For Phase 8 of WoW Classic Season of Discovery, Hunter BiS depends on your build: ranged Hunters, two-handed melee Hunters, and dual-wield melee Hunters need different gear. The latest cited Wowhead guides cover Patch 1.15.8: its ranged guide was updated July 15, 2026, and its melee guide August 14, 2026. Their lists are recommendations, not a single universal ranking; melee gear and set bonuses may still be adjusted.
Choose your Hunter build before choosing gear
Ranged and melee Hunters have distinct gear plans. The Phase 8 ranged guide favors Pet Ranged, while the melee guide covers both two-handed and dual-wield setups. The right comparison is therefore not just item level or a shared slot-by-slot list: account for your build, weapon setup, hit needs, set bonuses, and the availability of a practical replacement.
- Pet Ranged: The Wowhead ranged guide identifies this as its preferred Phase 8 build and highlights Poleaxe of the Beast with Focus Fire, which benefits both Hunter and pet.
- Melee: The Wowhead guide presents viable two-handed and dual-wield approaches. It says changing weapon setup requires only limited gear changes, at most a ring and trinket.
Wowhead’s guides are the most recently dated sources in the material available here: the ranged guide is labeled Patch 1.15.8 and dated July 15, 2026; the melee guide is dated August 14, 2026. The melee guide specifically warns that Scarlet Enclave items and set bonuses may be adjusted, so confirm its recommendations against the current game before committing to a long-term gear plan.
Phase 8 ranged Hunter gear
For a pet-focused ranged setup, Poleaxe of the Beast is a central weapon recommendation in Wowhead’s Phase 8 guide. The guide pairs it with Focus Fire and explains that the combination benefits the Hunter and pet. It also notes that the Cat version gains from a Cat’s damage and mobility, and can stack Frenzy quickly through Claw. These are build-specific advantages, not a claim that every ranged Hunter should use the same pet or rotation.

Dawnstalker Headpiece and Dawnstalker Tunic are identified as strong Phase 8 pieces, with the Scarlet Enclave named as their source. These examples are not an exhaustive slot-by-slot ranking. Consult the full Wowhead ranged Hunter gear guide for the complete list and its listed alternatives; the guide is labeled Patch 1.15.8 and was updated July 15, 2026.
Pick a ranged playstyle you can execute
The ranged guide distinguishes high-execution weaving from a regular turret approach. Its author, Docoda, writes: “In general, Weaving will always end up with the highest DPS when played at a high level.” That is the guide author’s assessment, not a published measured DPS result. The same guide recommends a regular turret build for volatile fights because it is harder to execute weaving consistently. For gear planning, prioritize the build you intend to play rather than treating a theoretical maximum as an automatic upgrade.

Phase 8 melee Hunter gear
The melee gear plan changes with weapon choice, but the Wowhead guide says the required gear swaps are limited: at most a ring and trinket when switching between its weapon builds. Dawnstalker Visor is its recommended Phase 8 head example, with Cryptstalker Visor listed as a strong alternative. For rings, its recommendations include Band of the Cryptstalker, Mason’s Fraternity Ring, and Baelin’s Band.
The guide also names Ring of the Qiraji Fury as a temporary option if you need additional expertise to reach the guide’s stated 6% cap. Treat that number only in this context: it is a conditional recommendation in Wowhead’s melee guide, not a universal Hunter stat rule.

Do not treat Naxxramas set-count advice as universal
Wowhead’s melee guide describes a Naxxramas-specific gearing constraint: when using rank 2 of the Seal of the Dawn item, eight Sanctified pieces matter to achieving its full effect, even if an individual piece is otherwise suboptimal. The guide says Sanctified equipment has no benefit outside Naxxramas. Apply that trade-off to the relevant Naxxramas setup, not to general Hunter gearing elsewhere.

How to compare BiS candidates and find replacements
BiS lists are most useful as a target, not a requirement to wait for one exact drop. The guides describe gear from raids, dungeons, PvP, professions, world drops, reputation rewards, and quests, and include alternative or replacement pieces. Check the acquisition path alongside the item’s fit for your build so you can decide whether a realistic substitute is worth using while you pursue a listed target.
- Build fit: Confirm whether the item belongs to your ranged, two-handed melee, or dual-wield setup.
- Hit and other stats: Icy Veins states Hit > Agility > Crit > Attack Power > Stamina for its Hunter PvE BiS lists. This is that guide’s stated priority, not a universal simulation result for every build or encounter.
- Weapon and set interactions: Check whether your choice supports the intended weapon setup, pet or playstyle, and any applicable set bonus.
- Source and substitute: Verify whether the item comes from content you can access and use a listed replacement when it better fits your current character or goals.
Icy Veins’ Phase 8 melee, Marksmanship, and Beast Mastery pages include examples such as Dawnstalker Visor, Kaigy’s Clasp, Dawnstalker armor pieces, Corrupted Ashbringer, Poleaxe of the Beast, and Strings of Fate. However, those pages display an April 10, 2025 last-updated date despite containing Phase 8 lists. Use them as a cross-check rather than assuming their rankings reflect later changes. The cited pages are Icy Veins melee gear, Icy Veins Marksmanship gear, and Icy Veins Beast Mastery gear.
