If WordPress says a password-reset message was sent but nothing appears, first verify that you entered the username or email belonging to that site, then search spam, quarantine, filters and forwarding rules. If the account is correct, the fault is usually in the site’s outgoing mail path or the receiving domain’s filtering—not in the password itself.

WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress use different mail paths. WordPress.com recovery depends on the account email and its sender allow-list. A self-hosted site depends on its host, PHP mail or sendmail, SMTP/API credentials, DNS authentication and recipient filtering. The steps below separate those cases and provide administrative ways to regain access when email cannot be repaired immediately.

Start with the account and mailbox, not the site settings
The Lost your password? form sends a reset link to the email address stored for that WordPress user. If that address is misspelled, belongs to a different site, or cannot be opened, no mail configuration change can deliver the message to you.
- Open the login page for the exact site. Do not use a staging, development or similarly named site by mistake.
- Select Lost your password? Enter the username or email actually associated with the user account. If you are unsure, ask a site administrator to confirm the account details.
- Search every mailbox location. Search for the site name, “password reset” and the expected sender address. Check Inbox, Spam or Junk, quarantine, archived mail and any “Other” or focused tabs.
- Inspect mailbox rules. Review filters, forwarding rules, blocked-sender lists and organization-wide quarantine. A rule may move or delete the message before it reaches the Inbox.
- Check capacity and access. A full mailbox, disabled account or inaccessible company mailbox prevents recovery even when WordPress generated the message.
For WordPress.com accounts, allow-list [email protected] and confirm the account email shown in the WordPress.com account settings. If you can no longer access that address, use WordPress.com’s account-recovery support path rather than repeatedly submitting the form.

Read the message WordPress displays
“No user was found”
This indicates that the username or email supplied is not associated with a user on that site. Verify the site URL, spelling and account identity with an administrator. It is an account-identification problem, not evidence that a message was lost in transit.
“The email was sent” but nothing arrives
Continue with delivery checks. WordPress has accepted the request for sending, but that does not establish delivery. The WordPress developer reference for wp_mail() states: A true return value does not automatically mean that the user received the email successfully.
The return value generally means that WordPress processed the send request through the configured mail transport; the receiving server can still reject, quarantine or discard the message.

Record the exact wording and timing. An error may point to a failed local mail transport, invalid SMTP credentials or a blocked connection. If the form appears to succeed but ordinary site messages also fail, investigate the outgoing mail path before trying another password.
Identify which WordPress service you are using
WordPress.com
WordPress.com controls the account-recovery service and sender infrastructure. Your first-line checks are the account email, mailbox folders, filters and the allow-list entry for [email protected]. If the address on the account is inaccessible, follow WordPress.com’s recovery support process; a site-level SMTP change cannot repair a WordPress.com account mailbox problem.
Self-hosted WordPress
On a self-hosted installation, the website sends through the hosting server’s PHP mail()/sendmail path or through an SMTP or API relay configured by the site administrator. The host may not provide a working SMTP server, may restrict outbound mail, or may require authenticated credentials. DNS authentication and recipient policies can also reject messages after WordPress has handed them off.

Ask who controls each layer before making changes:
- WordPress administrator: site settings, users and mail plugin configuration.
- Hosting administrator: server mail transport, firewall and outbound-port policy.
- Mail provider: SMTP/API credentials, sending limits, rejection and bounce records.
- DNS administrator: SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for the sending domain.
- Mailbox administrator: filters, quarantine, forwarding and allow-lists.
Test the site’s outgoing mail path
Do not test only the password form. Send a normal site message, such as a controlled test from the configured mail plugin, and compare the result with the reset attempt. If both fail, the problem is probably transport or authentication. If ordinary messages arrive but reset messages do not, inspect user-account details, message content rules and any security plugin that modifies password notifications.
Check the configured sender
Review the “From” address used by WordPress. It should be an address the selected mail provider permits and, for a custom domain, one covered by that domain’s authentication policy. An arbitrary or misspelled sender can cause rejection or aggressive filtering.
Review SMTP or API settings
For an authenticated SMTP connection, verify the host name, port, encryption mode and username/password supplied by the mail provider. A mismatch between the required encryption mode and the selected port can prevent connection. Re-enter credentials rather than assuming a saved value is current, and check whether the provider has revoked or rotated them.
If the provider supports an API transport, compare its authentication and logging requirements with SMTP. Either method can work; the useful choice is the one compatible with the host and plugins and that gives you actionable delivery records.
Read the mail and SMTP logs
Enable the mail plugin’s debug log, or inspect the host’s mail log when available. Look for the first concrete failure:

- Connection refused or timed out: the host, port or outbound firewall policy is wrong or unavailable.
- Authentication failed: the username, password, token or authentication mode is invalid.
- TLS or certificate error: encryption settings do not match the provider or the server’s certificate trust is incomplete.
- Message accepted by relay: WordPress handed off the message; continue with provider delivery, bounce and recipient-filter records.
- Rejected or bounced: follow the provider’s stated reason, which may identify an unauthenticated domain, invalid recipient or policy block.
A successful handoff is not the same as Inbox placement. Keep the provider’s event or bounce record with the time and recipient address so the host or mail administrator can trace it.
Authenticate the sending domain
When a self-hosted site sends from a custom domain, the receiving provider may reject or quarantine mail that is not authenticated. Confirm that the DNS records required by your selected mail provider are present and correct:
SPF
SPF identifies the servers authorized to send for the domain. Follow the provider’s exact record requirements and avoid creating conflicting or incomplete SPF records.
DKIM
DKIM adds a cryptographic signature that the receiving server checks against a public DNS key. Ensure the selector and public key match the provider’s instructions.
DMARC and provider policy
DMARC tells receiving systems how to evaluate messages that fail SPF or DKIM alignment. A strict policy can reject a password-reset message when the visible From domain does not align with the authenticated transport. Review the provider’s alignment requirements and any rejection event before loosening a policy.

These are DNS and mail-provider tasks, not password tasks. If you do not control DNS, give the exact SPF/DKIM/DMARC requirements and the provider’s error message to the domain administrator. Do not guess at record values.
Use an administrator to reset the password directly
If you still have a working administrator account, you do not need the email workflow.
- Sign in to WordPress.
- Open Users > All Users.
- Select the affected user and choose Edit.
- Use the password field’s generated password or enter a strong replacement.
- Save the user profile, then give the new password to the account owner through a secure channel.
Use the least-privileged administrator who can perform the change. Do not send a new password through the same mailbox that is failing, and require the user to replace the temporary credential after signing in.

Recover access when nobody can log in
WordPress.org’s password-reset documentation notes that there is more than one way to reset a password. File- and database-level methods carry greater risk than the dashboard, so make a complete site and database backup first and restrict access to the person responsible for the site.
WP-CLI
With shell access and WP-CLI installed, identify the user and update its password from the WordPress installation directory. A typical pattern is:

wp user update <user-id-or-login> --user_pass='use-a-long-unique-password'Use a password that is not reused elsewhere, protect shell history and process logs, and remove any temporary credential from shared notes. The exact command options available depend on the installed WP-CLI version; confirm the command’s help output on the server before running it.
phpMyAdmin or MySQL
The official reset guide documents a database route through phpMyAdmin/MySQL. Use the guide’s method for writing a WordPress-compatible password hash rather than placing a plaintext password in the database. Select the correct database and user row, because a hosting account may contain several WordPress installations. Back up the database and record the table prefix before editing anything.

When database access is difficult, the official guide also documents an emergency password-reset script uploaded through FTP. Treat this as a temporary recovery tool:
- Download or copy the script only from the documented WordPress source.
- Upload it to the correct site and protect the file from public discovery while it is present.
- Run it once to set the password, then sign in normally.
- Delete the script immediately after recovery and verify that it is no longer reachable.
Leaving an emergency script on a public site can give an attacker a path to change accounts. If you cannot verify the site, database or file location, stop and ask the host or a qualified administrator rather than experimenting on production files.

Choose a delivery repair that fits the site
There is no universal provider or guaranteed delivery time. Compare the available path against the site’s requirements rather than selecting a service solely because it can send one test message.

For any option, verify six points: authenticated SMTP or API support, delivery and bounce logs, SPF/DKIM/DMARC assistance, compatibility with the host and plugins, administrator access required, and recurring costs or provider limits. The available evidence does not establish a single best provider, a universal price or a guaranteed delivery interval.

Verify the repair without locking yourself out again
- Confirm the affected user’s email address in the profile while an administrator is signed in.
- Send a controlled test message to that address and inspect both the recipient mailbox and the provider log.
- Use Lost your password? once, then search all folders for the new message.
- Follow the reset link and sign in with the new password.
- Remove temporary debug output, emergency scripts and exposed credentials.
- Document the working sender address, transport, DNS records and recovery administrator for the next incident.
If the test reaches the mailbox but the reset message does not, compare the two messages in the mail log and inspect security or notification plugins that alter password emails. If neither reaches the mailbox, return to the transport and authentication logs instead of repeatedly requesting new links.
Security precautions during recovery
- Use a complete backup before database or file edits.
- Never publish a password, SMTP secret or API token in a support forum or shared document.
- Use a temporary, unique password and replace it after the account owner signs in.
- Remove emergency scripts and disable verbose mail logs when troubleshooting is complete.
- Limit administrator and hosting access to the people who need it.
- Preserve rejection and bounce details for the host or mail provider rather than deleting logs before the cause is known.
A wp_mail() success result only confirms that WordPress processed a send request. Reliable recovery requires all of the following to line up: the correct user email, an accessible mailbox, a functioning outgoing transport, valid authentication, accepted DNS policy and a recipient system that does not filter the message.
