This is important because Windows does not normally repair a printer driver by replacing one DLL. A printer driver is installed as a package, with files and configuration registered together. Microsoft documents printer-driver packages as being stored in locations such as %windir%inf and C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository.
Some indexed copies of the file come from Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista-era driver packages. A Vista-era copy has been reported inside a prnwi001.inf folder under DriverStoreFileRepository. That does not make the reported path, size, architecture, or version a universal replacement specification.
Why does Windows request this file?
Windows may request wp9res.dll when it tries to install, load, or use an old Wipro printer driver. Common triggers include:
- Reinstalling an old printer
- Restoring a printer after a Windows repair
- Moving a printer installation from an older Windows computer
- Removing files with a cleanup utility
- Antivirus quarantine
- A damaged Windows driver store
- Disk or system-file corruption
- Attempting to use an old driver on a newer Windows architecture

These messages are reported by file indexes rather than being a single canonical Microsoft error. If the message appears while adding or printing to a Wipro device, the printer-driver explanation is strong. If it appears when launching an unrelated application, inspect the complete path shown in the error before assuming that the Windows printer copy is involved.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates
Windows Update may restore or make available a compatible printer package. It is the safest first step because it repairs through Windows servicing rather than copying an isolated DLL.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try to add the printer or print a test page again.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the first source for current printer drivers. You can also review Microsoft’s printer-driver installation guidance.
If Windows Update does not offer the Wipro driver
The public evidence does not establish that Windows 10 or Windows 11 still distributes this old Wipro package through Windows Update. If the printer is not detected or no compatible driver is offered, continue with the Windows repair steps below, then reinstall the printer package through Settings.
Do not select a driver merely because its filename resembles wp9res.dll. The correct package depends on the exact printer model and the Windows architecture.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
If the file belongs to a Windows driver package and the driver store or related Windows components are damaged, run Deployment Image Servicing and Management, followed by System File Checker. Microsoft specifically recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Try the printer again.
Microsoft provides the full procedure in its System File Checker instructions.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find general system-file corruption. Continue with the printer reinstall.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the printer.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the result remains unchanged, continue with printer removal and consider System Restore.
- DISM reports that source files could not be found: Complete Windows Update first, restart, and run the commands again. Persistent servicing errors may require Windows recovery rather than a manually copied DLL.

Fix 3: Remove and reinstall the printer
Time needed: 10 to 25 minutes
This is the most important repair when the error appears during printer setup or printing. Removing the device and adding it again gives Windows an opportunity to obtain and install the complete driver package.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Wipro printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Follow the prompts.
- Print a test page.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Wipro printer.
- Select Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner.
- Follow the prompts.
- Print a test page.

If Windows asks for a driver, select Windows Update when that choice is available. If you have the original signed driver package for the exact Wipro model, use that package rather than extracting one DLL from it.
If Windows cannot find a compatible package, the printer may be too old for the current operating system. Do not force an XP or Vista file into a modern driver directory.

Fix 4: Check the driver through Device Manager
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Device Manager is useful for identifying a failed printer device or a driver with an error status. It may not expose every file inside a printer package, so use it for diagnosis rather than manually replacing wp9res.dll.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers.
- Also check Print queues if that category is present.
- Look for the Wipro printer or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
If Windows identifies a driver problem:
- Right-click the printer entry.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Allow Windows to search.
- Restart if prompted.
- Test printing.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Confirm the rollback.
- Restart Windows.
If you remove the device from Device Manager, do so only when you are prepared to reinstall it. Removing a device entry does not guarantee that every old package file has been removed, and it does not justify deleting folders manually from DriverStoreFileRepository.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
If the error appeared after antivirus activity, Windows Security may have quarantined a printer-driver file. A quarantine event does not prove that the file was malicious, and it does not prove that the detection was a false positive.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any item that identifies the original path or filename.
- Check whether it was associated with the Wipro printer package.
Restore a quarantined file only if all of the following are true:
- The original path was an expected Windows driver location.
- The file belonged to the complete signed printer package.
- The detection has been reviewed and is not a current malware threat.
- You can reinstall the package cleanly if restoration causes another problem.
Microsoft warns that allowing unsafe files can expose the device. The safer approach is usually to remove the printer and reinstall a trusted, complete package rather than restoring a lone DLL.
If the file was found in an unrelated application directory, do not restore it merely because its name matches. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan and investigate that application separately.

Fix 6: Use System Restore if the timing is clear
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error started immediately after a printer installation, driver update, Windows change, or cleanup operation and a restore point exists from before that event.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the printer.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can affect installed programs, drivers, and system settings. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
Do not use Windows Features for this file
wp9res.dll is not a feature that should be restored by enabling .NET Framework, legacy DirectPlay, Media Features, or another optional Windows component. Those features address different Windows functionality.
Open Settings > Apps > Optional features only when a separate error specifically identifies an optional Windows feature. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable packages, DirectX, or .NET is not a justified repair for a file identified as the Wipro nine-pin printer driver.
Do not run regsvr32 on wp9res.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM and OLE DLLs that expose the DllRegisterServer entry point. A printer-driver resource file installed as part of a driver package is not normally repaired that way.

Commands such as these are therefore not a routine fix:
regsvr32 wp9res.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32wp9res.dll
They may produce an error about a missing entry point or fail to address the actual driver-store problem. Microsoft explains the proper scope of the tool in its regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
Avoid copying a DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
A loose DLL download can be:
- The wrong Windows release
- The wrong processor architecture
- Modified or malicious
- Missing related driver files
- Incompatible with the printer package
- Unable to repair the INF registration or driver-store metadata
System32 does not always mean 32-bit. On 64-bit Windows, it commonly contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Copying a 32-bit or Vista-era file into either directory can create a second problem without repairing the printer.

If you find wp9res.dll on the computer, inspect its context rather than judging it by its filename alone.
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Confirm that the description refers to the Wipro nine-pin printer driver.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
- Confirm that the location is an expected Windows driver location or the original printer-package directory.
An expected location can include a Windows driver cache, System32, or a DriverStoreFileRepository subfolder. The exact path varies by Windows release, architecture, and package installation.
If the file is inside a game, productivity application, temporary download folder, or unrelated vendor directory, do not assume it is the Windows printer copy. Follow the application’s own repair or reinstall process, and scan the file if its signature and origin are unclear.
What if the printer is obsolete?
Some Wipro nine-pin printers were designed for Windows versions much older than Windows 10 or Windows 11. Current Windows may not provide a compatible package, and a legacy driver may not work correctly even when its DLL is present.

- Use a compatible generic printer driver if the device supports it.
- Connect the printer to an older supported Windows computer.
- Keep the printer on a system that already has its working driver.
- Replace the printer with hardware supported by the current Windows release.
Do not substitute a similarly named DLL from another Windows version. A matching filename is not proof of matching architecture, dependencies, or printer support.
