What changes when you use Race Change?
Race Change is a paid service applied to a character you already have. During the process, you select a new race and appearance, with a name change available as an option. Blizzard describes those choices in its Race Change announcement.

This is the more direct route when the character itself is important to you and you want to continue with it after changing race. The available new races depend on the character’s class, so do not assume every race is an option for every character. Check the service interface for the specific character and target race before paying; Blizzard’s Race Change service page describes the service but does not provide a complete current class-and-race eligibility chart.

What do you get by starting a new character?
A new character is a separate character with its own progression and beginning. That makes it the natural choice if you want an additional character rather than changing the identity of one you already play, or if trying a race’s starting path is part of the point.
Starting locations depend on player circumstances and game updates. Blizzard says Exile’s Reach is the default for eligible players who have never created or leveled a character; veterans and returning players can opt out and begin in their race’s starting area. Some race and class combinations also have distinct starting levels or experiences. Check the current character-creation options rather than assuming every new character begins at the same place or level. See Blizzard’s Exile’s Reach overview.

Race Change or new character: how to decide
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping one existing character | Race Change | It changes the race and appearance of a selected character instead of starting another character’s progression. |
| Having a separate character | New character | A new character has its own progression and beginning. |
| Experiencing a race’s starting path | Usually a new character | A Race Change is a service for an existing character; creating a character lets you begin through the available starting experience. |
| Changing to a specific race | Check eligibility first | Race Change options depend on class, and some races may need to be unlocked. |
| Avoiding the service purchase | New character | Creating another character avoids buying Race Change, though it means beginning a separate progression path. |
Check race eligibility and unlocks before choosing
Confirm the race works with the class
Open the Race Change service for the character you have in mind and verify that the target race is offered. The available combinations can change, and a complete current chart is not established here; the in-game interface is the practical check before purchase.
Check whether the race is unlocked
Some races may require an unlock before they become available. For example, Blizzard’s The War Within notes say Earthen characters can be unlocked after completing their quests and the overall level-up campaign. That specific requirement should not be read as a complete or current list of unlock conditions for every race.

Is Race Change worth the cost?
Race Change is a paid digital service, and the price can vary by region and over time. Blizzard’s service page is the place to check the current price for your region and WoW version before buying. A Blizzard promotion announced on August 22, 2024 listed U.S. prices of $25 for one Race Change and $50 for three; those were promotional prices at that time, not current price guidance. See the 2024 promotion announcement.
Weigh the current price against what you gain: keeping one character is the main reason to pay for Race Change. If you are happy to build up a separate character and would enjoy its starting experience, creating one avoids the service purchase.
