For one ordinary WordPress site, choose a VPS that runs a currently supported PHP release, MySQL or MariaDB, HTTPS, and Apache or Nginx on SSD or NVMe storage. The right CPU and RAM depend on your plugins, theme, database activity, traffic concurrency, and caching—not on a universal “WordPress VPS” number. Start with measured headroom, then resize when CPU, PHP workers, memory, database load, or disk I/O becomes the bottleneck.

What WordPress officially requires
WordPress core has a short technical baseline. WordPress.org currently recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended because both have the rewrite and configuration support WordPress sites commonly need, although any server that supports PHP and MySQL can run the software.

That does not mean every VPS is equally suitable. Backups, monitoring, storage performance, security updates, and recovery access determine whether the site remains usable when something fails.
Use supported releases, not legacy compatibility floors
Older versions may still install, but they are a poor basis for a new deployment. PHP 7.4 and MySQL 5.5.5 are end-of-life compatibility floors, not sensible targets for a production VPS. They no longer receive normal security maintenance and can leave a site exposed.

The WordPress Hosting Team recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production. Its lifecycle guidance records PHP 8.3 as moving to security-only support on December 31, 2025, while PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on December 31, 2026. For a WordPress 6.9 installation, the team recommends PHP 8.3.x or 8.4.x, MySQL 8.0.x or 8.4.x, or MariaDB 10.11.x or 11.4.x. WordPress 6.9 lists backward-compatible minimums of PHP 7.4+, MySQL 5.7+, and MariaDB 10.3+, but those minimums should not override the newer production guidance.
Database support changes over time. The Hosting Team lists MySQL 8.0 LTS and 8.4 LTS, plus MariaDB 10.6, 10.11, 11.4, and 11.8 LTS lines with their own lifecycle dates. Check the current lifecycle before ordering a server, and make sure your VPS lets you upgrade without rebuilding the site.

How much RAM does WordPress need on a VPS?
Separate the PHP process limit from the VPS’s physical memory. The WordPress Hosting Handbook publishes three PHP memory_limit starting points:

These are per-PHP-process limits. The VPS must also hold Linux, the web server, PHP-FPM workers, database buffers, optional object caching, monitoring agents, backup jobs, and temporary files. If several PHP workers run at once, their practical memory use can add up quickly. Raising memory_limit on an undersized VPS can cause swapping or an out-of-memory kill rather than fixing the underlying problem.
Is 1 GB of RAM enough for WordPress?
It can be workable for a very small, lightly visited site with a simple theme, few plugins, efficient page caching, and a carefully configured stack. It leaves little room for simultaneous PHP workers, database growth, backups, administrative imports, or traffic spikes, so treat it as a constrained starting point rather than a general recommendation.

A site that runs a visual page builder, membership features, multilingual processing, frequent scheduled jobs, or an online store needs materially more headroom. Instead of choosing a number from a chart, watch resident memory, swap activity, PHP-FPM worker saturation, and response time during the busiest tasks. If swap is being used regularly or workers are queued, add RAM or reduce concurrency and workload.

Product searches, cart and checkout sessions, scheduled actions, payment callbacks, stock updates, and reporting are dynamic operations. They bypass some page caches and create more database and PHP work than a mostly static brochure page. The Hosting Team’s 512M-or-more PHP starting point is a useful warning for WooCommerce and similar workloads, but it is not a promise that a particular VPS size will handle a given catalog or sales peak.
What CPU do you need for a WordPress VPS?
There is no honest universal vCPU minimum. A low-traffic site can run on a small shared-resource VPS; a busy store, page-builder site, import job, or multilingual installation can saturate the same nominal vCPU count. Provider labels such as “WordPress optimized” do not reveal whether a vCPU is dedicated, burstable, throttled, or shared with neighboring tenants.
Compare CPU capacity using sustained behavior rather than the advertised count:
- Shared versus dedicated vCPU: determine whether neighbors can reduce your available compute.
- Burst policy: ask how long a plan can burst and what happens after the allowance is exhausted.
- Throttling: verify whether sustained CPU use is capped and whether the provider publishes the cap.
- Worker capacity: check whether PHP-FPM workers are waiting for CPU during dynamic requests.
- Database contention: slow queries can make a site feel CPU-bound even when PHP itself is not saturated.
Do you need two or four vCPUs?
Choose the smaller allocation when measurements show that the site has spare CPU and its work is mostly cache hits. Move to more vCPUs when concurrent PHP requests queue, scheduled imports compete with visitors, database queries consume a core for sustained periods, or response time rises during predictable peaks. Four vCPUs are not automatically faster if the workload is waiting on disk, an unindexed query, or insufficient RAM.

After resizing, confirm the result with the same traffic pattern. A useful change should reduce CPU saturation or request queues without simply moving the bottleneck to memory or storage.
Storage: SSD versus NVMe and how much space to buy
WordPress performs many small reads and writes: PHP files and plugins are loaded, media metadata and uploads change, logs grow, and database tables are updated. SSD-backed storage is therefore preferable to spinning disks. NVMe can provide lower latency and higher throughput than conventional SSD storage, which is most noticeable during database activity, backups, plugin updates, and concurrent requests.
Do not size the disk from the WordPress core download. Add together the current uploads and themes, the database, generated image sizes, logs, staging copies, local backups, temporary import files, and a recovery margin. Keep enough free space for database maintenance and updates; a nearly full volume can make a healthy application fail.

No universal official gigabyte minimum is published for WordPress. The correct capacity is the measured content footprint plus growth and recovery space.

MySQL-compatible database
WordPress stores posts, settings, users, commerce data, and plugin records in MySQL or MariaDB. For new deployments, use a currently supported LTS line rather than an old compatibility minimum. Confirm the VPS’s connection limits, available buffer memory, backup method, and whether the database is local or managed separately. A remote managed database can simplify operations, but network latency and connection limits become part of the design.

Apache, Nginx, LiteSpeed, and rewrite support
Apache and Nginx are the official robust choices. The WordPress 6.9 compatibility information also lists supported LiteSpeed and OpenLiteSpeed versions. Whichever server you select, confirm that it can apply WordPress rewrite rules, pass PHP requests to PHP-FPM or an equivalent handler, serve HTTPS correctly, and protect configuration files and uploads.
HTTPS is a requirement, not an optional optimization
Use a valid TLS certificate, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, and renew the certificate automatically. Check that administrative, login, API, payment, and media URLs do not create mixed-content errors. HTTPS protects credentials and session traffic and is expected by modern browsers and many integrations.
A practical VPS sizing process
Use this sequence when selecting or resizing a server:
- Inventory the workload. Record the number of sites, estimated concurrent visitors, page-cache coverage, plugin and theme stack, media volume, scheduled jobs, imports, and whether WooCommerce or another dynamic application is present.
- Verify the software matrix. Confirm the offered PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, web server, TLS, and WordPress versions. Check lifecycle dates and the upgrade path before committing.
- Measure the current bottleneck. During normal and peak activity, record CPU saturation, PHP-FPM worker exhaustion, database load and slow queries, disk I/O latency, memory pressure, swap, and end-user response time.
- Reserve operational capacity. Leave memory and disk for the operating system, database buffers, object cache, monitoring, backups, staging, updates, and sudden traffic rather than allocating every resource to PHP.
- Choose storage for I/O and recovery. Prefer SSD or NVMe, verify IOPS and durability information, and calculate space from content, growth, backups, logs, and staging.
- Test the busiest operation. Exercise checkout, search, login, publishing, imports, image generation, or another workload that bypasses full-page caching. A homepage cache hit is not a capacity test for dynamic work.
- Resize based on evidence. Add RAM for memory pressure and swapping, CPU for sustained compute saturation, faster or larger storage for I/O latency or capacity, and database tuning or indexing when queries are the actual cause.
Managed versus self-managed VPS operations
A managed VPS is an operations choice, not a WordPress hardware specification. Compare what the service actually includes:
- Operating-system and PHP security updates, with a stated maintenance window.
- Firewall controls, SSH or console access, malware response, and hardening responsibilities.
- Automated backups, retention, off-server storage, and a documented restore test.
- Monitoring for uptime, disk space, CPU, memory, services, and certificate expiry.
- Database administration, staging support, migration assistance, and escalation coverage.
- A clear upgrade path for RAM, vCPUs, storage, and server geography.
Self-managed hosting can provide more control and lower service overhead, but you must perform updates, configure backups, secure SSH, monitor failures, and rehearse recovery. In either model, ask where the server is located relative to the audience; distance affects latency, while the ability to scale matters when traffic grows.

Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Buying by vCPU count alone
Two plans with the same count can have very different sustained performance. Check shared-resource policy, throttling, and benchmark or monitoring data supplied for the exact plan.
Treating PHP memory_limit as VPS RAM
A 256M or 512M PHP limit applies to a process. It does not reserve that amount for the whole server. Keep explicit capacity for all services and simultaneous workers.
Ignoring cache bypasses
Logged-in users, carts, checkout, search, APIs, previews, and many administrative actions are dynamic. Size and test for those requests, not only anonymous cached pages.
Filling the disk with local backups
Local copies are useful for quick rollback but can consume the same volume needed by the live database. Retain an off-server copy and verify that a restore works before relying on it.
Choosing obsolete software because it is available
An old PHP or database version may satisfy a compatibility floor while failing security and support expectations. Select a supported line and confirm how upgrades will be handled.

- Does the plan support a current production PHP release, MySQL or MariaDB LTS version, HTTPS, and WordPress rewrite rules?
- Is 256M PHP memory a sensible default for your plugin and theme set, or does the workload justify a 512M-or-more starting point?
- Will Linux, the database, PHP workers, caches, monitoring, backups, and bursts fit in physical RAM without regular swap use?
- Are vCPUs shared, burstable, or throttled, and can you add capacity without a migration?
- Does SSD or NVMe storage have enough I/O performance, free-space margin, and durability for the database and backups?
- How are backups retained, stored off-server, and restored?
- Where is the server located, and is support available for the operations you cannot perform yourself?
The best WordPress VPS is the smallest supported configuration that keeps measured headroom under your real workload while providing a safe upgrade and recovery path. Recheck software lifecycles and resource graphs after major plugin, theme, traffic, or commerce changes.
