Cataclysm Classic comes immediately after Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Once you finish Cataclysm’s progression, the sequence continues into Mists of Pandaria Classic. Cataclysm Classic launched on May 20, 2024, and Mists of Pandaria Classic launched on July 21, 2025.
As of Blizzard’s December 2025 update, Mists of Pandaria Classic was still receiving progression content, including the Thunder King update. Blizzard’s official announcements establish Mists of Pandaria Classic as the latest confirmed point in this sequence; they do not establish a subsequent Classic expansion.

The WoW Classic expansion order after Wrath
There is no fork between Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria if you are following the Classic progression realms. The order is linear: Wrath of the Lich King Classic, then Cataclysm Classic, then Mists of Pandaria Classic.

Blizzard announced the planned Wrath-to-Cataclysm transition at BlizzCon on November 3, 2023. Its later launch notice confirms that the transition happened, rather than remaining only a roadmap item.

What comes immediately after Wrath Classic?
Cataclysm Classic is the next expansion
Cataclysm Classic is the direct successor to Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Its central change is a reshaped version of the original Azeroth: Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms are altered by the cataclysm, so familiar leveling routes, landscapes and questing hubs do not remain exactly as they were in earlier Classic versions.
The expansion raises the level cap from 80 to 85. It adds the Goblin and Worgen player races, introduces Archaeology as a profession, and adds transmogrification for changing the appearance of eligible gear while retaining its underlying equipment functionality. Cataclysm also supplies new zones, dungeons and raids for characters moving beyond Wrath’s endgame.
Important Cataclysm dates
- November 3, 2023: Blizzard announced that Classic progression realms would advance from Wrath Classic to Cataclysm Classic.
- May 1, 2024: Blizzard’s pre-expansion patch notice identified the Cataclysm pre-expansion patch date.
- May 20, 2024: Cataclysm Classic launched.
The pre-expansion patch and the full launch are different milestones. A patch can change systems and prepare characters for the new expansion before the expansion’s complete zone, dungeon and raid progression is available. If you are checking an old leveling guide, verify whether it describes the pre-expansion period or the post-launch game.

What changes when you move from Wrath to Cataclysm?
The world is no longer the Wrath-era map
Wrath characters return to a world transformed in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. That matters if you are using route guides, flight-path instructions or quest coordinates from earlier Classic phases. A guide written for Original WoW Classic or Wrath Classic may point you toward content that has been replaced or reorganized in Cataclysm.

Character progression continues to level 85
Cataclysm’s level cap is 85, compared with Wrath’s cap of 80. The five-level increase is paired with new zones and dungeons rather than being only a numerical extension. Characters that are already level 80 can begin the Cataclysm leveling path, while players who stopped earlier may need to finish remaining Wrath-era progression before using the new content efficiently.
Two playable races join the progression
Cataclysm adds Goblins and Worgen. These are not merely cosmetic additions: each provides a new starting experience and expands the available race choices for players beginning or rerolling characters during Cataclysm’s era.
Archaeology and transmogrification change how you play
Archaeology adds a new profession-focused activity centered on uncovering artifacts. Transmogrification addresses appearance: it lets you change how qualifying gear looks without treating the visual model as the item’s primary statistics. Together, these systems give Cataclysm progression a different mix of collection, customization and endgame goals than Wrath had.

What comes after Cataclysm Classic?
Mists of Pandaria Classic follows Cataclysm
Mists of Pandaria Classic is the next step after Cataclysm Classic. Blizzard announced its launch for July 21, 2025, and described access through an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. The expansion moves the setting to Pandaria, adds the Pandaren race and introduces the Monk class.

The level cap rises from 85 to 90. As with Cataclysm, the increase is accompanied by new zones, dungeons and raids. Mists of Pandaria is therefore not a separate alternative to Cataclysm for progression players; it is the stage that follows it.
The Thunder King update is part of the current confirmed endpoint
Blizzard’s December 12, 2025 weekly update confirmed that new Mists of Pandaria Classic content was live. It specifically described the Thunder King update, including the Isle of Thunder, the Isle of Giants and the Throne of Thunder raid.
This is the latest confirmed progression point in the official announcements covered here. It is safer to describe Mists of Pandaria Classic as the latest confirmed Classic expansion than to state that it is definitively the final one. Blizzard’s cited notices do not establish what, if anything, comes next.

How to decide what to play next
If you want the intended Classic journey
Play Cataclysm Classic first, then move to Mists of Pandaria Classic. This follows the progression order Blizzard announced and later delivered. It also keeps the level-cap increases and world changes in their intended context.
If you are returning after a long break
Start by identifying the expansion your character and realm currently use. A level-80 character associated with Wrath-era content may be ready for Cataclysm progression, but a guide based on an older Classic phase can contain obsolete locations or system advice. Confirm the current realm and account status in the World of Warcraft client before relying on a leveling checklist.
If you are choosing based on features
- Choose the Cataclysm stage if the reshaped original continents, Goblin or Worgen characters, Archaeology and transmogrification are the features you want to experience.
- Choose the Mists of Pandaria stage after completing Cataclysm if Pandaria, Pandaren characters, the Monk class and the level-90 progression cap are your priorities.
- Choose based on sequence rather than preference if you want to see the story and level progression in order; Mists of Pandaria does not replace Cataclysm in that route.
A practical progression checklist
- Finish or confirm your Wrath position. Check whether your character is at or near level 80 and whether you are playing on the Classic progression realm type that advances through expansions.
- Move into Cataclysm Classic. Use Cataclysm-era questing and dungeon information, not an unchanged Wrath or Original WoW route. Expect the Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms maps to differ.
- Level from 80 to 85. Explore the Cataclysm zones and use its new dungeons and raids as your character develops.
- Try the new systems if they fit your goals. Archaeology and transmogrification are optional activities, but they are among Cataclysm’s defining additions.
- Continue into Mists of Pandaria Classic. After Cataclysm progression, follow the Pandaria content and level from 85 to 90.
- Check the current content phase. Blizzard’s December 2025 notice recorded the Thunder King update and its associated islands and raid. Live content can change, so check the current in-game and account notices when you return.
Access and subscription requirements
Blizzard’s Mists of Pandaria Classic launch announcement states that access is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. The cited official material does not establish a requirement to purchase a physical copy of the game to follow this progression.
Account terms, regional availability and subscription policies can change. Verify the current account page and launcher information for your region before paying for Game Time or assuming that an older purchase arrangement still applies. The access statement above reflects Blizzard’s launch announcement, not a promise that account policies will never be revised.

Is there a Classic expansion after Mists of Pandaria?
The official notices covered here do not establish a later expansion after Mists of Pandaria Classic. They confirm Cataclysm after Wrath, Mists of Pandaria after Cataclysm, and the Thunder King content update during Mists of Pandaria’s progression.
That makes Mists of Pandaria Classic the latest confirmed point in this article’s sequence, not a guaranteed endpoint for all future Classic development. Treat any claim about another expansion as unconfirmed until Blizzard publishes a new official announcement.
Common mistakes when searching for the next expansion
Confusing the live game with the Classic sequence
World of Warcraft’s modern release history and Classic progression are related but not interchangeable. The order here concerns the Classic progression path that began with Original WoW Classic, continued through The Burning Crusade Classic and Wrath of the Lich King Classic, and then advanced to Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria.

Mists of Pandaria’s later launch date does not make it the immediate successor to Wrath. Cataclysm is the expansion directly after Wrath, and Mists of Pandaria follows Cataclysm.
Treating announcement dates as launch dates
Blizzard’s November 3, 2023 announcement described the planned transition. The completed Cataclysm launch occurred on May 20, 2024. Likewise, the Mists of Pandaria launch date was July 21, 2025, while the December 2025 notice documented later content within that expansion. Use launch and update dates for the event being discussed.
