A 99.9% SLA allows about 43.2 minutes of unavailability in a 30-day month, while 99.99% allows about 4.32 minutes. Those figures may exclude maintenance, customer-caused errors, third-party failures and other events, and the remedy is usually a future invoice credit rather than cash.

For a gaming site, the right SLA is the one that covers the components your readers depend on, measures outages in a way you can verify, and offers a realistic claim process. Compare scope, measurement, exclusions, architecture, evidence requirements and credits before comparing headline percentages.

A service-level agreement (SLA) is a contract, not a guarantee that every page element is reachable every second. It defines a provider’s promised availability for a named service during a stated measurement period, then specifies what happens if the promise is missed.
“Availability” may refer only to the hosting platform or web server. It may not include your domain registrar, DNS provider, content-delivery network, payment processor, advertising scripts, game APIs, email service, plugins or an external image host. A WordPress page can therefore be unavailable to visitors even when the host’s measured service remains available.

Before treating two percentages as comparable, identify six terms:
- Covered service: the exact server, database, network, CDN, control panel, backup system or application named in the agreement.
- Measurement period: a calendar month, billing month or another interval.
- Availability definition: how an outage starts, ends and is counted.
- Exclusions: events removed from the calculation.
- Evidence and authority: whose monitoring record controls a dispute.
- Remedy: the credit, cap and claim deadline if availability falls below target.
If any of these terms is missing or unclear, the percentage alone is not a meaningful buying signal.

The basic calculation is unavailable time = measurement period × (1 − availability target). The following figures use a 30-day month (43,200 minutes). They are mathematical allowances, not predictions of how often a provider will fail.

A published explainer notes that 99.9% averaged over a month can be about 44 minutes, while 99.99% measured over a full year can still allow more than 52 minutes. The period matters: a short monthly window and a long annual window produce different practical outcomes even when the percentage is identical. Exclusions can reduce the time that is actually covered further.
Do not assume that a 99.99% label means four minutes for every service or every year. Ask whether the provider resets the calculation each billing month, uses a rolling period, aggregates all accounts or measures each site separately.

Contract terms to inspect before you buy
1. Define the service boundary
Look for a list of included components rather than a marketing phrase such as “the platform.” For WordPress, ask whether the SLA covers the HTTP service, database, storage, network path and provider-managed CDN together. Determine whether backups, staging, the control panel and support response times have separate commitments.
If your gaming site depends on an image CDN or a real-time statistics API, those dependencies are outside a hosting SLA unless the contract expressly includes them. Record which failures would still leave you without a working page even though the host can deny an SLA claim.
2. Understand how uptime is measured
Measurement may be per site, per application, per account or across an entire hosting platform. A platform-wide calculation can hide a single-site outage if the provider aggregates results. Conversely, a site-specific test may count an error that affects only your configuration.
Ask what probe is used, how often it checks, which regions are tested and how transient errors are handled. Many agreements make the provider’s monitoring system authoritative. Run your own independent monitor so you have a timestamped record to compare with the provider’s report.
3. Identify the measurement window
“Monthly” can mean a calendar month or your billing period. Kinsta defines a monthly billing period around the customer’s billing dates. A billing-period definition can move the start and end dates when you change plans or billing cycles, so save the exact wording that applied during an incident.

Check whether downtime is rounded, whether partial minutes count and whether incidents are combined. A target that looks generous on a calendar-month basis may be harder to satisfy if your contract uses a shorter custom interval.
4. Read every exclusion
Typical exclusions include scheduled maintenance, emergency maintenance, customer configuration, traffic abuse, third-party services, force majeure and suspension for policy violations. Some agreements also exclude attacks, incorrect DNS records, expired domains, exceeded resource limits or actions taken after a security warning.
Maintenance language deserves special attention. “Scheduled” may be excluded only when the provider gives advance notice, while emergency work may be excluded without notice. Ask whether a maintenance window has a maximum length and whether repeated windows are capped. If the contract does not state those limits, assume the headline percentage covers less time than the arithmetic suggests.
5. Calculate the actual remedy
Most hosting SLAs provide service credits applied to future invoices. They generally do not reimburse lost advertising revenue, tournament registrations, memberships or sponsorships. Read the credit table, the maximum credit in one period, expiration rules and whether credits can be transferred when you change plans.

Check whether the remedy is triggered by any missed target or only by full hours or half-hours beyond a threshold. A contract can promise 99.95% availability yet pay nothing for a 20-minute outage if its credit table starts at a longer interval.

6. Confirm the claim deadline and procedure
Credits are commonly forfeited unless you submit a written request through a specified support channel. WP Engine and Kinsta require requests within 30 days of the end of the relevant period. The request may need your account ID, incident times, monitoring evidence and an explanation of why the event was not excluded.
Save outage alerts, status-page entries, HTTP logs and screenshots as the incident occurs. Do not wait for the provider to contact you; an SLA normally creates a right to request a credit, not an automatic payment.
Provider examples and how to read them
These examples illustrate why the surrounding terms matter. Availability targets, eligibility and remedies can change, so verify the live agreement for your plan and region before relying on any figure.

WP Engine’s wording is explicit: “WP Engine will make the Services available 99.95% of the time, excluding any Excused Downtime.” Kinsta likewise states: “At Kinsta, whilst we do not offer high availability (HA) hosting, we do offer a Service Level Agreement (SLA) backed uptime guarantee.” These statements distinguish a contractual uptime commitment from a redundant system design.

A provider can meet an SLA with a single instance that is restored quickly after failure. High availability normally uses redundancy, failover and removal of single points of failure so service continues during maintenance or hardware problems. The SLA percentage does not reveal which model you are buying.

Kinsta says standard hosting uses a single Linux container per site rather than multiple load-balanced instances and does not offer HA hosting, although custom plans may offer up to 99.99%. If continuous service during a node failure is essential, ask about replicated application instances, database failover, storage redundancy, health checks, geographic separation and the time required to promote a replacement. A higher percentage without those details may improve the credit promise but not materially change your outage risk.

- Set up independent checks before launch. Monitor the public homepage and a representative WordPress URL from more than one location. Record status code, response time and the first and last failed check.
- Separate host failure from dependency failure. Check DNS resolution, TLS certificate validity, the origin response, CDN status and critical third-party scripts. An external script can make a page appear broken while the origin remains available.
- Capture evidence. Keep monitor exports, server logs, screenshots, provider status messages and support-ticket numbers. Note your timezone and convert timestamps consistently.
- Read the exclusion list for the incident. Determine whether maintenance, a traffic spike, a plugin change, policy suspension or a third-party outage removes the event from the SLA calculation.
- Reconcile your timeline with the provider’s measurement. Ask support for the official incident interval and the calculation for the billing period. Identify any difference in probe location or rounding.
- Submit the request before the deadline. Follow the contract’s written process, include the account and billing period, cite the measured downtime and request the credit specified by the table.
- Record the decision. Save the approval or denial, the credited invoice and the stated reason. Repeated exclusions or disputed measurements may justify changing plans or providers.
When paying for 99.99% is justified
Start with the business impact of an outage, not the extra decimal place. A small community site that can tolerate an occasional maintenance window may gain little from a premium target if its plugins, DNS and external APIs remain single points of failure. A site taking payments, running time-sensitive event registration or serving a large live audience may value shorter covered outages and faster escalation.
- Choose a standard target when: a few dozen minutes of covered downtime per month is acceptable, the site has a rollback plan and the price of a premium tier exceeds the likely loss.
- Consider 99.95% when: a 20-minute monthly allowance better matches your launch, sponsorship or membership commitments and the credit terms are meaningful.
- Consider 99.99% when: several minutes can disrupt a live event, paid transaction flow or time-critical audience, and the plan also supplies redundancy, rapid support and a remedy you can actually claim.
Do not buy 99.99% solely for search visibility or because the number looks stronger. Search engines and visitors experience the complete request path, while the SLA may cover only one provider component.
Questions to put in writing
- What exact services and regions are included in the availability calculation?
- Is the period a calendar month, billing month or rolling interval?
- Which monitoring system is authoritative, and can customers obtain incident timestamps?
- How are partial minutes, failed checks and simultaneous component failures counted?
- What maintenance notice and maximum duration apply?
- Are DNS, CDN, backups, database service and control-panel access covered separately?
- What redundancy and failover exist at the web, database and storage layers?
- What credit applies at each downtime band, what is the cap and when does it expire?
- What evidence and support channel are required, and is the deadline 30 days or another period?
- Does the SLA apply to the exact plan, custom configuration and geography you intend to use?
A practical comparison worksheet
For each candidate host, create one row with the following fields: target percentage; covered components; measurement period; provider monitoring authority; maintenance exclusions; emergency-work exclusions; customer and third-party exclusions; architecture and failover; credit bands and cap; claim deadline; support escalation; and recurring price. Add a second row for your own monitoring results after launch.
Then translate the target into minutes for the contract’s actual period. Compare that covered time with your maximum tolerable outage, and compare the credit with the financial impact of downtime. If the host cannot answer a scope, measurement or remedy question in writing, treat the SLA as uncertain rather than assuming the most favorable interpretation.

Bottom line
Choose the SLA whose definition matches the failures your WordPress site can suffer. A 99.9% promise can allow roughly 43 minutes in a 30-day month; 99.95% allows about 22 minutes; and 99.99% allows about 4.3 minutes. Those numbers matter only after you account for exclusions, monitoring authority, architecture, claim deadlines and the size of the credit. Independent monitoring and a written, plan-specific contract are more valuable than an isolated uptime badge.
