Choose Retail if you want the modern game and its current expansion; choose Classic if you are returning for a particular older-era ruleset, a fresh-start economy, or a one-life challenge. The important qualification is that “Classic” is not one game. Blizzard currently presents several Classic experiences, each with different progression and rules. Your best choice depends on the era, risk level, and community you want—not on a universal claim that one version is better.
A subscription or game time provides access to both modern World of Warcraft and Classic, although Blizzard treats the latest modern expansion as a separate purchase. Check the live terms for your region at Blizzard’s Classic hub before paying or returning to a character.

Retail or Classic: the short decision
Use this quick rule before installing anything:
- Start with Retail when your priority is the current expansion, modern systems, contemporary endgame activity, and the least complicated route back into the ongoing game.
- Start with Classic Era or another specific Classic iteration when you want the historical version of Azeroth itself, a slower fresh start, or a community organized around a particular era.
- Choose Classic Hardcore only if permanent death is part of the appeal. It is not simply a harder difficulty setting: a death ends that character’s Hardcore run.
- Choose Season of Discovery when you want a Classic foundation with class-altering abilities, Rune Engraving, and additional activities rather than a museum-like recreation.
- Choose Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition or Mists of Pandaria Classic when that specific expansion era is the reason you came back.
If your friends already play, their mode and realm ruleset should usually decide the first character. A theoretically ideal version is less useful than one where your group can actually play together.
What “Retail” and “Classic” mean in practice
Retail is the modern, continuing game
Retail is Blizzard’s current version of World of Warcraft. It is the route to the latest expansion and the game Blizzard continues to update as its main contemporary product. The Classic hub describes modern WoW separately from its collection of Classic experiences; the newest expansion is available as a separate purchase, while game time or a subscription provides access to the base modern game and Classic.

For a returning player, that makes Retail the straightforward choice when the question is “What is the current WoW that most people mean today?” You do not need to identify an historical release before creating a character. You do, however, need to learn which modern expansion content you own and which campaign or level-range path the current game directs you toward.
Classic is a menu of distinct games
Blizzard’s official Classic hub lists multiple products rather than one permanent “old WoW” server. The live catalog can change, so treat the following as a dated snapshot and confirm the current lineup before creating a character:

The names and progression states are not guaranteed to remain unchanged. Blizzard’s current list is the authority for what is actually available when you return.

Compare the versions on the decisions that matter

Choose by the experience you actually miss
You want the current expansion and modern endgame
Pick Retail. This is the clearest path if your goal is to see what World of Warcraft is now rather than reconstruct what it was years ago. It also avoids the Classic-specific question of which historical iteration will remain your long-term home.
Retail is not automatically the right answer because it is newer. It is right when your motivation is current content, current progression, and an ongoing modern community. If your friends are split between versions, ask whether they mean the current expansion or a particular Classic era before you make a character.
You want a specific historical expansion
Pick the matching Classic product, not a generic “Classic” option. A player returning for Outland should investigate Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition; a player whose favorite period is Mists of Pandaria should investigate that Classic iteration. The historical name matters because a character’s progress stays with its iteration.
Blizzard’s Classic FAQ explains that a character’s story remains on that iteration. In practical terms, leveling in one Classic version is not a way to prepare the same character for every other Classic version. Decide which era you are willing to inhabit before investing dozens or hundreds of hours.

You want a clean slate and a new economy
Classic can be the better emotional reset. Blizzard’s 20th Anniversary announcement described fresh-start realms with a clean slate and fresh economy. That does not mean every Classic realm is permanently new or equally populated; it means the Anniversary launch was designed around starting over rather than importing an established economy.
Choose this route if rebuilding professions, learning an older progression curve, and watching a server economy develop are part of the fun. If you mainly want to rejoin friends who already have established modern characters, Retail may feel less disruptive.
You want a one-life challenge
Choose Classic Hardcore only if you accept its central rule: death is permanent. Blizzard’s announcement also states that Hardcore characters can transfer to non-Hardcore Normal PvE Anniversary realms, while PvE and PvP characters cannot transfer between those rulesets. That transfer relationship is a safety valve after a death or a change of heart, not a way to move a normal character into Hardcore.
Hardcore Anniversary realms also disable PvP Battlegrounds and Battlemasters, according to Blizzard’s announcement. Do not assume that a Hardcore character has the same activity list or transfer options as an ordinary PvE or PvP character. Read the current realm rules before moving anything.

You want Classic with experimentation
Season of Discovery is aimed at players who like Classic’s setting but want altered classes and additional systems. Blizzard specifically describes class-altering abilities, Rune Engraving, and new endgame activities. That makes it a poor choice if your definition of “Classic” requires every class and encounter to behave exactly as remembered, but a strong choice if discovery and experimentation are the point.
How progression and transfers affect your decision
Classic characters are not universal Classic characters
The most expensive mistake for a returning player is assuming that “Classic” is one shared progression track. It is not. The Classic FAQ says your character’s story remains on its particular iteration. A character made for one era should be treated as belonging to that era unless Blizzard explicitly announces a transfer or progression path.
Before creating a character, write down the exact destination: for example, a named Anniversary progression, Hardcore, Season of Discovery, or another listed mode. If you cannot name the destination, you are not ready to commit to a long-term Classic character.

Hardcore transfers have specific limits
Blizzard’s 20th Anniversary announcement says Hardcore characters can transfer to non-Hardcore Normal PvE Anniversary realms. It also says PvE and PvP characters cannot transfer between those rulesets. These are rules for the Anniversary environment described in that announcement; realm policies can change as progression advances.

Subscription, expansion ownership, and what you need to start
Blizzard says one active subscription or game time provides access to modern World of Warcraft and Classic. You do not need a separate subscription for each version. The latest modern expansion is treated separately, so a returning player should distinguish between:
- Game time or subscription: access to the base modern game and the Classic experiences Blizzard currently lists.
- Latest expansion purchase: access to the current expansion’s content, according to Blizzard’s current product terms.
- Regional pricing and promotions: details that can vary by region and date.
Because prices and product packaging change, use the official account and store pages for your country rather than relying on an old guide. The Classic hub is the appropriate starting point: https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/en-us/classic.
A returning-player setup plan
- Identify your reason for returning. Write one sentence: “I want the current expansion,” “I want the original rules,” “I want Outland,” “I want a one-life challenge,” or “I want experimental Classic.” That sentence usually identifies Retail or a specific Classic mode.
- Check the live mode list. Open Blizzard’s Classic hub and confirm that the mode and progression you want are currently available. Do not rely on a launch article from a previous year.
- Ask your friends for exact labels. “We play Classic” is incomplete. Get the mode, realm type, region, and realm name. Retail and Classic characters cannot simply meet because both accounts use the same subscription.
- Confirm ownership and access. Verify that your subscription or game time is active and that you own the modern expansion if Retail’s current expansion is your goal.
- Create a test character before committing. Spend enough time to check the interface, class feel, latency, and whether the progression pace matches your memory. In Classic, make sure the character is on the intended iteration before leveling seriously.
- Set your risk policy. If you choose Hardcore, decide in advance whether you will transfer a survivor to a Normal PvE Anniversary realm or retire the character after a death. Treat the one-life rule as a core commitment, not a temporary difficulty toggle.
- Record your destination. Keep the mode and realm name in a note. This prevents the common mistake of returning weeks later and forgetting which Classic iteration contains your character.
Realm and social choice: what you can and cannot infer
Your region, friends, faction preference, and desired ruleset are practical realm filters. A current population ranking or a universally “best” realm is not established here, and realm populations change. Therefore, this guide does not name a realm for everyone.

- the same region and mode as your friends;
- the ruleset you can accept for the entire character’s life;
- a realm with a healthy time-zone overlap for your play schedule;
- the faction or PvP balance that matches how you intend to play.
For Anniversary realms, Blizzard described fresh-start PvE and faction-balanced PvP realms progressing toward level 60, plus Hardcore realms progressing through Classic Era phases. Those descriptions came from the November 21, 2024 announcement and should not be treated as permanent population or progression guarantees.

Returning after a long break: the Welcome Back Gift caveat
Blizzard’s July 12, 2023 “Welcome Back” announcement described a gift for characters level 10–60 that had not logged in for 60 days. The announced package included a choice to clear quests, a specialization choice, level-appropriate gear, and teleportation to Chromie. Characters on the Shadowlands or Battle for Azeroth campaigns were excluded from the quest-clear option.
This is historical information from the 2023 announcement, not confirmation that the offer is active now. Blizzard may retire, replace, or change returning-player incentives. Controls and hardware for a comfortable return
You do not need new hardware to choose between Retail and Classic. Blizzard’s system-requirements page lists a multi-button mouse as recommended input, making it a useful optional upgrade for players who want more easily accessible abilities. It is a category recommendation, not a requirement or endorsement of a particular device. Review the current requirements at Blizzard’s official World of Warcraft page before troubleshooting performance.
For either version, begin with the controls you already understand. Add keybinds only when a specific class or mode demands them. In Hardcore, reliable movement and defensive binds matter more than cosmetic interface changes; in Retail, the current class and encounter design may reward a different layout than the one you used years ago.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“Classic” is treated as one server family
Problem: You create a character without checking the exact mode, then discover your friends are elsewhere.
Fix: Confirm the full mode name, realm type, and region before character creation.
A historical character is expected to move between iterations
Problem: You assume time spent in one Classic version carries into another.

Fix: Treat each iteration as its own home. Blizzard’s FAQ says the character’s story remains on that iteration.
Hardcore is approached like an ordinary difficulty setting
Problem: A routine mistake ends the run permanently.
Fix: Choose Hardcore only when the one-life rule is desirable, learn its current transfer limits, and use conservative play rather than ordinary-mode habits.
An old offer or realm rule is assumed to be current
Problem: You plan around the 2023 Welcome Back Gift or 2024 Anniversary transfer description without checking current terms.
Fix: Date every announcement you rely on and verify the live Blizzard page immediately before acting.
A realm is chosen from a generic recommendation
Problem: The realm has the wrong region, ruleset, faction balance, or time-zone community for you.
Fix: Start with your friends and your own schedule, then check current realm information. There is no evidence-based single best realm for every returning player.

- Do you primarily want the current expansion? Choose Retail.
- Do you primarily want a particular historical expansion? Choose the matching Classic iteration, if it is currently listed.
- Do you want permanent-death stakes? Choose Classic Hardcore and read the current realm and transfer rules first.
- Do you want older rules with new class discoveries? Investigate Season of Discovery.
- Are friends already committed to one mode? Join their exact mode and realm unless its rules conflict with your reason for returning.
- Are you undecided between several Classic eras? Start with a short test in the era that best matches your strongest memory, but do not assume the character will transfer later.
Bottom line for returning players
Retail is the default recommendation for a player who wants the modern, current World of Warcraft and does not have a specific historical target. Classic is the better recommendation when the appeal is an era, a fresh economy, a modified ruleset, or a one-life challenge. Because Classic contains several separate experiences and because progression does not automatically carry between them, the decisive step is choosing the exact mode before you invest in a character.
Blizzard’s official sources are the final authority for the live catalog, expansion ownership, realm rules, transfer eligibility, and any returning-player promotion. Start at the Classic hub, identify the version your friends actually use, and make your choice based on the experience you want to repeat—or the new challenge you want to accept.
