL-compatible database. The current recommendation is MySQL 8.0 or newer, or MariaDB 10.11 or newer. MySQL 5.5.5 and later remain a legacy compatibility floor, but those older releases are out of date and carry security risk. Confirm both the database type and version; “MySQL-compatible” alone is not enough to evaluate the requirement.

HTTPS is required

Every WordPress installation should use HTTPS. Confirm that the plan can issue and renew a TLS certificate, that the certificate covers the domain you will use, and that the control panel can redirect visitors from HTTP to HTTPS. After installation, test the public URL and the WordPress address so that images, scripts and login pages do not load insecurely.

WordPress version changes make verification essential

Server requirements change as WordPress evolves. The WordPress hosting team published a post titled “WordPress 6.8 Server Compatibility” on April 16, 2025. Its existence and date show why a host’s compatibility statement should be checked against the WordPress release you intend to run.

Third-party guides discussing WordPress 7.0 conflict: one reports a PHP 7.4 floor, with PHP 8.4 or 8.5 and MySQL 8.4 LTS recommended; another says PHP 8.3 or newer is recommended, WordPress still runs on PHP 7.2.24 or newer, and suggests MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.6. Because these claims disagree, do not choose a host from a guide’s floor number alone.

The practical choice that remains consistent is to target PHP 8.3 or newer and MySQL 8.0 or newer or MariaDB 10.11 or newer, then verify the exact floor in the current WordPress.org requirements and release notes. A host that has not upgraded its supported stack can leave the WordPress dashboard broken after an update.

A buyer’s checklist for comparing plans

Use this checklist while reading a plan page or asking pre-sales support. These are practical buying checks, not promises that every host includes each item.

  • Renewal price: record the recurring price and billing term, not just the introductory promotion. Put the renewal date on your calendar.
  • Backup policy: determine whether backups are included, how often they run, how long they are retained, where they are stored, and whether restoring one costs extra. A backup you cannot restore is not a recovery plan.
  • WordPress installation: look for a one-click installer or a documented manual installation path. Confirm that you can create a staging copy if you need to test updates.
  • SSL certificate: check that HTTPS certificates are included and renew automatically, rather than being a paid add-on.
  • PHP controls: verify that you can select PHP 8.3 or newer and change versions when a plugin requires it.
  • Database details: ask whether the account uses MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.11+ and whether database creation is limited by the plan.
  • Support hours and channels: find out whether support is available when you publish, and whether staff will help with WordPress-specific errors or only server availability.
  • Migration help: ask whether the provider will move an existing site, what is included, and what happens if the migration fails.
  • Resource limits: read the limits for storage, memory, CPU, concurrent processes and database size. “Unlimited” marketing language does not remove fair-use or process limits.
  • Exit options: confirm that you can download files and a database and change DNS if you later move to another host.

How to choose step by step

  1. Describe the site’s consequence of failure. A personal gaming journal and a store selling game-related products do not have the same tolerance for downtime. Write down what an hour of unavailability would cost in lost work, sales, sign-ups or reputation.
  2. Set a management preference. If you are comfortable updating WordPress, plugins and themes, creating backups and checking security alerts, shared hosting can be a sensible first step. If you would rather pay for automation and specialist help, shortlist managed plans.
  3. Verify the server baseline. Obtain written confirmation of PHP 8.3+, MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.11+, HTTPS, and the ability to change PHP versions.
  4. Read renewal and backup terms. Record the recurring charge, backup frequency, retention, restore process and any fees. Do not compare plans using the first-term price alone.
  5. Test support before purchase. Send a question containing your WordPress version, desired PHP version and migration needs. The accuracy and clarity of the reply are evidence about the help you may receive later.
  6. Choose the smallest plan that meets the requirements. Start with enough storage, database capacity and process headroom for your content and expected workload. Avoid paying for resources you cannot yet use, but leave a straightforward upgrade path.
  7. Document the account. Save the plan terms, renewal date, server versions, DNS records, administrator email and backup instructions in a secure password manager or recovery document.

Setting up WordPress safely on a new account

Before installation

  • Point your domain’s DNS only after you know the host’s nameservers or server address and have recorded the previous records.
  • Enable HTTPS and wait for the certificate to issue before sharing the site publicly.
  • Choose a strong, unique administrator password and enable multi-factor authentication if the host or WordPress setup supports it.
  • Use a separate administrator account for maintenance and a lower-privilege account for routine writing.

Immediately after installation

  1. Open the WordPress dashboard and check the Site Health screen for PHP, HTTPS and database warnings.
  2. Update WordPress, the active theme and plugins from trusted sources, taking a backup first if your plan supplies one.
  3. Set the site address and WordPress address to the HTTPS version, then inspect several pages for mixed-content warnings.
  4. Configure a backup schedule and perform a test restore or download. Record where the backup is stored and how to request restoration.
  5. Remove unused themes, plugins and default content. Inactive code still increases maintenance and attack surface.
  6. Set the correct timezone, permalink structure and administrator contact email before publishing.

When shared hosting is good enough—and when it is not

Signs shared hosting fits

  • The site is personal, experimental or a low-stakes side project.
  • You can perform updates and maintain an independent backup routine.
  • Short slowdowns would not cause a material financial loss.
  • The plan meets the current PHP, database and HTTPS requirements and offers a clear upgrade path.

Signs to consider managed hosting

  • Downtime affects revenue, registrations, advertising delivery or a time-sensitive launch.
  • You need routine staging, caching, CDN configuration or automated daily backups.
  • You do not have time or confidence to troubleshoot plugin conflicts, updates and restores.
  • Resource contention, slow responses or repeated service errors continue after you have reduced unnecessary plugins and optimised the site.

Traffic alone is not the decision. A small site handling paid memberships may justify managed service sooner than a larger hobby site. Conversely, a high-traffic but non-commercial project might remain on shared hosting if its owner accepts occasional contention and can recover quickly.

Troubleshooting common first-host problems

The dashboard breaks after an update

First determine whether the server’s PHP version changed or is below the version required by the new WordPress release, theme or plugin. Use the host’s control panel to select a supported PHP version, or ask support to do it. If the dashboard remains inaccessible, disable the newest plugin through the file manager or database only if you understand the recovery procedure, then restore a known-good backup.

The site is slow at unpredictable times

Check the host’s CPU, memory and process graphs and compare the timestamps with your access logs. On shared hosting, a neighbour’s traffic spike can affect your account. Also check whether a backup, crawler or unoptimised plugin is consuming resources. If the pattern persists and the site matters commercially, request a managed upgrade or a plan with stronger isolation rather than assuming a new theme will solve server contention.

A restore fails or no backup exists

Ask support where backups are stored, what retention applies and whether restoration includes both files and the database. If the plan offers no usable copy, create an independent export immediately and change providers or plans before making major updates. Schedule recurring off-site copies so a host-level failure cannot remove the only backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HTTPS warnings remain

Confirm the certificate covers the exact domain and that HTTP redirects to HTTPS. Inspect page source and browser developer tools for images, scripts or fonts still requested over HTTP. Update those URLs in WordPress settings, the theme or the affected plugin, then clear caches and retest an incognito window.

Costs: compare the bill you will actually pay

Current plan prices and limits change frequently, and the available evidence does not establish a reliable market-wide range. Instead of treating an introductory figure as the cost of ownership, calculate the first renewal and each recurring billing period. Add paid backups, premium migration assistance, extra storage, staging, email or SSL charges when those are not included.

Write the result in a simple worksheet with four lines: promotional price, renewal price, required add-ons and the cost of moving away. This exposes a low first-term price that becomes expensive once the discount ends. It also lets you compare a cheaper shared plan with a managed plan whose automation could replace your own maintenance time.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Migration and changing hosts later

Your first choice is not permanent. Before moving, lower the domain’s DNS time-to-live if appropriate, export the WordPress files and database, and record the current PHP version and plugin list. Build the copy on the new host, test it with a temporary URL or hosts-file override, and verify logins, media, forms, redirects and HTTPS before changing DNS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the old account active until DNS has propagated and the new site has handled normal visits. Ask the new provider what migration help includes; “free migration” can mean a limited one-time transfer rather than troubleshooting custom DNS, email or broken plugins. Once the new site is stable, take a final backup and cancel the old service only after confirming that email and domain records do not depend on it.

A practical first-host recommendation

For a beginner’s personal blog, gaming diary or learning project, select a reputable shared plan that meets the PHP 8.3+, MySQL 8.0+/MariaDB 10.11+ and HTTPS baseline, includes a workable backup method, and lets you upgrade. Spend your attention on renewal terms and recovery rather than decorative extras.

For a site already tied to sales, paid memberships, lead generation or a launch date, choose managed WordPress hosting if its automatic updates, backups, caching, staging and expert support are genuinely included in writing. The higher bill buys reduced operational work and a clearer response when something fails; it does not remove the need to review backups and updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start on shared hosting and move to managed WordPress hosting later?

Yes. Choose a plan that lets you export the WordPress files and database and provides a clear upgrade or migration path. Test the copied site before changing DNS, and keep the old account until the new site and email records work normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose a host that still offers PHP 7.4?

Treat PHP 7.4 as a legacy compatibility option, not a target. It is end-of-life and carries security risk. Prefer PHP 8.3 or newer and confirm the host can change versions as WordPress and your plugins evolve.

Is there an official monthly-visitor limit for shared hosting?

No universal official cutoff is established. Secondary guides cite different ranges, so use resource graphs, response times, error logs and the financial impact of downtime to decide when managed hosting is justified.
