The safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the program’s supported packet-capture dependency, normally Npcap from its official download page.
The 60-second answer
- Close the application showing the error.
- Remove old WinPcap if it is installed.
- Download the current official Npcap installer from npcap.com.
- Run it as an administrator.
- For older software, enable Install Npcap in WinPcap API-compatible Mode.
- Restart Windows and try the application again.
Do not download wpcap.dll from a random DLL website or copy it from another computer. The library must match related files such as Packet.dll, the application’s architecture, and the installed capture driver.
What wpcap.dll does
wpcap.dll is the Windows implementation of the libpcap packet-capture API. Programs use it to:
- Enumerate network adapters
- Capture packets
- Send or inject packets
- Apply capture filters
- Read capture files
- Work with the companion
Packet.dlllibrary
The DLL works with a packet-capture driver. It is therefore only one part of the capture chain. A successful DLL repair does not automatically resolve every driver, service, adapter, permission, or network-filter problem.

wpcap.dll is not a Windows component. Windows Update does not normally provide it, and it is not restored by treating it like a protected Windows system file. It is supplied by the application or by a packet-capture package such as WinPcap or Npcap.
Applications that may request it include Wireshark, Nmap, GNS3, Qosium, network monitors, security tools, network emulators, older engineering software, and custom applications built against the WinPcap-compatible API.
WinPcap versus Npcap
WinPcap was the original Windows packet-capture package. Its final official release was 4.1.3, and it is unsupported. Npcap is the maintained successor from the Nmap Project and also provides the wpcap.dll API for WinPcap-compatible applications.
Npcap normally installs its DLLs in a separate Npcap directory. Some older applications look only in the traditional Windows DLL locations used by WinPcap. For those programs, Npcap’s WinPcap API-compatible Mode is important because it places compatibility DLLs where legacy software expects them and handles the replacement of conflicting WinPcap components.

The most common causes are:
- Npcap or WinPcap was never installed
- An application update removed or replaced the capture dependency
- Npcap installation was incomplete
- Old WinPcap and Npcap components coexist
- The application expects the legacy DLL location
- Antivirus software quarantined the library
- A Windows feature update disrupted the capture driver
- The installed files do not match the application’s architecture
- A DLL exists, but a dependent file or driver cannot load
The wording helps identify the stage of the failure:
- Missing or not found: Windows or the application cannot locate the DLL.
- Unable to load Npcap or WinPcap: the application could not load the packet-capture library or its dependencies.
- The DLL exists but will not load: the path, architecture, dependent DLLs, or package installation may be wrong.
- Capture fails after the DLL issue is fixed: investigate the Npcap service, permissions, adapter, or network filter.
Fix 1: Identify and repair the application first
Before changing Windows files, note which application displays the error. The correct repair may be built into that program.
Repair the application
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is not available or does not work, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer. For a network tool, emulator, monitor, or security application, reinstalling the application may also reinstall its supported packet-capture dependency.
Wireshark’s Windows installer includes Npcap as part of its installation process. If Wireshark reports that it cannot capture after installation, rerun its official installer and check that the Npcap component is selected.

If the application vendor documents a specific Npcap version or compatibility setting, follow that guidance rather than assuming every old program supports every newer package.
Fix 2: Install Npcap from its official source
This is the most likely repair when no supported capture package is installed.
- Close the affected program.
- Open a browser and go to npcap.com.
- Use the official download or release page.
- Download the Npcap installer intended for Windows.
- Open your Downloads folder.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the license terms.
- Keep the normal installation options unless the affected application requires a specific setting.
- If the program is older or expects WinPcap directly in
System32orSysWOW64, select Install Npcap in WinPcap API-compatible Mode. - Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the affected program.
The application should now start without the missing-DLL message. If it starts but cannot capture traffic, continue to the service checks below.
Do not install both an old WinPcap package and Npcap casually. Their DLL search paths can conflict, allowing an application to load an older library first.
Fix 3: Remove old WinPcap before reinstalling Npcap
A partial WinPcap replacement can leave the wrong DLL or driver available to the application.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for WinPcap.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Npcap from its official source.
- Enable WinPcap API-compatible Mode if the application is legacy software.
- Restart Windows again if requested.
On older Windows layouts, open Control Panel, choose Programs, then Programs and Features, select WinPcap, and choose Uninstall.
If WinPcap is not listed, do not manually delete random DLLs from Windows directories. Reinstall Npcap and use its compatibility mode to establish a consistent capture installation.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it must load the correct 32-bit library. Do not replace an x86 DLL with an x64 DLL, or the reverse.

Npcap supports native Windows architectures and supplies x86 DLLs for 32-bit applications running on 64-bit Windows. Install the official package rather than trying to select DLLs manually.
To check an application’s architecture:
- Start the affected program if possible.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also check the application’s documentation or installation directory. If the DLL is present but the error remains, the program may be searching a different directory, loading the wrong architecture, or failing on a dependent file. Repair the application and reinstall Npcap rather than copying individual files.
Fix 5: Check the Npcap driver service
Once the DLL loads, packet capture still depends on Npcap’s driver service.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
sc query npcap
Look for the Npcap service state in the output. To attempt to start it, run:
net start npcap
If the service starts successfully, reopen the capture application and test an adapter.
If Windows says the service does not exist, reinstall Npcap. If the service exists but will not start, reboot first, then reinstall Npcap as an administrator. A Windows feature update or an interrupted installation can remove or damage the driver installation.
Npcap also installs a watchdog task intended to help repair a missing driver installation at startup. Reinstalling Npcap and rebooting is still the appropriate repair when the service is absent or damaged.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a legitimate packet-capture component because capture drivers interact closely with network traffic.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent quarantined items.
- Restore an item only if it came from the official application or Npcap installer and you recognize the installation.
- Reinstall or repair the application after restoring it.
Other antivirus products use different menus and safe-list procedures. Do not restore an unknown DLL merely because its name is wpcap.dll. If the file did not come from the official application or Npcap package, remove it and perform a security scan.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall the capture driver
If the DLL is present but capture still fails, the driver may be outdated, incomplete, or incompatible with the current Windows installation.
- Close the capture application.
- Uninstall Npcap from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download Npcap again from its official source.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
sc query npcapagain. - Open the application and test capture.
Npcap’s filter-driver installation can briefly interrupt network connectivity. Save work that depends on the network before reinstalling.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when other Windows files fail
SFC and DISM are not first-line repairs for wpcap.dll because Npcap is a third-party package. Use them when other Windows components are also failing or Windows itself appears corrupted.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall Npcap afterward if
wpcap.dllis still missing.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command normally restores a missing Npcap DLL.

Do not use regsvr32 or copy the DLL manually
Do not run:
regsvr32 wpcap.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. wpcap.dll is a packet-capture API library, not a typical registration-based component.

Npcap also provides a diagnostic batch file named DiagReport.bat. Run it according to the Npcap documentation and preserve the resulting report for the application vendor or technical support.
Frequently asked questions
Is wpcap.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a packet-capture library supplied by an application or by WinPcap/Npcap. Windows Update does not normally provide it.
Should I download wpcap.dll by itself?
No. Use the affected application’s official installer or the official Npcap package. A standalone DLL may be unsafe, the wrong architecture, or missing required companion files and drivers.
Is WinPcap still current?
No. WinPcap 4.1.3 is the last official WinPcap release and is unsupported. Npcap is the maintained successor, although some old applications need its compatibility mode.
Why does the DLL exist but the program still fail?
The application may be searching the wrong directory, loading the wrong architecture, finding an old WinPcap copy first, or failing on a dependent DLL. Reinstall Npcap and enable compatibility mode when required.
Wireshark starts, but capture does not work. Is wpcap.dll still missing?
Not necessarily. The remaining problem may involve the npcap service, permissions, the selected adapter, or the network filter driver. Run sc query npcap, then reinstall Npcap if the service is missing or damaged.
