If World of Warcraft will not open, first verify that your PC meets Blizzard’s current Windows requirements and that you selected the correct WoW edition in Battle.net. Then update Windows and your graphics driver, remove compatibility-mode settings, and repair the Battle.net or game installation. A launcher that changes from Launching back to Play, or a WoW.exe process with no visible window, is a symptom rather than a diagnosis.
What “WoW won’t launch” usually looks like
Launch failures are not all the same. The correct fix depends on where the startup sequence stops:

- Play changes to Launching and then returns to Play: Battle.net started a launch attempt but did not keep the game running. A damaged installation, incompatible software setting, outdated driver or unmet requirement can all produce this pattern.
- WoW.exe appears in Task Manager but no window opens: The process may be starting and closing, or the window may be blocked before it becomes visible. This report appears in Blizzard community discussions, but it does not prove one universal cause.
- An explicit error message appears: Record its exact wording before closing it. The text can distinguish a missing file, permissions problem, graphics initialization failure or account-related issue.
- Battle.net itself will not open: Repairing or reinstalling the launcher is more relevant than changing in-game settings.
Do not assume that a process in Task Manager means the game is working, and do not assume that every launch failure is caused by an add-on. Treat the visible behavior as evidence for the next check.
1. Check Blizzard’s current PC requirements
Blizzard states that failing the requirements can cause technical problems or an inability to launch. Its current Windows minimums are:

These specifications are Blizzard’s current Windows guidance and can change as the game is updated. Check your edition’s requirements before buying hardware: Modern WoW and each Classic edition are installed separately and can have different minimums.
How to verify the essentials in Windows
- Open Settings → System → About to check the Windows edition, system type and processor information. The system must be 64-bit for the stated minimum.
- Open Settings → System → Storage and confirm that at least 128 GB is available on the SSD where WoW is installed. The figure is free space, not the drive’s total capacity.
- Open Task Manager → Performance to see installed memory and identify the GPU. Your graphics hardware must support DirectX 12 and meet the memory requirement.
- If your PC is below a documented minimum, software repairs cannot make it compliant. An SSD or other hardware upgrade is relevant only after this check identifies a real shortfall.
2. Confirm the WoW edition and installation
All WoW versions are installed through the Battle.net desktop app. Select the WoW icon and, if necessary, open All Games to find it. Confirm that you are working with the intended product:

Each appears as a separate Battle.net installation. Selecting one edition while troubleshooting another can make you repair the wrong files or compare your PC with the wrong requirements. Check the installation location shown by Battle.net and ensure the drive still exists and has free space.

3. Update Windows and the graphics driver
Blizzard’s launch-error guidance specifically recommends updating the operating system and graphics drivers for compatibility problems. Perform both updates before deeper repair work.

Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install all available updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update after restarting. Repeat until no further updates are offered, including any optional driver update that your hardware manufacturer identifies as appropriate.
Update the GPU driver from the manufacturer
- Identify the graphics adapter in Task Manager → Performance → GPU, or in Device Manager → Display adapters.
- Use the GPU manufacturer’s official Windows driver for that exact model and your Windows version. Choose the current driver package, install it, and restart the PC.
- Try WoW again from Battle.net. If a recent driver introduced the problem, note the driver version and the date; that information is useful when you contact Blizzard.
Do not skip the operating-system update just because another game works. WoW’s compatibility check can fail independently of other titles.
4. Remove Windows compatibility mode
Blizzard warns that the Battle.net desktop app and Battle.net games may not work correctly in Windows compatibility mode. A compatibility setting left over from an older installation can therefore block launch.

- Close Battle.net and any WoW process in Task Manager.
- Find the Battle.net shortcut or executable, open Properties, and select the Compatibility tab.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode for if it is selected. Also review any administrator or high-DPI compatibility overrides you deliberately enabled and remove them temporarily while testing.
- Locate the WoW executable in the game’s installation folder and repeat the check on its Compatibility tab.
- Apply the changes, reopen Battle.net normally and test the correct WoW edition.
Menu names can vary slightly by Windows release. The important result is that neither Battle.net nor the WoW executable is being forced into an older Windows mode.

A damaged download or interrupted update can make the launcher return to Play without opening the game. Use Battle.net’s built-in repair function for the edition you selected.

- Open Battle.net and select the WoW icon.
- Open the game’s options menu (often represented by a gear beside the Play button).
- Choose the available Scan and Repair, Repair or equivalent file-verification command. The exact label can change with Battle.net updates.
- Allow the scan to finish. Do not launch the game or shut down the PC while files are being replaced.
- Restart Battle.net and Windows, then test again.
If Battle.net itself appears damaged, Blizzard’s troubleshooting guidance includes uninstalling and reinstalling the Battle.net desktop app. Reinstalling the launcher is different from reinstalling WoW: confirm the game folder and edition before removing anything, and allow the app to rediscover an existing installation when that option is offered.

Launching returns to Play
- Recheck the selected edition and its installation path.
- Confirm Windows and the graphics driver are current.
- Remove compatibility mode from both Battle.net and WoW.
- Run Scan and Repair, restart, and try again.
- Record any new error text rather than repeatedly clicking Play.
WoW.exe is present but no window appears
- Wait briefly after one launch attempt, then open Task Manager and note whether the process remains, disappears or repeatedly respawns.
- End the stalled WoW process, close Battle.net, restart Windows and test once more after the repair and update steps.
- Check whether another Battle.net game opens. If other games launch, include that comparison in your support report; it narrows the scope without proving a single cause.
- Capture your Windows version, GPU model and driver version, WoW edition, exact behavior and any error text.
Battle.net opens, but the game never starts after an update
Verify that the update completed and that the installation drive has the required free space. Run the repair scan for the same edition, then restart the launcher and PC. If the launcher itself is unstable, reinstall Battle.net before removing the game files.
Software repair or hardware upgrade?
Use the requirements check to decide where to spend effort. The distinction prevents buying hardware for a software fault and prevents endless repair attempts on a PC that is below the minimum.

7. Escalate with useful evidence
If the ordered checks do not restore launch, use Blizzard’s World of Warcraft technical-support forums or another official Blizzard support path. Include:
- The exact WoW edition: Modern WoW, WoW Classic Era or Cataclysm Classic.
- Windows edition and 64-bit status.
- CPU, GPU, installed RAM and available SSD space.
- GPU driver version and when it was installed.
- Whether Windows and Battle.net were updated, compatibility mode was disabled, and Scan and Repair completed.
- The exact sequence: for example, “Play changes to Launching, then returns to Play,” or “WoW.exe remains in Task Manager with no window.”
- Whether other Battle.net games launch and any exact error text.
Do not claim that a particular add-on, antivirus setting or hardware part is responsible without evidence from your case. Blizzard does not publish a universal success rate or guaranteed repair time for this symptom, so support will need the details above to investigate.
