How to Adjust PS5 Resolution, HDR, and 120 Hz Settings for Your TV

Set PS5 resolution, HDR and 120 Hz for your TV, then troubleshoot missing 4K output or flicker by checking the full HDMI signal path.

Adjust PS5 display settings at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Start with Resolution set to Automatic, choose an HDR mode that matches how you want SDR content handled, and enable 120 Hz Output only when both your TV and the game support it. The TV, HDMI port, cable, receiver and console settings all need to support the signal you expect.

Where to find PS5 video settings

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Open Video Output Information to see the capabilities the connected HDMI device reports, including resolution, HDR and VRR.

Sony says the console detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. Menu labels may vary slightly by locale or system software version.

How to set resolution

Use Automatic for a typical setup

Under Resolution, leave the setting at Automatic as a sensible starting point. Sony says this selects the highest resolution the TV supports. To configure 4K specifically, select 2160p, provided the TV and the entire HDMI signal path support it.

Test a 1440p display

If you use a supported 1440p display, choose Test 1440p Output to check SDR and HDR at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, as well as VRR. Sony notes that results vary by TV. To use 1440p after testing, set Resolution to 1440p.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How to choose an HDR setting

In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, select HDR to choose how the PS5 handles HDR and SDR content.

  • On When Supported: HDR-compatible content can use HDR; games and apps that are not HDR-compatible remain in SDR.
  • Always On: converts output from non-HDR-compatible games and apps to HDR.

Use Adjust HDR to follow the console’s brightness and HDR-rendering adjustment process. There is no single HDR choice or adjustment that is right for every TV; choose based on the content and picture you prefer.

How to enable 120 Hz Output

Set 120 Hz Output to enabled when the TV supports 120 Hz and the game offers a 120 Hz frame-rate mode. This setting allows compatible output; it does not make every game run at 120 frames per second. If a game causes display problems on a monitor or other display, Sony recommends turning 120 Hz Output off.

VRR and ALLM options

Variable Refresh Rate

VRR adjusts the display’s refresh rate in real time when supported by the TV and game. Sony cautions that results vary by TV. The PS5 also offers an option to apply VRR to unsupported games; turn that option off if it causes unexpected behavior.

Auto Low Latency Mode

On an ALLM-capable TV, ALLM can switch the TV to a low-latency mode while gaming. Turning ALLM off does not fully prevent low-latency behavior during VRR output; turn VRR off as well if you want to disable that behavior entirely.

Fix missing 4K/120 Hz output or screen flicker

If the screen is blank when you expect 4K/120 Hz, or the PS5 falls back to 1080p/120 Hz, check the full connection from the console to the display. Sony states that PS5 supports 4K and HDR, and supports 4K 120 Hz video output and HDMI 2.1. That support does not guarantee every TV input, receiver or other device in the chain can pass the same modes.

  1. Confirm the TV and input support the mode. Check the TV model’s specifications and make sure you are using an HDMI port that supports 4K/120 Hz. Some TVs require enabling an enhanced HDMI mode in the TV’s own settings; consult its manual for the correct input and menu option.
  2. Update the TV firmware. Install any current firmware update offered for the TV.
  3. Isolate intermediary equipment. If a receiver or other device sits between the PS5 and TV, connect the PS5 directly to the TV temporarily to see whether that device is preventing the signal from passing through.
  4. Check the HDMI cable. Try the cable supplied with the PS5 first. If replacing it, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A cable cannot make an incompatible TV input, receiver or game support a mode it lacks.
  5. Check PS5 output settings. Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, and set Video Transfer Rate to Automatic.
  6. Reduce transfer rate if the image flickers. Try Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2. Sony says limiting the rate may improve picture quality when flicker occurs, but it restricts some output formats and modes.
Video Transfer Rate Output limitations Sony identifies
-1 Limits 4K/120 Hz and some 4K 50/60 Hz RGB/YUV444 DeepColor output.
-2 Limits 4K/120 Hz and 4K 50/60 Hz RGB/YUV444 output.

These settings are compatibility workarounds, not upgrades: use them only if needed to address flicker, because they limit available output.

What to verify before changing hardware

Check the specifications for each part of the setup rather than relying on an HDMI version label alone. The TV’s specific input, any receiver or switch, and the game all matter. Confirm the supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR features, and whether an intermediary device passes the same signal. If one part does not support the desired mode, changing the PS5 setting or buying a cable will not add that capability.
