For a failed or stopped download, note the exact error, close Battle.net and wait for its Agent process to exit, then reopen the app. If that does not help, try Blizzard’s repair and connection troubleshooting steps before contacting support.
First, confirm what is happening
A slow download is not necessarily frozen: a brief pause alone does not prove that the patch has stopped. Note the exact error wording or code before changing settings. Blizzard advises looking up the specific error or problem description because a separate support article may address it. Its support search also identifies “How to troubleshoot a slow game download” as a relevant topic: Blizzard support search.
Check that Battle.net is updating the WoW version you intend to play. World of Warcraft versions and game modes are installed separately through the Battle.net desktop app; see Blizzard’s World of Warcraft installation guidance.
If the download is slow but still moving
Check Battle.net’s download limit
Open Battle.net’s settings and look under Network Bandwidth for download limits. Blizzard support-forum guidance recommends checking this setting when downloads are slow. If a limit is enabled, change it only if you meant to allow faster downloading and your connection or data plan can accommodate it. Removing a limit does not guarantee a particular speed.

Allow for possible congestion
Network congestion can be one explanation for a slow download, particularly at busy times, but the available Blizzard congestion guidance is historical rather than a report on current service conditions. In a support-forum post dated April 2, 2020, Blizzard wrote: “As a result of increased network demand on the internet at large, we’ve seen an impact on players’ download speeds when trying to install or update their games.” Treat that as general context, not confirmation of a current outage or slowdown. If the app is still making progress, leaving it running may be more useful than repeatedly restarting it.
If the download has stopped or failed
Restart Battle.net and its Agent process
- Record the error code or wording shown by Battle.net.
- Close the Battle.net desktop app completely.
- Open Task Manager and wait until Agent.exe is no longer running.
- Reopen Battle.net and retry the download.
- If it still fails, restart the computer and try once more.
Blizzard lists this approach for download error BLZBNTAGT000008A3. If you see a different error, search Blizzard support for that exact code or wording rather than assuming the same cause.

If the problem keeps returning
Repair the installed game files
In Battle.net, select World of Warcraft and use the app’s Scan and Repair option to check for damaged game files. Blizzard includes this among its troubleshooting steps for WoW technical problems.
Check connection and security-software interference
- If you are using Wi-Fi, try Blizzard’s recommended wireless-connection optimization steps or test whether the connection is more reliable on a wired connection.
- Check that your security software allows Blizzard software to connect. Change exceptions only for Blizzard components you recognize and trust.
- Close other applications that may conflict with the update or use resources while it runs.
- Restart the computer and optimize the internet connection if you have not already done so.
These are general troubleshooting options, not a promise that any one change will resolve every slow or failed patch. The reviewed Blizzard guidance does not establish deleting folders, reinstalling WoW, changing DNS, using a VPN, or buying networking equipment as universal first-line fixes.

When to contact Blizzard support
If the update still fails after these steps, contact Blizzard’s World of Warcraft technical support. Include the exact error code or message, the WoW version being updated, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. That information helps distinguish a stalled download from a specific error that needs its own fix.
